[WARTIME PROPAGANDA - GLORIES OF WAR].
プロパガンダ紙風船. Puropaganda kamifūsen. Propaganda Paper Balloons.
Japan. Circa 1942. Colour illustrations 3 origami "balloons" 15 x 7cm very good. The first balloon features bold illustrations of warships soldiers in combat and artillery pieces transforming a simple toy into a celebration of military might. The second displays award-winning slogans from a 1942 national propaganda competition including the infamous "欲しがりません勝つまでは" "We shall not ask for anything until victory is won"—a mantra of homefront sacrifice. Most chilling is the third balloon's juxtaposition: cheerful scenes of children playing with pigeons are undercut by ominous warnings like "spies are on the train and everywhere" revealing how paranoia infiltrated even innocent imagery. . unknown

(Spanish-American War).
A LOT of 15 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS of SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR TROOPS and ROUGH RIDERS at camp.

Possibly Florida circa 1898. 1898. Very good. - A lot of 15 original 3-1/8 inch by 5-3/8 inch black & white photographs of Spanish-American War soldiers at a training camp quite possibly in Florida. The images depict uniformed troops lined up for inspection as well groups of soldiers at rest and recreation or performing tasks amongst rows of tents or in the fields. Several images depict small groups or individuals posing for portraits and one of the images depicts a large row of horses likely those of the Rough Riders being tended by soldiers as others perform tasks around the camp. There is but minor soiling to the verso of the photos and the edges are very slightly curled and could easily be pressed down. Very good.

The Spanish-American War was fought between Spain and the United States from April 21 to August 13 1898 following the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in Havana. The United States intervened in the Cuban Revolution and the Philippine Revolution the latter leading into the Philippine-American War. The war ended Spanish influence in the Americas Asia and the Pacific. The United States for its part gained sovereignty over Puerto Rico Guam and the Philippines.

The First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry known as the Rough Riders trained at Camp Riverside in San Antonio Texas then moved to Tampa Florida as they awaited embarkment for Cuba.
(Possibly Florida), circa 1898.

[Fashion] [World War II] Gladys Warren
Archive of Original Pencil Drawings and Watercolors 1941-1945
England 1941. Very Good. Substantial collection of original amateur artwork and fashion plates dated 1941 to 1945 by a young woman named Gladys Warren almost all pieces signed "G. Warren" "G.W." or "Gladys Warren". The collection consists of nine large format watercolors 56x38cm.; one small format watercolor 32.5x23; four large format pencil sketches 56x38cm.; and twelve small format pencil sketches 33.5x19cm. totaling twenty-six 26 individual pieces. Some dust soil and minor wear from handling watercolors not examined out of individual shrink wrap. A Very Good or better collection overall.

Collection of drawings and watercolors almost exclusively depicting women in the latest fashions or in uniform. The range of the large format watercolors indicate that this was possibly a burgeoning professional dossier including examples of day wear sleep wear evening wear and swim wear. The large format pencil drawings include two historic fashion illustrations the only titled image in the group is "Madeira 1884" and one nude study.

Of special note however is the series of twelve small pencil sketches all accomplished on the versos of what appear to be mimeographed World War II aircraft maintenance reports. Indeed the October 28 1941 "London Gazette" lists a Gladys Florence Warren among the members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force WAAF though we find little else to pinpoint the artist. With the dearth of ready paper experienced during World War II perhaps Warren filched these leaves on which to practice her art Most of these sketches depict attractive women either seen in close-up or as usual modeling the latest uniforms and fashions while the verso details the assemblage or maintenance of engine covers handbrakes or a "carburettor."

A pleasing survival of the English home front juxtaposing fashion femininity and aircraft mechanics. unknown

[Spanish Civil War] Vaill Amanda
Hotel Florida: Truth Love and Death in the Spanish Civil War.

New York:: Farrar Straus & Giroux 2014. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Near Fine tight copy with discreet remainder dot in a Fine unclipped dust jacket. Madrid 1936. In a city blasted by a civil war six people meet and find their lives changed forever. Ernest Hemingway his career stalled his marriage sour hopes that this war will give him fresh material and new romance; Martha Gellhorn an ambitious novice journalist hungry for love and experience thinks she will find both with Hemingway in Spain. Robert Capa and Gerda Taro idealistic young photographers based in Paris want to capture history in the making and are inventing modern photojournalism in the process. And Arturo Barea chief of the Spanish government's foreign press office and Ilsa Kulcsar his Austrian deputy are struggling to balance truth-telling with loyalty to their sometimes compromised cause a struggle that places both of them in peril. Beginning with the cloak-and-dagger plot that precipitated the first gunshots of the war and moving forward month by month to the end of the conflict. Hotel Florida traces the tangled and disparate wartime destinies of these three couples against the backdrop of a critical moment in history: a moment that called forth both the best and the worst of those caught up in it. In this noir landscape of spies soldiers revolutionaries and artists the shadow line between truth and falsehood sometimes became faint indeed your friend could be your enemy and honesty could get you or someone else killed.Years later Hemingway would say "It is very dangerous to write the truth in war and the truth is very dangerous to come by." In Hotel Florida from the raw material of unpublished letters and diaries official documents and recovered reels of film the celebrated biographer Amanda Vaill has created a narrative of love and reinvention that is finally a story about truth: finding it telling it and living itwhatever the cost.
Farrar, Straus, & Giroux, hardcover
