‎[Fine Binding] [Spanish American War] Latimer, Elizabeth Wormeley‎

‎Spain in the Nineteenth Century‎

‎Chicago: A.C. McClurg and Company 1897. First edition. 8vo 442pp. Illustrated with 23 plates. Pages unopened. Finely bound in full brown crushed morocco elaborately gilt decorated borders with red accents and gilt dentelles with the Spanish royal coat-of-arms in gilt and red on both covers t.e.g. Rubbed along upper joint else a near fine copy. Bookplate of A.J. Cox to front pastedown.

Really a nicely executed and elaborate binding of this text which relates some of the events leading up to the Spanish American War of 1898. Alfred J. Cox was a Chicago master book binder and collector and we would guess this book from a Chicago publisher was perhaps bound by Cox himself. It is listed in Catalogue of the Sumptuous 'Attic' Library of the late Alfred J.Cox which was sold at auction by the American Art Association in New York 1918. This title along with several others from the series by Latimer are listed as bound in full levant morocco in various colors #608. A nice example of American fine binding at the turn of the century. ‎[World War I]; [Navy]; [Prayer Books]; [Hymnals]; [Military]‎

‎A Prayer Book for the Public and Private Use of our Soldiers and Sailors; With Bible Readings and Hymns‎

‎Philadelphia: Bishop White Prayer Book Society 1917. Hardcover. Near Very Good. 16mo. 29 cm x 21 cm. 2 3-192 pp. Blue publisher's cloth with a red border on each board red lettering on the front board flexible boards. There is a pocket on the rear board but nothing is in the pocket. Immediately after the title page the book states the motives and objects of the First World war: "We are glad to fight for the ultimate peace of the world and for the liberation of its peoples the German peoples included; for the rights of nations great and small and the privilege of men everywhere to choose their way of life and obedience . ". It is an excerpt from President Wilson's statement on the United States entering the First World War. An inscription on the free front endpaper reads: "Willis Winfried/Winfreed 506 S. Neil The next line is illegible Illinois 1917 - U.S.A. Great Lakes Illinois". The owner of this prayer book was either trembling while writing his inscription or his ink was exposed to moisture though the paper itself has no dampstain. This book clearly traveled with the naval recruit to Great Lakes the naval training station just north of Chicago. Although we cannot identify exactly who the owner was the item is significant as it is a record of what kind of item was important enough to a Navyman to transport to a war zone based on the book's significant wear and use we believe it traveled to the European theatre after the recruit completed his training at Great Lakes. Significant rubbing to the cloth rear gutter is cracked but the binding is holding. Bishop White Prayer Book Society hardcover‎

‎[Newspapers]; [Wisconsin]; [US Civil War]; [Elections]; [Anti-Lincoln] U S‎

‎The Wisconsin Daily Patriot‎

‎Madison Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Daily Patriot / Daily Patriot Printing House 1864. Newspaper. Very Good. Bifolium. 55 cm. x 40 cm. Newspaper printed in black. Text divided into six columns. Price of 15 cents in the first column of text. With a few small illustrations. The Wisconsin Daily Patriot began printing in 1853 and was a daily newspaper dedicating to the promotion of the Democratic Party and the idea that the country could not prosper unless it was under the leadership of politicians from the Democratic Party. This issue contains a prospectus of the editorial board's opinion on the 1864 election and has a long essay that heavily criticizes Lincoln. The writer argues that Lincoln is not the person to put down the rebellion and that he used the issue of American slavery as a tool to divide the country and seek his own power. The writer also makes clear that he believes that inequality between white and Black people was "mandated by God". The paper also contains what was then recent news of the Confederate Army's attack of Fort Stevens and of General Franklin's capture by the Confederates. It gives several eye-witness accounts of battle action. Finally the newspaper also contains plenty of advertisements for local Madison businesses including clothiers exterminators surgeons printing houses druggists and other shops. The newspaper is a clear account of northern prejudice anti-Lincoln sentiment and shows a fervent Democrat's perspective on the U.S. Civil War. Two faint dampspots and two folds to the paper. ‎Birds Eye View of Camp Travis. San Antonio Texas. Oct. 1917‎

‎San Antonio 1917. Very good. Large panoramic photograph 8 x 92 inches. Rolled. Minor wear at edges with one very short closed tear at top edge. Light blemish in negative at center of image. Light dust soiling and toning. An outstanding and extremely long panoramic photograph measuring well over 7.5 feet in length that depicts Camp Travis in San Antonio following its recent opening. Although the camp was open and housing an entire division-in-training at the time of this image the camp was still under construction as evidenced by the organized piles of lumber at the far right of the image and the incomplete barracks building in the center foreground. The panorama nevertheless gives a sense of the scope and size of the training camp with barracks and outbuildings stretching almost as far as the eye can see in the center and left sections of the photograph. Structures are sparser in the right-hand side of the image both because they as yet unbuilt and because some of the training fields were located in this part of the camp. The photographers Mayhart Studio of Chicago were responsible for a number of military and patriotic views during the United States' involvement in the Great War including the well-known "Living Flag" image of thousands of servicemen composing an American flag.

"On July 15 1917 after its selection as the training site for the Ninetieth Texas-Oklahoma Division of the army Camp Wilson was renamed Camp Travis in honor of Alamo hero William B. Travis. The camp was ready for occupancy on August 25 1917. Additional land was subsequently acquired for vital training facilities and numerous structures were erected by the soldier welfare agencies. Camp Travis comprised 18290 acres of which 5730 were on the main campsite adjoining Fort Sam Houston. The Ninetieth Division was organized at Camp Travis in September and October of 1917. During the summer of 1918 Camp Travis served as an induction and replacement center with an average strength in July of about 34000 White and Black troops. On December 3 Camp Travis was named as a demobilization center. The facility was also designated a local recruiting station and a regional recruit depot in March 1919. Some 62500 troops were discharged at Camp Travis in about eight months. The camp then became the home station of the Second Division. Its service as a separate entity was terminated however upon its absorption by Fort Sam Houston in 1922" -- Handbook of Texas Online.

A quite fascinating view of this enormous World War I-era training camp in San Antonio now a part of the even larger Fort Sam Houston military base on the east side of the city. We locate no other copies of this large and remarkable panorama. unknown‎

Boards soiled and rubbed minor scuffing to edges. Light occasional foxing. The album was given to Beasley in early December 1941 by his commanding officer and then presented by Beasley to his mother. By the time he received the yearbook Beasley had attained the rank of corporal. Interestingly in 2023 the mayor of Pacific Grove California issued a special proclamation recognizing the service of the 54th Coast Artillery in World War II noting that "Despite that these troops were armed and clothed with used weapons and secondhand uniforms dating to World War I they did not complain and served with pride and distinction."

OCLC records just four copies of this yearbook from the 54th's first year of service at the Pentago Library East Carolina University UNC-Chapel Hill and NYPL listed by either the cover title or the first sectional title page which gives the title as Historical and Pictorial Review Antiaircraft Training Center Camp Davis North Carolina 1941. ‎Panoramic Photograph of African American Midshipmen with Extensive Annotations on the Verso Identifying Over Sixty Soldiers‎

‎Great Lakes Il 1943. Good. Panoramic photograph 8 x 19.75 inches. A handful of heavy vertical creases irregularly rolled moderate edge wear minor soiling. A unique annotated panoramic photograph picturing the segregated Company 1011 of the United States Navy at the U.S. Naval Training Station in Great Lakes Illinois during World War II. The photograph appears to have belonged to Emerson O. Norton of Paris Illinois whose name and address are written in the margin of the verso. The remainder of the verso is comprised of a penciled chart in which about half of the 133 Midshipmen have signed next to the number keyed to their image on the front of the photograph. The soldiers also sometimes include their address or home city next to their name; the soldiers hail from cities all over the country including California the Midwest Michigan and Ohio Missouri and all the way down the eastern seaboard from New York to South Carolina and the Deep South from Alabama to Louisiana. A wonderful source for researching the African-American experience in World War II. unknown‎

‎Bird's Eye View. Camp Bowie Fort Worth Tex. October 1917‎

‎Chicago: Mayhart Studio 1917. Very good. Large panoramic photograph 8 x 90.5 inches. Rolled. Light wear at edges with a couple of small chips and very short closed tears along top edge. minor dust soiling and toning. A fabulous and extremely long panoramic photograph measuring approximately 7.5 feet in length that depicts Camp Bowie in Fort Worth during October 1917. At this time the camp was still under construction but also housed an entire infantry division in training for World War I. Ongoing construction efforts are clearly evident as piles of lumber in various states of organization occupy the field in the center foreground. Already completed barracks and other out buildings occupy the right of the image and thousands of army tents sweep into the background of the center and left portions of the image. A group of standard houses likely for officers and their families is located at the lower left of the image. The photographers Mayhart Studio of Chicago were responsible for a number of military and patriotic views during the United States' involvement in the Great War including the well-known "Living Flag" image of thousands of servicemen composing an American flag.

"Construction of Camp Bowie began on July 18 1917. The camp in the Arlington Heights neighborhood about three miles west of downtown Fort Worth was established by the United States War Department to give training to the Thirty-sixth Infantry Division. Local officials expected financial gain and urged that the camp be located at Fort Worth. Including the adjacent rifle range and trench system the site encompassed 2186 acres. Camp Bowie's greatest average monthly strength was recorded in October 1917 as 30901. For about five months after the departure of the Thirty-sixth for France in July 1918 the camp functioned as an infantry replacement and training facility with monthly population ranging from 4164 to 10527. Shortly after the Armistice on November 11 1918 Camp Bowie was designated a demobilization center. By May 31 1919 it had discharged 31584 men. The heaviest traffic occurred in June when it processed thousands of combat veterans of the Thirty-sixth and Ninetieth Texas-Oklahoma divisions. The demobilization having been concluded Camp Bowie was closed on August 15 1919" -- Handbook of Texas Online.

A quite remarkable photographic document of this short-lived World War I-era army camp in Fort Worth whose grounds and surrounding neighborhood are now touted by the municipal tourism office as "the city's premier commerce corridor." We locate no other examples of this excellent and large panorama. Mayhart Studio unknown‎

‎Fort Knox Ky: June 1941. Good. Panoramic photograph 8 x 36 inches. Vertical creases throughout minor edge wear. The African-American soldiers of Company A 4th Battalion of the United States Army's Armored Force Replacement Training Center are pictured here along with their white officers who sit at center of the first row. The company numbers almost 200 soldiers all featured here in beige uniforms and envelope caps arranged in four rows. The soldiers who composed the Armored Force were specially trained at Fort Knox in mechanized warfare especially in tanks.

"The Armored Force School and the Armored Force Replacement Center were officially established at Fort Knox on December 1 1940. The school trained armored force soldiers in military fundamentals and in specific areas such as tank gunnery armor tactics communications and maintenance. As the armored force grew and the U.S. entered World War II the school expanded proportionately. From an initial cadre of 155 officers and 1458 enlisted men in October 1940 the school grew to more than 700 officers and 3500 enlisted men by May 1943. The Armored Force School at the peak of its operation during the war operated on two daily shifts to satisfy the demand for qualified armor soldiers. The training reflected the rapid evolution of armored warfare doctrine which changed constantly in the face of battle experience and in the alterations to the force structure and its tables of organization and equipment" - Gary Kempf The History of Fort Knox. ‎Pay Tribute to the Memory of Martin Luther King Jr. Saturday April 27th. March Against the War Racism Poverty Repression and the Draft.Rally at San Francisco Civic Center.caption title and first few lines of text‎

‎San Francisco 1968. Very good. Broadsheet on blue paper 13.5 x 8.5 inches. Slight discoloration along top and bottom edges minor edge wear a few soft creases old horizontal folds. An exceedingly rare broadsheet advertising a multi-faceted public march and rally against the Vietnam War and "racism poverty and repression" which took place in San Francisco California about three weeks after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The organizers of the event the April 27 Mobilization Committee framed the day's activities around Dr. King's opposition to the Vietnam War; the broadside calls for the protesters to "pay tribute to the memory" of Dr. King his portrait is printed at the top of the front side of the broadsheet and the entirety of the verso prints excerpts of an April 4 1967 speech by Dr. King railing against the Vietnam War. Particularly interesting is the eclectic list of speakers who participated in the day's events on April 27 1968 which included Muhammad Ali Vanessa Redgrave Jeanette Rankin Bobby Seale Arnold True and Sidney Roger. Ali was in the midst of his appeal after his conviction for draft evasion the previous year and was a natural candidate to speak against the injustices of the Vietnam War. Bobby Seale co-founder of the Black Panthers was four months away from participating in protests at the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention after which he was arrested and tried as part of the sham Chicago Eight fiasco.

The diversity of the speakers echoes the quantity of different issues represented by the current broadsheet: Civil Rights the Vietnam War the recent assassination of Dr. King Muhammad Ali's legal fight against the war Bobby Seale's controversial role with the Bay Area Black Panthers women's rights and the role of the American military. We could locate no other copies of this broadsheet in auction history or OCLC. unknown‎

National guard units were called up in 1916 to guard the border while General Pershing made his incursions into Mexico against revolutionary and regular military units involved in the Mexican revolution and civil war of the 1910s. ‎Panoramic Photograph of an African-American Military Company at Camp Pike Arkansas‎

‎Camp Pike Ar: Ewing Incorporated Official Photographers Sept. 30 1918. Fair. Regularly-spaced heavy creasing center crease almost split through some small chips and tears minor soiling. A wonderful image but will require preservation. A captivating panoramic photograph featuring the African American members of the 74th and 94th "casual" companies of the United States Army during their time training for service in World War I at Camp Pike Arkansas. The caption in the negative reads "Casual Cos. 74 & 94." Casual companies are nontraditional units of the Army meant as holding units for combat replacements groups awaiting transport or discharge a specialized unit assembled for specific duty or one comprised of soldiers on convalescent duty. These units are not usually pictured in military photographs much less in panoramic images during wartime.

The present panoramic photograph features about 150 African American servicemen in uniform and a few white officers arranged in roughly four rows at Camp Pike located just north of Little Rock. Camp Pike opened in late 1917 and served as a training center for troops in World War I; towards the end of the war Camp Pike was used as a replacement training facility and as a demobilization station either of which could explain the presence of casual companies at the base. Since 1937 Camp Pike has been known as Camp Joseph T. Robinson. Images of African American units serving during the First World War are rare especially from casual companies and especially from training sites in Arkansas. A fantastic image in less-than-ideal condition but priced accordingly. Ewing Incorporated, Official Photographers, Sept. 30 unknown‎

Louis Benecke's defense against accusations involving the murder of a Missouri Bushwhacker during the Civil War. On August 8 1864 William Carter a Union soldier visiting his mother at the family farm near Kaytesville Missouri "was taken prisoner by Bushwhcker Jim Jackson's gang stripped naked tied to a tree in the yard and shot at by the gang till his body was riddled with over thirty bullets and he was then left for dead still tied to the tree." The author of the present work Louis Benecke captain of Company I of the 49th Missouri Volunteers was rumored to have retaliated by killing "one of the participants in that murder." Here Benecke defends his good name against such slanders through contemporary orders affidavits and other material that refute the notion that he was involved. Benecke writes that "I was a mere boy when placed in responsible positions surrounded by intense partisan feeling hatred revenge and all that helped to bring about the unfortunate condition of things as they were in 1864-65." Most of the affidavits come from Missouri with one from Ohio and another from Texas.

"Reciting the events surrounding the death of William Carter of the 35th Regiment E. A couple of short closed tears and small perforations otherwise minor wear and soiling. Minor spotting along edges minor staining and some surface lift along top left edge left edge and left bottom edge from being previously framed. One of a group of panoramic photographs depicting Camp Stewart at El Paso during the Mexican Revolution 1910-1919 known here as the Mexican Border War or Pershing's Punitive Expedition. The camp was set up in 1916 and the goal of the conflict was to stop Pancho Villa's military actions on the United States side of the border. American and Mexican forces pursued Villa for months and managed to quash the rebellion but Pancho Villa himself was never captured. This photograph provides a good view of the tents and small building erected in this dry Texas landscape. The photographers J. Urban Medley and Isaac Shulman of El Paso Texas were prolific chroniclers of the American Southwest and Mexican borderlands with a studio at 1709 Montana. ‎[World War II]: [Film]‎

‎Japanese Press Sheet for The Beginning or the End the First Hollywood Film to Dramatize the Story of the Atomic Bombing of Japan‎

‎N.p. probably Washington D.C. or Los Angeles: MGM / Motion Picture Export Association 1952. Single sheet folded into a four page brochure with black and white photographic illustrations on front and rear 9.75 x 7 inches. Text mainly in Japanese but the list of "players" and production credits in both English and Japanese. A few tiny marks and mild edge wear else very good. A Japanese-language flyer advertising the 1947 MGM movie The Beginning or the End a docu-drama about the development of the atomic bomb to the Japanese market. Interestingly in spite of the press release it seems highly likely the film was not released in cinemas in Japan; we have been unable to find any record of the film being shown there. The film mixed dramatized scenes with actual footage of the bombing in telling the story beginning with the Manhattan Project and proceeding through the bombing. Major Hollywood actors participated in the project including Brian Donlevy Robert Walker and Hume Cronyn as J. Robert Oppenheimer in a film directed by Norman Taurog responsible for 180 films during his career and produced by Samuel Marx MGM stalwart with a screenplay by Frank Wead from an original story by Robert Considine. The film was made commercially with the blessings of the United States government President Truman reportedly suggested the film's title as well as the input of Robert Oppenheimer who found the script lacking in authenticity.

The present advertising piece was produced some years after the initial release date of the film during the Korean War and appears to be addressed primarily to distributors of the film in Japan. It asks the distributors to do their best to promote press interest in the film and to seek tie-ins with books about atomic weapons. Rather surprisingly given the film's largely uncritical presentation of the bombing of Hiroshima the text includes the words "in the midst of the Korean War this film should be a force for inspiring Japanese citizens' wish for peace.†The pamphlet goes on to suggest advertising slogans for the film such as: "The whole historical account of events leading up to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima from an American perspective†and "A must-see movie for all Japanese people. In the face of this shock and emotion you must strengthen a new commitment to peace!" A fascinating document of its time and place. Though the film's reception in the English-speaking world was lukewarm it is difficult to imagine the reception of such a film in war-torn and still-occupied Japan. ‎Gibson, A F [and] Charles Ellerbrock [Sheet Music, Civil War, Maryland, Confederate]‎

‎There is Life in the Old Land Yet and Southern Cross along with 30 other pieces of sheet music‎

‎Baltimore: Various publishers 1860. Cloth over boards. Folio. Various original paginations. Original pieces of sheet music gathered and bound in 20th century cloth over boards with a leather spine label titled in gilt. Mild scattered foxing inside. Near fine overall. Some illustrated title pages. This is a bound volume of individual pieces of sheet music mostly published in Baltimore in the 1860s. Most appear to be popular songs of the day but two are rare and decidedly pro-Southern songs printed in Baltimore early in the Civil War.

A. F. Gibson composed and dedicated "There is Life in the Old Land Yet" to Severn Teackle Wallis. Wallis was a prominent Baltimore lawyer and member of the Maryland legislature who was then imprisoned at Ft. McHenry along with other Maryland officials suspected of disloyalty to the Federal Government.

Gibson's composition was published in 1862 by George Willig of Baltimore and reflects Maryland's then prevalent anger with the Lincoln Administration as expressed in these sample lines:
--------
"Though tyrannous might hath o'erborne the right--
Hath discrowned and despoiled her--and men forget
As they bow the knee that they once were free--
There is life in the Old Land yet."
--------

"The Southern Cross" was composed by Charles Ellerbrock and published in Baltimore in 1861 by Henry McCaffrey. Its lyrics speak of the Civil War as something that might still be avoided but woe to the opponents of the Southern Cross if war does come:
--------
"Defiance to tyrants and death to their minions!
With our front to the field swearing never to yield
Or return like the Spartan in death on our shield!
And the CROSS OF THE SOUTH shall triumphantly wave
As the flag of the free or the pall of the brave."
--------

An interesting group of sheet music with these two rare pieces at the end. OCLC locates only 3 copies of each none of which are in Maryland. Various publishers unknown‎
