Spine ends and joints scuffed one band split else a very good set with the bookplate of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States Commandery of the State of Illinois on front pastedowns of most volumes shelf sticker on foot of most backstrips most circulars quite fresh binding firm. 8vo. The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States begun in Philadelphia in 1865 was modeled on the Society of the Cincinnati and formed to protect the republic amid rumors of a plot to destroy the government after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Among its members were Presidents Ulysses S. Grant Rutherford B. Hayes Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley. By 1899 it had over 8000 members which included nearly every officer of note. <br /> <br /> This is a complete collection of all 433 Minnesota Commandery circulars through 1922 ending with the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. Contains circulars papers treasurers' reports black-bordered "In Memoriam" notices each with a biography of the deceased annual meeting notices of which most are signed corrected and annotated by the Minnesota Commandery recorders beginning with George Q. White; they include the disposition of each person seeking membership. A few other items such as invitations a special program with a portrait of Lincoln etc bound in. Large "In Memoriam" notice for Rutherford B. Hayes. <br /> <br /> A wealth of information and a very scarce collection which would be nearly impossible to assemble today. James Reese Europe 1881–1919 was a composer and bandleader instrumental in the transition from ragtime to jazz whose popularity and influence is impossible to overstate. He conducted the Clef Club Orchestra in New York City which only played music by African-American composers and was the first Black orchestra to perform at Carnegie Hall. Europe’s Society Orchestra toured the country with dancers Vernon and Irene Castle popularizing ragtime dancing. In 1916 Europe enlisted with the 369th Infantry Regiment also known as the Harlem Hellfighters a primarily Black regiment that became one of the most highly decorated American units in World War I. Europe was a second lieutenant and led the Hellfighters Band which toured France in 1818 and is credited with bringing jazz to the continent of Europe. James Europe died in Boston in 1919 when a member of his band taking issue with Europe’s criticism stabbed him in the neck during the intermission of a concert at Mechanics Hall.<br /> <br /> Offered here is the sheet music for “Good Night Angeline†composed by James Reese Europe and his frequent collaborators Noble Sissle 1889–1975 and James Herbert “Eubie†Blake†1887–1983. The cover features a photograph of the Hellfighters Band above a portrait of Europe. We find four other copies of “Good Night Angeline†at the Oakland Public Library the Library Company of Philadelphia the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. Interior pages with some wear to edges excellent. Overall very good to excellent. Sheet music for “We Are Americans Too†by Andy Razaf Eubie Blake and Charles L. Cooke. The three were significant figures in the jazz and ragtime scenes. Razaf 1895–1973 was a composer and lyricist known for jazz standards “Ain’t Misbehavin’†and “Honeysuckle Rose.†Pianist and composer Blake 1887–1983 was a child prodigy and vaudevillian who wrote the musical Shuffle Along 1921 the first Broadway production to be written directed produced and starring only Black artists. “Doc†Cooke 1891–1958 was a bandleader and arranger with a prolific recording ensemble who later worked at Radio City Music Hall and composed orchestrations for Broadway shows. The sheet music was published by Handy Brothers Music Company the publishing company of musician musicologist and “Father of the Blues†W. C. Handy. Handy donated 100 copies of “We Are Americans Too†to Martin Luther King Jr. to raise money for the Montgomery Improvement Association.1<br /> <br /> Razaf’s lyrics for the song proclaim African Americans’ patriotism and roles in the US’s major wars from the American Revolution to World War I; the cover art shows Black soldiers marching together in Revolutionary War Civil War and WWI-era uniforms. At the time of writing the US was deep in the Jim Crow era; African Americans during World War II served in segregated units were mostly excluded from officership and were treated poorly at home and abroad. Razaf writes: “None have loved Old Glory more than we. / Or have shown a greater loyalty / Bunker Hill to the Rhine / We’ve been right there in line / Serving the Red White and Blue / All our future is here / Everything we hold dear / WE ARE AMERICANS TOO.â€<br /> <br /> We find four copies on OCLC.<br /> <br /> 1 Martin Luther King Jr. to Lovie M. New York: Wm. A. Pond & Co 1865. Folio sheet music lithographed pictorial cover. 6 pp. including cover. 9.5 x 12.25 inches. Typical light age toning and minor edge wear; very good example with strong impression remnants of string at spine removed from a larger volume. A vivid piece of end-of-war political satire commemorating the capture of Confederate president Jefferson Davis whose attempted escape in May 1865 quickly became the subject of popular ridicule in Northern newspapers and song sheets. The cover lithograph depicts Davis fleeing through a wooded encampment while dressed in women’s clothing a reference to widely circulated reports that he attempted to evade Union troops by donning a shawl or petticoats; in truth he had borrowed a shawl from his wife. Behind him a Union soldier points in recognition while onlookers react with amusement. The music was written by Henry Tucker a prolific mid-nineteenth-century songwriter known for sentimental and topical pieces with lyrics by George Cooper one of the most active American lyricists of the period and collaborator with composers such as Stephen Foster and J. R. Thomas. Together they produced a number of patriotic and topical songs during the Civil War years. The myth of Davis in women’s clothing was represented a few different ways though this large lithographic illustration done by Henry C. Eno is possibly the most iconic. Wm. A. Pond & Co unknown

Cooper with the kind regards of Catherine Gansevoort Lansing Albany N.Y. Dec. 1877". Lansing was Henry Gansevoort's sister.<br /> <br /> Gansevoort was a decorated soldier who served in battle during the Civil War. He served briefly as Private in the 7th NY Militia in Washington DC but soon obtained a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th US Artillery. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in March 1862 and served with his battery on the Peninsula and at Second Manassass. He was on the Maryland Campaign and saw action at Antietam.<br /> <br /> This biography is complemented with extracts from his letters to home which add much detail to the description of each battle many of the extracts chosen by his sister.<br /> <br /> 4to 335pp. Bound in full red morocco gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers gilt decorated spine beveled edges aeg. Revolutionary War period writ in which James Smyth demands 480 pounds from William Bath pilot in Charles-town. Signed by William Drayton Chief Justice at Charleston
1776. Ephemera. Very good condition. A Revolutionary War period writ issued in Charleston South Carolina signed by William Henry Drayton. A large sum of money is demanded of William Bath pilot of Charleston by James Smyth. Bath is not present in Charleston and somehow the writ is transferred to Sarah Johnson who it is inferred is in possession of Bath's property including a Negro girl named Lucey. The sheriff Thomas Gimbell executes the writ on Sarah Johnson. <br /> <br /> The writ is executed at a transition time for the American colonies from the Colonial to the Revolutionary War period. The form was issued on September 17 1776 just 2 months after the Declaration of Independence. As such all the pre-printed areas that refer to the "Province" South Carolina are crossed out and "State" is inserted. "Year of our Reign is also crossed through. The money demanded is in pounds. Included in the writ is reference to a "negro named Lucey with one Sarah Jones in Union Street" with a long statement by Thomas Gimball Sheriff of Charles Town signed. The writ was served Oct. 17 1776 and filed Jan 10th 1777. The witness is the Hble. William Henry Drayton Chief Justice at Charleston. <br /> <br /> It is not completely clear which William Drayton has signed the writ. It is most likely that of William Henry Drayton Sept. 1742-September 3 1779. He was the son of John Drayton and Charlotta Bull daughter of the colony's Governor William Bull. He was educated in England at Westminster School and Oxford before returning home in 1764. He served as a delegate for South Carolina to the Continental Congress in 1778 and 1779. He died of typhus in Philadelphia while in office. His signature "Wm Hy Drayton" is on the left side of the writ partially obscured by the duty stamp. <br /> <br /> However his cousin was William Drayton Sr. 1732-1790. Also born in Ashley River South Carolina he was the son of Thomas Drayton III & Elizabeth. Drayton was educated in the Middle Temple in London England in 1754. He read law to enter the South Carolina Bar in 1756 and was thereafter a Justice of the peace for Berkeley County South Carolina until 1763. From 1763 to 1780 he was Chief justice for the Province of East Florida. In 1789 he was a judge of the South Carolina Admiralty Court and an associate judge of the South Carolina Supreme Court appointed by George Washington. <br /> <br /> William Bath is included on the Grand Jury List for the "District of George Town" Parish of Prince George in 1778 & 1780. There is a marriage record for a William Bath to Elizabeth Baker widow on 2 Nov 1771. South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research Vol 10 #3. Sarah Jones is possibly the widow of Thomas Jones Sr whose will was probated in 1773. In the 1790 census she is listed as the head of the household with 2 boys under 16 and 2 women and no slaves. In 1800 just the mother and daughter comprise the household. In 1806 & 1809 she is listed as a seamstress in two different Charleston directories Negrin's directory and Almanac for the year 1806 and Directory for the District of Charleston 1809 by Richard Hrabowski. There are a series of James Smith's spelled Smyth in the writ. James Smyth is listed in Charleston in 1758; in 1780 he is on the Petit Jury List for the "District of Charles Town Johns Island Colleton County"; in the 1790 Federal Census he is in the parish of St. Phillips and St. Michaels in Charleston with no slaves. <br /> <br /> Alas there is no further reference to "Lucey". <br /> <br /> The heading is trimmed off the top and it appears that this area referred to the King and was hence trimmed off. Written carefully below is "The State of South Carolina to all Singular the Sheriffs of the State aforesaid Greeting. Laid paper 13 x 6 3/4" printed on one side with manuscript additions docketed manuscript notations on the verso. Uniformly tanned. unknown

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1934. Hardcover. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavos. xvii 647; xi 621; xi 559 vi 594 pages. Indexed at the rear of Volumes II and IV. SIGNED and inscribed on the front flyleaf of Volume One "Autographed for / Dr. E. Howard Miller / with good wishes. / Douglas Southall Freeman". Hardcovers bound in red cloth and housed in an open front slipcase there might have originally been a front cover to the slipcase making it a box. The bindings show light to moderate rubbing and wear and are a little dulled or soiled from handling. Spines a little toned; there are a couple of splash marks on the spines of Volumes II & III. There is a diagonal crease at the top corner of Volume I. Early printings but not first printings. Each volume has the Scribner's Seal but the volumes do not have the Scribner's "A." Autograph Letter Signed 1861 - 11th West Virginia on War for the Union Stationary
Jackson County WV 1861. 8x5" 4pp bifolium on illustrated patriotic stationary manuscript letter in pencil and ink on two separate dates. Transmittal folds a few light stains but very legible and clean. <br /> <br /> Early Civil War letter from an S.A. Bartlett of Company K. 11th Regiment West Virginia describing life in Camp Curtis and early movements of railroad duty. Bartlett writes to his brother to describe the weather and camp life while inquiring as to his receipt of registers and photos previously sent by Bartlett. The two dates are December 7th and 9th of 1861 with the second date describing the movement from camp to a location called "burnt bridge" 25 miles below Sulpher sic Spring on the railroad:<br /> <br /> ". this bridge was burnt by the secsesh. once and it was garded by MO boys and I gess they was more scart than hurt but I am glad that we hav moved. We hav got a very pleasant plase hear it is on a hill about 200 feet above the water. Their was not onley 2 Companeys taken from the Rigement - they was Co. C. and Co. K. the rest is left at Sulp Springs. I dont think their is enny more danger hear than their was at Camp Curtis."<br /> <br /> <br /> Bartlett directs further correspondence to St. Louis "as long as we are on the move" reflecting the fluidity of early deployments. A vivid glimpse of the improvised unsettled nature of Union operations during the opening phase of the war. <br /> <br /> <br /> . unknown
