[Mexican - Americana, California - Civil War - California Native Cavalry]
Muster Roll for Company B of the First Battalion Native Cavalry California Volunteers "Californio Lancers" - Aug. 31 1865
Camp Low 1865. Original partially printed document 26cm x 77cm. Printed on both sides of the sheet completed in manuscript. Darkening at folds from old tape repairs; partial splits to folds and extremities; complete and quite Good. Docketed verso signed in ink by Lieutenant Morgan Owen. Lists twelve enlisted soldiers most with Spanish surnames two with French surnames. Fine. The formation of the California Native Cavalry in 1863 marked a significant chapter in the state's history. Comprising primarily Mexican-American individuals colloquially referred to as "native" Californians the California Native Cavalry unit was formed 1863. Initially commanded by Maj. Andreas Pico a distinguished hero from the Mexican-American War and later under Salvador Vallejo the regiment drew its ranks from diverse backgrounds. Recruitment efforts began with vaqueros from southern California expanding to include individuals from San José and San Francisco. The unit boasted a varied composition encompassing not only Mexican-Americans but also Chilenos California and Yaqui Indians and even French legionnaires.
Company "B" a contingent largely recruited from the northern part of the state is reflected in the existing muster roll. The company assembled at Camp Low near San Juan Bautista in 1865 making a striking entrance into the town. Described as "gay and gallant Spanish lancaroes" the cavalrymen presented a formidable sight with lances in hand and flags flying leaving a lasting impression on the townspeople who had never before encountered soldiers."The gay and gallant Spanish lancaroes sic came dashing through the town with the lances in their hand a flag flying from each of them. I assure you that they presented a war like appearance the people here had never seen a soldier in their lives – Yes Sir!." letter Maj. Michael O'Brien to Gov. Frederick Low January 1865; quoted in Prezelski "Lives of the Californio Lancers: the First Battalion of Native California Cavalry" in Journal of Arizona History v.40 no.1 Spring 1999.
Under the command of Capt. Porfirio Jimeno Company B swiftly engaged in a critical mission: dismantling the notorious Mason-Henry Gang that had terrorized the San Juan region in the preceding months. Despite successfully wounding John Mason in early April 1865 the gang persisted for another month until Mason met his demise at the hands of a miner he sought to kidnap.
However Company B faced challenges including low morale and a high rate of desertions with over 40 men leaving the company in 1865 alone. Transferred to Tubac Arizona Territory to confront the Apaches the company encountered further desertions along the way. The muster roll listing only twelve soldiers alongside Capt. Porfirio Jimeno reflects this tumultuous period. Overall the muster roll provides scarce documentation of the role of Mexican-Americans in the Civil War with few other examples in the trade or institutionally. unknown

[Civil War] Davis, J C Bancroft
Mr. Sumner the Alabama Claims and their Settlement. A Letter to the "New York Herald.
New York: Douglas Taylor Printer 1878. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 20 pp. Reprinted from the New York Herald January 4 1878. As issued stitched in printed wrappers untrimmed. Minor toning to the wrappers and one small chip to the top of the front cover otherwise clean; some wear to the spine.

An interesting statement relating to the Mr. Sumner's role and opinions related to the resolution of the Alabama claims the settlement between the United States and Great Britain over the English involvement on behalf of the Confederacy and the extent to which it prolonged the Civil War. Bancroft served on the joint high commission negotiating with Great Britain. Admitting that at the time of his writing this issue was "no longer connected with the politics of the day but has passed into history" p. 3 he nevertheless lays out some careful argument against some of Sumner's positions and claims related. And interesting and careful argument by the jurist diplomat and politician. Uncommon in commerce. Douglas Taylor, Printer unknown

Egan, Thomas W [Civil War General]
ALS to Edwards Pierrepoint seeking help to get him released from Ward's Island Insane Asylum
New York 1885. Manuscript. Very good condition. A Civil War example of severe PTSD. The Northern general and war hero Brevet Major General Thomas Egan was severely wounded four times during the war. His marriage broke down his only child was taken by his ex-wife to England and he degenerated into alcoholism. After being arrested for public intoxication in early July 1884 he was sentenced to Ward's Island Insane Asylum. This letter is his appeal to Pierrepont to secure his release. The return address is "Wards Island Insane Asylum Hospital Ward 2" which is heartbreaking.

Egan's argument in the letter refers to Dr. Alex E. Macdonald sic 'the person that pronunced Guiteau sain sic that murdered President Garfield .not legible that Mr. H was insain won't you for the Lords sake see Mayor Grace or the commission and have me discharged shurley sic I deserve better of my country a record second to no soldier on Earth which Genl Grant will certify." Dr. Alex Macdonald was a prominent American physician and psychologist. In 1885 he was a resident physican at the New York City Asylum for the Insane on Ward's Island and would become superintendent the next year. Mr. H may refer to Allan McHale Hamilton who was an expert witness regarding Guiteau Garfield's assassin and pronounced him sane.

Dr. R. Gregory Lande fittingly noted “The bullets and bombs stopped in 1865 but the social shock waves were just beginning.†As General Egan demonstrated many disabled veterans endured decades of poverty chronic pain and emotional distress long after the guns fell silent. “Down Fame’s Ladderâ€: Brigadier General Thomas W. Egan’s Unending War" by Frank Jastrzembski Posted on July 29 2019.

Pierrepont 1817-1892 was an American attorney reformer jurist traveler New York U.S. Attorney U.S. Attorney General U.S. Minister to England and orator.1 Having graduated from Yale in 1837 Pierrepont studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840. [World War II – Philippines – Jesuits – POWs] Unknown Author
Letter Home from an American Missionary in the Philippines Describing the Japanese Takeover of Manila and His Subsequent Experience as a POW
Philippines 1945. Single letter; five 8.5 x 11†pages. Pinhole at top of first page missing final pages overall fine. The unknown author of this letter was an American Jesuit missionary in the Philippines who before the war was a novice living in Novaliches just outside Manila. He apparently had not written a significant letter home for a long time: in this letter written in April of what is likely 1945 he recounts his experiences from between December 8 1941 and early January of 1945 shortly before the civilian POW camp in which he was interned was liberated.

After the “Nips†bomb Pearl Harbor “A feverish month ensuedâ€:

“We proceeded to put the Community on ‘war-time alert’ with all hands occupied in digging air-raid trenches camouflaging our fortress-like house with a garlanded roof and mud-daubed walls; grain supplies were rushed in against the hour of need. We felt that all it might take Uncle Sam all of six months to put an end to the efforts of the pretender.â€
Around Christmas they evacuated to the Jesuit Ateneo Grade School then in Intramuros as the Japanese were advancing quickly towards Novaliches. Of course this did not prove to be much safer:

“When darkness came the Japs began their bombing of the Port Area. The bombs began to bounce off the pavement; bombers just skimming our roof-top on their way. We spent the night on our tummies and how we prayed. We thought that each decade of the beads would be our last this side of Purgatory. . When the church sto Domingo was hit the floor beneath us did some tricks and we were lifted up a bit and let down amidst the dust and smoke that poured in from above.â€

The missionaries try to “salvage important papers and other valuables from the Mission House prior to abandoning it to the fire which threatened the entire Walled City.†During this time they and “a thousand refugees†live in the Ateneo while “Dawn and night raids were supplied by the Japs with nary an American plane to say to them no†– American forces had taken a serious hit and withdrawn outside Manila. It was declared an open city before “the little scrawny but arrogant Japs came into the city and took over†in January of 1942.

The missionaries persuade the Japanese to let them stay in the Ateneo:

“We convinced them that it was impossible for us to give up the building because it belonged to the Pope and the Vatican State would hold us responsible. This argument with many ingenious trimmings enabled us to hold on to the Ateneo until June ‘43 when the main building was taken for a military hospitalâ€.

The author describes how despite what he calls his “partial internment†in Manila he is able to get around checkpoints by pretending to be Belgian. He finishes his studies and begins work at a Belgian convent in Paranaque in February of 1943 living between there and Manila:

“Incidentally none of this would have been possible if the Japs had gumption enough to find out that I was one of the hated Americans. . All vehicles were obliged to stop here a checkpoint at Baclaran and all passengers get down and file between a Jap sentry and a Filipino constabulary soldier to be searched for hidden arms etc. Since several Belgian Fathers not considered enemy aliens frequently passed this way I was able to walk through unmolested as an unoffending Belgian. . I carefully kept my helmet covering the tell-tale red arm-band which was worn on the arm furtherest away from the Jap. The Filipino would do no more than give me a knowing grin.â€

On July 10 1944 all of the American civilian POWs are taken to internment camps in Santo Tomas and then Los Baños. In Los Baños the POWs cut wood repair roads and farm. Los Baños would be liberated in February of 1945; the author paints a slightly confusing picture of the leadup to this:

“Conditions generally ‘worsened’ when on Jan. 8th about the time that the American troops landed at Mindero an island just across from Batangas the Japs got jittery believing that the Yanks were going to do the obvious and cross over the bay to Batangas and they the Japs at Batanga decamped! ‘You are free but remain in camp until the Americans come. Outside your camp Japanese troops will shoot any who leave.’ Great was the joy in Mudville. From nowhere came flag poles on which we quickly unfurled American and British flags .; a short-wave radio was set up and we enjoyed daily Frisco broadcasts .â€

It sounds as if the missionary was reporting contrary to the usual narrative of the Los Baños raid that the Japanese had essentially given up control of the camp and were like the prisoners simply waiting for the Americans to come get their people. Perhaps something further happened in the nearly two intervening months; however the remainder of the letter is missing.

Of interest to scholars of modern Jesuit history and of the civilian POW experience during the Second World War. unknown
