‎Office of War Information Poster No.66: "Ten Years Ago: The Nazis Burned These Books. But Free Americans Can Still Read Them"‎

‎Washington D. C.: U.S. Government Printing Office 1943. Poster. very good. Paper poster measuring 20"x 28". Original World War 2 American propaganda poster. Original fold marks are visible as well as a 1" tear down the top middle fold and a very small tear to the bottom edge. The paper has browned on the back of the poster and in general is quite fragile. This poster is in very good condition considering the age and fragility of the paper. This is a fantastic example of World War 2 American propaganda featuring a black and white photograph of Nazis and a large crowd of people all doing the Nazi salute in front of a large pile of burnt books. At the top of the poster in white and red text: "Ten years ago: the NAZIS BURNED THESE BOOKS" and at the bottom in white text blocked in red: ".but free Americans CAN STILL READ THEM". This poster is very rare especially in such good condition.

The same poster can be found as a part of many Academic institutions collections including but not limited to: Northwestern University's WW2 poster collection Hoover Institute's poster collection University of Illinois teaching with digital content Cultural Heritage Community University of Northern Texas's World War poster collection and The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History's WW2 poster collection. 1943 U.S. Government Printing Office unknown‎

‎[Civil War Draft]‎

‎Telegram and envelope reporting Substitute Found for Required Military Service during Civil War‎

‎Very Good. Single sheet 22 x 14 cm. Telegram Horizontal and Vertical fold. Printed form on one side in red type "The American Telegraph Company Principal Office 83 State Street. Form filled in with black ink. Sent from Portland Maine. Rec'd Boston Sept 3 1864. To Geo Rounds in Boston. Handwritten "I have got a man Jonathan Norton." Undated later handwritten note in pencil in lower right portion of telegram sheet: "This "man a negro was Grandfather's substitute in the Civil War and was killed. Mother." Small original envelope which contained this telegram is present addressed to Geo Rounds at a Franklin Street address. When it became clear that the Union Army's need for new recruits could not be met by volunteers alone Congress passed the Enrollment Act in March 1863 which authorized a national draft of men aged 20 to 45. Men of means could avoid service by hiring a substitute to serve in their stead or by paying the Federal Government a $300 Commutation Fee. unknown‎

‎[Japanese American Internment]: [War Relocation Authority]: [Idaho]: Rawlings, WE W E‎

‎Memoranda Containing Instructions for Final Reports on the Minidoka Internment Camp Following Its Closure‎

‎Hunt ID: November 1 1945. 4pp. mimeographed text on tall folio sheets stapled at top left. Old folds light wear two holes punched in top margin. Very good. An informative document written by W.E. Rawlings the Project Director at the Minidoka Internment Camp in Idaho providing guidelines instructions pointers and so forth to staff members preparing final statistical functional and personal narrative reports. The camp closed a few days before this memo was written and final reports were prepared to provide "outside groups both public and private" about "the unique work of the WRA." Rawlings' advice here includes suggestions to refer back to monthly reports consult the "evacuee newspaper 'The Minidoka Irrigator'" confer with longtime employees at the camp and much more. He also suggests methods for addressing questions such as "If You Aren't Sure Washington Will Understand About Mistakes" "If You Are Unsure How Far to Go on Opinion in Personal Narratives" "If You Wonder How 'Personal' Your Personal Narrative Should Be" and so forth. Rawlings advises staff that reports need not be illustrated with photographs or they should be kept to a minimum given that the Denver Photo Unit was overworked at the present moment. In the end Rawlings stipulates that reports should be "clear reasonably complete and factually correct." A fairly sterile document considering the nature of the experiences on which the staff was reporting. November 1 unknown‎

‎[Texas]. [World War II]‎

‎Manuscript Friendship Album of a German Prisoner of War in Texas During World War II‎

‎
Huntsville Tx 1945. Very good. 84pp. Primarily in German. Quarto. Brown cloth album with leather corners and snap closure. Manuscript initials on front cover. Corners lightly worn. Contents evenly toned. A rare friendship album kept by Franz Kozian a German prisoner of war at the POW camp in Huntsville Texas. The album contains over seventy-five entries from fellow incarcerated soldiers all of them lengthier than just an autograph. Many of them include lengthy expressions of friendship or quotations from famous German-language authors such as one that copies out the text of Rilke's poem "Herbst" "Autumn" with the illustration of a tree with falling red leaves. Most of the entries also include details of the internees' home towns and other camps they've been in. At the end of the album is a detailed list of fellow prisoners with their home addresses. By the end of World War II there were over 425000 enemy prisoners on U.S. soil and Texas had twice as many POW camps as any other state due to space and climate. The Geneva Convention specifies that prisoners must be kept in a climate similar to that of where they were captured and Texas was considered similar to northern Africa resulting in a serious influx. The present item seems to be a relatively unusual survival from the POW camps and is quite detailed in its contents. A valuable research tool for this unusual chapter of American military history.
‎

‎Jones, Isabel [or, less likely, Grace], apparently a Nurse in the Union Army during the Civil War‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed. dated September 28 1862‎

‎1862. Poor. 20 cm x 25 cm single sheet folded to make 4 handwritten pages. Large patriotic color Illustration of a bald eagle with 2 U.S. flags occupies top third of first page of stationery. Two horizontal fold mark. Split halfway across on a fold on the last two pages. Pinkish color to much of the letter suggesting old damping. Ink quite faded and generally difficult to read. Many words are so indistinct that it was impossible for us to read them and some other words or phrases are just gone. Her letter is addressed to an otherwise unidentified cousin. Jones does not seem to show on standard lists of Civil War Nurses but the information in this letter suggests that she should. Here is our effort to transcribe this difficult-to-decipher letter: "Your letter of the 21st came to hand in due time but I had about made my mind that you was not going to write to me. I was glad to hear from you and hope that you will not fail to write again. I am well. Hoping you enjoy the same good blessing. We are situated on the same ground we occupied a part of last Fall and Winter. We have been here about four weeks. After spending the summer on the peninsula we are very glad to obtain old ground which seems almost like home. You want to know why I am in the hospital. It is not because I am sick but because others are sick and need care. I am what is termed nurse. My wages are $26.50 per month. The business is by no means delightful but I get along very well. We have got one fellow who is very sick I fear he will not recover. On the Peninsula my health became very poor but now I am well. I wish that I could hear that Grandmother is on the gain but fear I never shall. Tell hear I think of her nearly all of the time and and want to see but if I fail to see her I expect to see her in Heaven. I have wrote to your father. I presume he has received my last letter before now. I do not know that I can tell you anything about the war that would amount to anything more than you already know. As we are at present we are retired from the active field I am not as well posted as when we were aamid the turmoils of battle. I have not heard a battle sound since we came across the river. Apparently all seems quiet which seems good. top two lines at top of 4th page too indistinct to decipher My hospital service is every other day. Every other day and night. I have to work taking care of the sick of our regiment then I am idle twenty-four hours. . several lines gone or indistinct here and the I will have a chance to eat army rations wear army cloths and a few moremostly indistinct lines ." She ends the letter by requesting that her cousin write to her at Hospital 50th NY Engineer Regiment Washington D.C. Online information reports that the regiment composed mostly of men from New York and a small number from Pennsylvania lost by death 10 killed in action 7 from wounds received and 214 from disease and other causes. unknown‎

‎General Orders No. 187‎

‎Washington: Adjutant General's Office 1863. Very Good. Small broadsheet. 13 x 19 cm. Dated June 24 1863. Court Martial of First Lieutenant Thomas C. Baldwin 7th Iowa Volunteers for two counts of drunkenness and a third count of "taking "a negro wench into his tent took her in bed with him and lay with her until nearly midnight with his tent doors open." Baldwin plead guilty to all three counts and was sentenced to be dismissed from the service. The proceedings were then forwarded to President Lincoln for review. The record was found defective in not showing that the court was properly organized but since Baldwin admitted his guilt of "a most gross and debasing offence" the President directed that Baldwin be dismissed from the service. Austin writes that he wants to attend the Free School for applicants seeking commands in colored troops. ‎Black Troops Desegregation in Korean War‎

‎Civil Rights and U.S. Military Integration African American Soldiers Serving in Korea Shortly After Truman's 1948 Desegregation Order‎

‎1949. African American U.S. Army soldiers photographed in Korea during the early 1950s document Black military service during the first major war fought after the desegregation of the United States armed forces. Twenty photographs dating to the Korean War era depict African American soldiers operating in field environments during active deployment. One photograph includes a detailed inscription written by a soldier identified as PFC Glenn Miller describing harsh winter conditions during a convoy movement in December 1951. The images record daily wartime experience during a transitional period in American military history when Black soldiers were serving in increasing numbers within newly integrated units following President Harry S. Truman's 1948 order mandating racial equality in the armed forces.

Twenty black and white photographs depicting African American soldiers in U.S. Army uniforms during Korean War service. Photographs measure approximately 2 x 2 inches to 3 x 5 inches and show soldiers operating outdoors in Korean terrain including roads forested areas and mountainous landscapes. Several images show troops wearing helmets and carrying rifles while others depict soldiers traveling with jeeps or trucks in convoy movements along rural roads. Numerous group photographs show African American soldiers posed together in field conditions. One photograph bears a lengthy inscription on the verso written by PFC Glenn Miller and dated December 1951 describing a winter convoy: "It was plenty cold that night and a lot of snow we had to sleep outside after riding 25 miles on uncovered trucks for 3 hrs. boots were so cold I could hardly get them on.".

The Korean War fought between 1950 and 1953 became the first large scale test of the U.S. military following the formal desegregation of the armed forces ordered in 1948. African American soldiers had served in segregated units during World War II and their wartime contributions strengthened political pressure from civil rights advocates to end racial separation in the military. By the time U.S. forces entered the Korean conflict integration policies were being implemented across many units though resistance from some senior commanders and uneven enforcement slowed the process in the early years of the war. Approximately 600000 African Americans served in the armed forces during the Korean War and Black servicemen accounted for roughly 9 percent of American fatalities in the conflict. The photographs provide firsthand visual documentation of Black soldiers serving in combat zones while enduring the severe winter conditions and rugged terrain that characterized the Korean battlefield. Twenty photographs ranging from approximately 2 x 2 inches to 3 x 5 inches. A small number of images show minor discoloration from age; most remain well preserved with clear contrast. Overall condition very good. unknown‎

‎Korean War Black Troops‎

‎Civil Rights and U.S. Military Integration Korean War Photo Album of about 120 photographs of Integrated Army Soldiers at Fort Riley Japan and Korea 1953-1955‎

‎1953. Benford Johnnie. Korean War photo album documenting early integrated U.S. Army service during the final phase of the Korean War assembled between 1953 and 1955. The photographs record the experience of a Black soldier from Chicago serving in one of the first generations of racially integrated American military units following the federal desegregation of the armed forces ordered by President Harry S. Truman in 1948. The album follows Benford and fellow soldiers from training in the United States to overseas service in Japan and Korea. Numerous captions identify individual soldiers and locations providing unusually detailed documentation of daily life among racially diverse troops serving together during a transitional period in American military and civil rights history.

Photographic album compiled by Johnnie Benford containing aprox 120 photographs taken between approximately 1953 and 1955 during Korean War service. Images begin at Fort Riley Kansas where soldiers in the newly integrated Army appear in training exercises with artillery mortars rifles ammunition belts and gas masks. Later photographs show the unit in Yokohama Japan during a period of rest and staging prior to deployment to Korea. The final portion of the album documents service on the northeastern Korean front near Yang-Gun village where Benford and fellow soldiers appear traveling by jeep and moving on foot through rugged terrain. Several photographs were taken on Koje Island the site of a large United Nations prisoner of war camp that operated from 1951 to 1953 and became internationally known after a North Korean prisoner uprising resulted in the temporary capture of the American camp commander. Nearly all photographs are captioned with names and locations and the archive also retains Benford's Selective Service identification cards.

The Korean War occurred during the first decade after the formal desegregation of the U.S. armed forces and marked one of the earliest large scale tests of integrated military units. By the early 1950s the Army was gradually implementing racial integration across training installations and overseas commands bringing together white Black and Latino soldiers in units that would previously have been segregated during World War II. This album documents that transformation at ground level capturing a cohort of soldiers training traveling and serving together in the years immediately following the policy change. The images also provide geographic documentation of key wartime locations including Fort Riley Yokohama Koje Island and the northeastern Korean front near battlefields such as Bloody Ridge and Heartbreak Ridge. Album contains 116 black and white silver gelatin photographs and four color photographs mounted on 17 pages most measuring approximately 3.5 x 3.5 inches with sizes ranging from about 2 x 2.25 inches to 10 x 8 inches. Hard shell cover illustrated with a map of Japan and the Korean Peninsula. Front cover detached and lacking rear cover minor chipping at page margins and several photographs loose. Photographs themselves remain clear with strong contrast. Overall condition very good. unknown‎

‎Black Soldier in the Korean war‎

‎African American Military History Integrated U.S. Army Soldiers Photo Archive Korea and Post WWII 1950s‎

‎1957. Vernacular photograph archive of African American soldiers in integrated U.S. Army units circa 1950s documents the early implementation of military desegregation following Executive Order 9981 and provides visual evidence of Black and white soldiers serving together during and after World War II including the Korean War. The photographs place African American servicemen within the first generation of formally integrated military units preceding broader civil rights gains in civilian society. Scenes of joint training transport and daily life show Black soldiers operating alongside white counterparts in contexts ranging from shipboard movement to antiaircraft defense positions indicating the practical realities of integration in active and post-conflict environments. The archive captures both structured military activity and informal moments offering a record of service that contrasts with the segregated conditions that had defined earlier periods of U.S. military history.

United States and Korea circa 1950s. Archive of 21 silver gelatin vernacular photographs with several images bearing manuscript captions on the verso identifying individuals and locations including one noting Korea 1957-1958. Photographs depict a range of settings including military bases in Korea stateside camps shipboard scenes and antiaircraft gun emplacements in snowy terrain. Multiple images show interracial groups of soldiers posing with rifles and submachine guns while others capture informal activities including one sequence featuring a soldier holding an inflated puffer fish aboard a ship. One photograph includes a note written in Italian on the verso indicating cross-cultural contact or circulation. Composition and subject matter vary from posed group portraits to candid operational and leisure scenes.

Created during the first decade of enforced military integration these photographs align with the transitional period in which desegregation policies were implemented unevenly across the armed forces with fuller integration not realized until the mid-1950s. The Korean War served as a critical testing ground for integrated units accelerating changes in military structure and social dynamics within the ranks. This archive provides a ground-level view of those developments documenting both the normalization of interracial military service and the persistence of shared routines duties and environments across racial lines. Light wear from handling with minor surface marks and occasional verso annotations; overall very good condition. unknown‎

‎Black Troops in Korea War‎

‎African American Military Service Cold War Deployments in Korea and Europe Photographic Archive 1960s‎

‎1964. Anonymous photographs of African American soldiers stationed in Korea and Europe produced c. 1960s document Black military service during the Cold War and provide primary-source evidence for the study of U.S. Army deployments racial integration in the post-World War II military and lived experience within forward operating environments near geopolitical flashpoints. The images place African American servicemen at installations including Camp Kaiser in South Korea located within proximity to the Korean Demilitarized Zone and in European urban and alpine settings indicating rotational or multi-theater deployment. The archive supports research into the role of Black soldiers in Cold War containment strategy as well as the everyday conditions mobility and social environments encountered by enlisted personnel across Asia and Europe during a period of sustained global military presence.

Archive of 24 original black and white silver gelatin photographs c. 1960s primarily measuring approximately 4" x 3". At least half of the images are identified as taken in Korea with multiple captions including "Camp Kaiser" "Korean Home" "Village" and "CO Area" situating the group within a U.S. Army installation environment composed of cinder block structures and Quonset huts approximately 60 miles north of Seoul and within range of North Korean artillery positions. One overhead view shows the full layout of Camp Kaiser while other images depict African American soldiers in field conditions described as "Cold Wet" trekking and camping in rugged terrain. Additional Korean scenes include a soldier leaning against a tank marked "Kimchee" and an airfield photograph showing a chrome fighter jet surrounded by personnel alongside additional aircraft including a biplane. European photographs include a parade observed from an apartment window in a German-speaking alpine town featuring a float labeled "General Knuller" as well as street-level images of crowds deployed fire engines and soldiers observing from a Volkswagen Beetle. One image shows an African American soldier standing outside a synagogue marked by a Star of David with a flag bearing the inscription "Troop Att 1964" indicating interaction with local religious or commemorative sites.

The photographs align with the global positioning of U.S. forces during the Cold War particularly in South Korea following the Korean War armistice and across Western Europe as part of NATO-aligned defense strategy. African American soldiers serving in an officially desegregated military after 1948 participated in these deployments while navigating both military hierarchy and broader social transformations associated with the Civil Rights era. The archive captures a range of activities from patrol and training environments to civic encounters and public events offering a geographically dispersed visual record of Black military presence within U.S. Cold War operations. Light wear and minor handling present; captions and details remain legible; overall very good condition. unknown‎

‎African American Soldiers of the 10th Cavalry and 369th Infantry Photograph Archive‎

These images record soldiers from several historically significant Black military units including the 9th U.S. Cavalry the 10th Cavalry and the 369th Infantry Regiment. African American soldiers served in large numbers during World War I despite segregation in the armed forces and the war marked a turning point in public recognition of Black military service. The photographs capture cavalry movement machine gun training and celebratory returns from the European front preserving visual evidence of the military presence and public visibility of Buffalo Soldiers during the conflict.

Archive consists of seven stereoview photographs published by the Keystone View Company during the World War I period. The views depict soldiers from the 9th U.S. Cavalry the 8th Regiment of Colored Troops the 10th Cavalry the Chicago Regiment of Colored Troops and the 15th Regiment of the 369th Infantry. Two stereoviews show Black machine gun companies operating Lewis guns one of the principal light machine guns used on the Western Front during the war. Another view shows Troop K of the 10th Cavalry moving on horseback at Camp Chickamauga in Georgia. Additional stereoviews depict African American soldiers returning from European service and marching in public celebrations including scenes of troops parading along major boulevards such as Fifth Avenue in New York.

The Buffalo Soldier regiments had already established a long military record before the First World War. Units such as the 10th Cavalry formed part of the segregated Regular Army created after the Civil War and served in campaigns across the western United States during the Indian Wars later participating in the Spanish American War the Philippine American War and operations during the Mexican Revolution. World War I marked one of the final periods in which cavalry units remained visible in American military organization as mechanized armor and motorized vehicles soon replaced mounted troops. At the same time Black soldiers who returned from service were celebrated in wartime parades yet continued to face segregation and racial discrimination within American society. Stereoview cards remain well preserved with light age wear typical of early twentieth century photographic prints. Very good condition overall and a visually compelling record of Buffalo Soldiers during the World War I era. unknown‎
