Prs" located in small print top left corner of the front page. <br /> <br /> Soldier writes; "At Present our armies are lying still or nearly so for the weather is too hot to make any heavy movements just now but it seems that the Southern Confederacy fairly trembles to its very center and I know that many of her soldiers are satisfied to quit and would like to get out of it pretty well but like the Yankees they must stick to it until their officers become convinced of a similar fact.they must certainly see they are whipped but their pride keeps them from acknowledging it." He also writes about a man hanged back home for stealing horses. He mentions the loss of a steamboat named "Alice Dean." This steamboat operated on the Mississippi and was captured and burned by the Confederates. n.p. unknown

Lieutenant George Patton was one of the Associate Editors of the RASP. His photographs on horses can be found on pages 135 138 347 and 440. Patton was the author of 2 articles titled "Mounted Horsemanship" pages 162-169 and "Army Racing and Records for 1913" pages 345-343. Patton graduated from West Point in 1909. According to a note found on the back of the glass frame William Mann addressed this letter to Col. William S. Amweg a pension attorney near Lancaster Pennsylvania area in the years 1849-1851. The number 200 is written top of the paper. Unfortunately the note affixed to the back of the frame is now missing. Col. Amweg's name is not found in this document.<br /> <br /> The letter transcribed as best as possible reads: "Georgetown June 8 1851 Sir Having heard not reading that there was an appropriation being made for the last legislative body appropriating a sum of $30000 dollars for defraying the expenses of the First & Second Pennsylvania volunteers in Mexico and not being to the whole circumstance belonging to the Co. of First Pennsylvania Ridgement under Colonel Wincape and Lt. Col. Samuel Black therefore I wish you to intercede for me and lose nothing. I have great acquaintances in your place Rea Frarer Jones B. Canfuier Dr. Casally &c. which will certify that I was there. Reece was there also. The reference would be to Brigadier General John Bennet of Philadelphia who was my captain in Mexico and who would be a friend in need. Just ask for I cannot say much at present but request an answer respecting these things and oblige yours most respectively William Mann. P.S. I would inform you that when I landed in Philadelphia I was sickly and destitute of friends that I sold my discharge papers for the sake of getting home decently and therefore have no certificate to show but making reference to General Bennet Jr. can be had nothing more at present but remain yours &c William Mann. Letter written aboard the U.S. Frigate "Raritan" off Pensacola Navy Yard April 3rd 1846 and has a Pensacola post mark and date of April 6 . Written on the eve of the Mexican War April 24 1846 to February 2 1848. Content summarized:<br /> <br /> Thomas Roney Midshipman writes a lengthy letter to his brother about his situation in Pensacola and requests his brother's help with family debts. He writes:“There is very little news from Mexico the latest is that Mr. Slidell has been informed that the government could not receive a Minister from the United States but that there were ready to receive a Commissioner for the settlement of the Texas question. We had consequently demanded his passports and is expected here very shortly in the Ship Manzo. The Mexicans have been making every preparation for a war…were preparing to place Santa Anna at the head of the government again….†Roney had been transferred from the U.S. Brig Bainbridge back to the Raritan. He was relieved as “master†and appointed "midshipman". Roney has no problem with this because the Raritan is more comfortable. Roney recently returned from Rio de Janerio and had to take large advance to pay off debts. The only regret of his demotion to midshipman is that he can’t send money home to Mother any more hopes brothers can make it up. Good condition. <br /> <br /> Ms. Burke responds to Mr. Dreker's letter and thanks him with glowing compliments. She remarks about current events and friends. "Cecile's brother has just arrived from Columbia. He laughs at the dull dreary appearance of Charleston and gives an animated description of the life and gaiety in Columbia." Ms. Burke laments the miserable weather in Charleston and is hoping for a break in the "darkness." Regarding the War she writes "Mr. Westmore says he heard this morning from very good authority that the 5th Cavalry would NOT be removed from their present scene of service. Ms Burke is sad to see her friend leave and writes "I would be really sorry to have you leave now especially as our intercourse was becoming so and friendly. I regret very much to have it interrupted but wish that Distance will not break a friendship which has been so pleasant thus far." Ms. Burke encourages her friend to write as conditions permit and to be safe and quickly return. She states "Hope points her beacon light so the happy day not very distant when you shall return to your native state covered with laurels and enjoy the blessing of peace purchased through much suffering. Our prospects are so bright at present. I cannot but think that the summer roses fade or the leaves of autumn wither the of War will ease its thunder and the glad notes of Peace shall re-sound once more through our Southern land. n.p. unknown

Included with the two page letter is a silver gelatin photograph portrait approx. 5" x 3.5" of a well groomed Davis. Paper and photograph in very good condition. <br /> <br /> Richard Harding Davis was a writer journalist and World War I correspondent. He was friends with Theodore Roosevelt. This letter was written less than 1 year before his death from heart attack at his home in Mount Kisco New York at the age of 51. Transcribed letter reads:<br /> <br /> Dear Johnstone<br /> <br /> As the man says in the play to the girl who wants to marry her "Don't ask me for one thing I can't give you." I would do anything for you but write about something I don't know anything about. Besides even if I studied the subject and "read up" the material you threaten to send me what I would write in that way would do none of us any good. Please wait until we are all once more at "the front" and I can see the Red Cross people at work and then I shall only be too glad to give them the thanks and praise we owe them.<br /> <br /> I hope you are feeling fine and daisy and I send you my best wishes always.<br /> <br /> Sincerely yours <br /> <br /> Richard Harding Davis. Virginia Tennessee: Virginia and Tennessee Railroad Company 1864. n/a. Broadside. Fair. Broadside. Paper measures approx. 8.25" x 6". Paper is folded creased with a couple of pin holes at the folds. Contents printed and hand written. Departing Depot name difficult to translate but the freight was forwarded to Saltville Virginia known for its salt supplies. The Virginia and Tennessee Railroad Company was vital for transporting supplies for the Confederate Army. This railroad was later incorporated by Norfolk Southern. During the War Robert L. Owen Sr. who had been one of the engineers surveying for the railroad and who had risen through the ranks succeeded McDaniel as president. The railroad became a key supply food and troop movement route for the Confederate States Army particularly from the capital of Richmond to the interior at Chattanooga Tennessee. The V&T moved also key raw materials: copper from mines near Cleveland Tennessee lead from mines near Bristol salt from Saltville Virginia and saltpeter from caves throughout the region. Union forces finally captured much of the railroad and destroyed tracks and rolling stock in late 1864 although service was periodically interrupted by a series of cavalry raids earlier in the war. Briggs: Dear Sir I take time to inform you that I am well and hope these lines will find you the same. As I have always taken you to be a friend to me and still hold the same confidence in you. And As I have many difficulties to incounter here and my wife continues writing to me about the affairs at home. She says the debts that I left her to pay was larger than she expected. She tells me that Cliger Bushnell wants five dollars that I ow'd him. But I thought That I paid all but 4 more dollars that morning I left. But perhaps I mistake and if so I hope you will see to it for I want to pay him all I owe to him. I will write my wife about it. I have many difficulties to incounter here. Albert is sick. I have to take care of him besides all the labor that falls upon me. Besides I left Albert with the baggage wagons that day we cross the Rappahannock River. I was detailed to carry provisions upon the field but we could not hold our ground. The rebels were too strong fortified. We had to retreat in the night. I hope you will write Let me know what the prospects is for our country. You have the chance to be informed better than I do. I have to write upon my knapsak so excuse it. respectfully yours David Downs. These 3 page letter includes the stamped envelope with stamp and Washington D.C. postmark. The envelope is addressed "Mr. H. B. Briggs Westville Green Co. Ny York." Soldier record included with letter indicated David Downs was 38 when enlisted 8/27/1862 at Lexington NY as a Private. Speech given during an Alumni Association meeting Dartmouth. <br /> <br /> From wikipedia:<br /> <br /> Caleb Sprague Henry was born in Rutland Massachusetts on August 2 1804.2 He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1825 and studied theology at Andover Theological Seminary and New Haven.3. In 1828 he became a Congregational minister at Greenfield Massachusetts and in 1833 removed to Hartford Connecticut. In 1834 he started the American Advocate of Peace the organ of the American Peace Society. In 1835 he entered the ministry of the Protestant Episcopal church.1 He also became professor of moral and intellectual philosophy in Bristol College Pennsylvania 1835–1838. In 1837 with the aid of Rev. Francis L. Hawks he established the New York Review. He was professor of history and philosophy in New York University from 1839 to 1852. Later he was rector of various churches but was chiefly engaged in literary work. He translated Guizot's History of Civilization and other works from the French and was the author of several works including Compendium of Christian Antiquities 1837 Social Welfare and Human Progress 1860 and Satan as a Moral Philosopher 1877.4 He died in Newburgh New York on March 9 1884.25<br /> <br /> <br /> Sabin 31387.
