Photo-illustrated throughout many colour plates text & captions printed in blue & red black white photo illustrations colour borders. Colour-illustrated softcovers red plastic comb binding as issued minor soiling front cover minor shelfwear still VG- copy. First edition of this souvenir yearbook detailing the largest field trials held in the United States following World War II testing Army and Air Force personnel under conditions of simulated nuclear war even including the faked dropping of an atomic bomb. A number of experimental groups were introduced including a Sky Cavalry which combined the 82nd Airborne with a helicopter unit although there was controversy following the exercises with Armor wanting helicopters attached to mechanized cavalry units and Intelligence wanting aircraft with radar and infrared sensors. Unfortunately the massive maneuvers covering 45 days resulted in massive traffic jams with mechanized units trying to attack during torrential downpours and other logistics issues emerged which the US military attempted to correct when they later applied many of the results to new tactics during the Vietnam War. [World War I Literature] Fussell, Paul
The Great War and Modern Memory: The Illustrated Edition.
New York:: Sterling 2000. Second Printing of the First Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine unclipped dust jacket . This is one of seminal books examining the shattering effects of the First World War on the English soldiers that took part in the slaughter fields of France. Fussell traces the changes in attitudes and the shattered idealism that marked the Lost Generation forever following the armistice. The effects of the carnage inflicted by the war changed the attitudes of the writers involved and created a new more "modern" artistic temperment and forced new images of violence into their language and art which infused the collective consciousness of their generation and those that followed. This edition is especially illustrated with pertinent photographs and images of the whole war experience. Sterling, unknown

First edition of this exceedingly scarce history of the Southwest Washington doughboys in World War I with emphasis on Company M from the 161st Infantry. Of particular interest is the dramatic account of the fierce episode which amounted to a war of extermination of the IWW--the Centralia case. By slaying some members of Centralia Washington Legionnaires on parade on Armistice Day 1919 the Wobbly loggers managed to ignite a firestorm which destroyed the IWW as a Union. The community backlash resulted in the lynching of Wesley Everest a Wobbly organizer as well as a drive by the American Legion to raise funds by for the killed soldiers and for the Legion by publishing this Unit History and furthermore hiring Lampman -- a Portland Oregonian reporter -- to write the famed anti-IWW polemic Centralia tragedy and trial. In addition this World War I local Unit history includes an extensive section on the American Red Cross and the nurses from Centralia & Chehalis who served in France with the American Expeditionary Force. [CIVIL WAR -- PHOTOGRAPH]. ANDERSON, D[avid] H (Photographer).
Mammoth plate albumen photograph of General Phil Sheridan portraying himself dressed in uniform mounted on a horse charging in an artful yet artificial backdrop.
New York: D.H. Anderson 1893. One large original albumen photograph sized 17.5 x 21 in. mounted on 21 x 25 in. board minor chipping & damage to fore-edges of board some very minor staining still a VG image. First edition of this very scarce and early attempt at art photography of the patriotic sort and often referred to as reenactment photography. While the image of Sheridan is indeed from a photographic negative the backdrop of galloping horse and battlefield have all been supplied via lithography. This was an unusual and labor-intensive special effects process of which Anderson developed most of his skills during the Civil War in the Richmond VA area. Anderson 1827-1905 began his career as a daguerreotype photographer in Paducah KY in 1855 and moved throughout the South and Midwest before landing in Richmond during the Civil War. In 1879 he sold his business there to George Cook and purchased and refitted Mathew Brady’s historic studio at 785 Broadway in New York adorning the walls with life-sized crayon drawings and pastels a la Sarony and was one of the first adopters of Charles Bennet’s gelatin dry plate process requiring very little exposure time for excellent photographic images. He would often engage the original participants to reenact their historical actions and events which may have inspired the very popular Wild West shows at the time reenacting recent events in the Indian Wars using the actual participants in their performances. He specialized in mammoth and gargantuan photographic prints. No copies located in Worldcat: See: David H. Shields David H. Anderson Time Period 1855-1905 Broadway Photographs 2013. D.H. [World War I] Fussell, Paul
The Great War and Modern Memory.
New York:: Oxford University Press 1975. First Printing of the First Edition. A Near Fine copy with a discreet owner name on the flyleaf in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket with light edge wear. [WORLD WAR I]. SCHREINER, George Abel
The craft sinister. A diplomatico-political history of the Great War and its causes -- Diplomacy and international politics and diplomatists as seen at close range by an American newspaperman who served in Central Europe as war and political correspondent. . . .
New York: G. Albert Geyer 1920. Tall 8vo. xxvi 2 422 pp. Blue cloth gilt lettering w/ d.j. fantastic cover art of diplomat clutching a globe on blue background slight shelfwear rubbing NF/NF copy. First edition of this rare and hard-hitting expose of the diplomatic blunders and mistakes that led to World War I drew out its trauma and casualties and in the aftermath caused the catastrophic failure of the German State. He lays this at the feet of the myopic and nationalist views pushed by the French & English victors and the amateur diplomacy of those appointed by Wilson to negotiate the peace after World War I who demanded the complete removal of the monarchy. Sadly he was very prescient in forseeing the elements which contributed to the rise of the Nazi Party and World War II but to the failures of American State building in Iraq and the Middle East after 9/11. Schreiner 1875-1942 was a noted war correspondent during World War I for the Associated Press who reported from many of the battlefields behind enemy lines. G. Albert Geyer, hardcover

WORLD WAR II; JAPAN
Photograph album: "Thoughts on Military Life" title in Japanese.
Japan: 1940. Superb personal photo album portraying the training of a Japanese infantry officer cadet at the junior division of the Rikugun Yonen Gakko - Imperial Japanese Army Academy - at Asaka in Saitama province at the outset of World War II. Images show his family and friends; his well-appointed room with stacked arms; group portraits of cadets; the buildings on campus and locally interiors of a mess hall lecture theatre and of a barrack-room; parades and drill on the drill square; training exercises with firehoses and with howitzers and attack training under live fire with smoke drifting across the parade ground; jukenjitsu or kendo-style bayonet training; sumo wrestling and a traditional dance performance. A highly evocative visual document which is further enhanced by the fact that is has the marks of having been captured and passed as legitimate "loot" with the ink-stamp "Examined in the field. passed by Joint Intelligence". It was taken by U.S. Marine Sergeant Michael Kolesar of Ironwood Michigan serving with A Co. 6th Tank Battalion 6th Marine Division and has his ownership inscription to the front free endpaper datelined Okinawa April 1945. The 6th Marine Division was the only U.S. Marine Division formed and disbanded overseas never setting foot as a Division in the United States. It was formed on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands in September 1944 composed of the 4th 22nd and 29th Marines and assorted Engineering Medical Tank Headquarters and service battalions. They landed on Okinawa 1 April 1945 as part of III Amphibious Corps swept through the northern Ishikawa Isthmus and then engaged in heavy fighting against the Shuri Line located in hills honeycombed with caves and passages across the southern Coastline fighting for over a week and then advanced through Naha. Kolesar's tank battalion was involved in the campaign through Naha and then the Oroku peninsula sustaining heavy losses. For its part in an operation which came to be known as the "Typhoon of Steel" for the sheer intensity of the fighting the 6th received a Presidential Unit Citation for "extraordinary heroism in action". The Division was prepared for the invasion of Japan which never took place so they were sent to Tsingtao China in October 1945 disbanding in April 1946. Kolesar was evidently back home before the unit reached China the Ironwood Daily Globe of 24 October 1945 recording his presentation of a Japanese rifle that he had brought back as a trophy to the local Conservation Club he evidently retained possession of this attractive and fascinating album. Landscape quarto 215 x 282 mm. Title page with "calligraphic inscription" extolling the five codes of the Imperial Precepts to Soldiers and Sailors - Loyalty Propriety Valour Fai8thfulness and Righteousness and Valour - 75 original photographs of various formats - ranging from 100 x 70 mm to 115 x 155 mm - neatly mounted on 48 black card leaves tissue-guards remaining intact and to verso of the free endpapers some with carefully written captions in Japanese on shaped paper labels beneath. Original silk cord-backed album of black half morocco-grain cloth bottle green velvet boards the front deeply stamped with title in gilt together with Japanese Army Cadet insignia of a star within wreath and motif of a steel helmet in red with gilt katana in a flurry of cherry blossom petals.
