Various locations in and around Seoul South Korea 1952. 22 leaves illustrated with seventy-three black-and-white photographs in mounting corners. Oblong quarto. Contemporary black lacquered gutta percha covers illustrated in Korean style string tied. Minor wear. Very good. A unique peek into Army life in 1952 memorializing the experiences of African-American soldiers during the Korean War. The photographs are uncaptioned but provide a vivid picture of camp life during the conflict. Here the soldiers pose alone and in groups both inside and outside military tents and other structures in both sunny and snowy conditions engaged in lifting weights driving a tank working around the base general carousing and other activities. One image captures an African-American soldier standing outside the Seoul City Hospital likely indicating the soldiers were based near the city. In addition to the American servicemen the album includes several images featuring Korean women with a couple of images capturing a pair of women singing and dancing onstage for the troops. A few other images picture simple portraits of Korean women including one image showing a young Korean woman posed with one of the soldiers. The album also features a handful of shots of the Korean countryside with one image picturing a nearby village. Original albums featuring Black soldiers in the Korean War are rarely encountered in the present market. unknown

The binding is rubbed and bumped. The spine is browned and shows heavier rubbing. Rear inner hinge is cracking. Text block is a bit toned but is sound and generally clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf "For My Beloved Friend and Grand Commander V. D. U.C.V. / Captain William C. Whittle C.S.A. one of the noblest Southern heroes of the High Seas and purest gentlemen of Virginia's Homes / From the Author". Note: Signed as "The Author" and without using Stewart's name; the book is NOT signed by Whittle. William H. Stewart 1838-1912 enlisted as a Captain in the C.S.A. in Norfolk Virginia in 1861 and was part of the Jackson Greys. He was wounded at Chancellorsville 1863 Spotsylvania Court House 1864; and Cold Harbor 1864. He was with the 61st Virginia Infantry when he was surrendered at Appomattox on April 9 1865. William Conway Whittle II 1840-1920 a native of Norfolk Virginia was an officer with the Confederate States Navy. He served on the river near Yorktown as well as on several Confederate naval vessels including the C.S.S. Nashville as 3rd Lieutenant and the C.S.S. Louisiana an Ironclad sailing on the lower Mississippi. The Louisiana was lost in battle with Federal forces near New Orleans and Whittle was captured and taken to Boston as a prisoner. He was exchanged in August 1862 and returned to service taking command of the gunboat CSS Chattahoochie as 1st Lieutenant. He was later chosen to run blockades to get correspondence to Confederate commissioners in Europe. In spring of 1864 he was in Paris with other Confederate officers. His last service was on the infamous C.S.S. Shenandoah which he joined in October 1864 as an Executive Officer. He was onboard the Shenandoah as the ship made its way across the northern Pacific in 1865 attacking American whaling vessels and sinking 29 ships in 12 weeks not knowing that the Civil War had ended. In fact the last shot of the Civil War was fired from the Shenandoah. The ship surrendered at Liverpool on November 6 1865. Whittle and others made their way to Argentina and a couple years later he returned to his home in Norfolk where he went to work with the Old Bay Line as a Captain. The United Confederate Veterans UCV was formed in 1889 and Whittle was a member. Stewart's inscription to him as "Grand Commander V.D. U.C.V." likely suggests that he was Grand Commander of the Virginia District. He should not be confused with his father also William Conway Whittle 1806-1878 who was also a Captain in the Confederate Navy but who died before the U.C.V. was formed. <br/> <br/> The Neale Publishing Company hardcover

The binding is worn and stained. There is damping at the lower left corner of the front cover as well as a bit near the bottom edge of the rear cover. This does not seem to affect the interior of the book although the endpapers are browned. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. Text is a bit toned but is clean. INSCRIBED by the author on the front flyleaf "To my valued Friend Mr. S. A. Manuel / From the Author / Isaac R. Sherwood of Ohio". There is also a pencil inscription on the front pastedown "George W. Thomas / Through courtesy Dr. Manual". Isaac Ruth Sherwood 1835-1925 was born in New York but mostly lived in Ohio and was a newspaper editor and politician. At the outset of the Civil War he joined the 14th Ohio Infantry and then the 111th Ohio Infantry and was active in the Carolinas Campaign. Towards the end of the war he was made brevet brigadier general following actions at the Battle of Franklin. After the war he moved to Toledo Ohio became editor of the "Toledo Daily Commercial and entered politics with the Republican party. In 1870 he was Secretary of State for Ohio. In 1879 he joined the Democratic Party and remained there for the rest of his life. <br/> <br/> The H. J. Chittenden Co., hardcover

String-tied printed wrappers housed in a quarter cloth and boards binder 27 pp. This is House Document No. 63 33rd Congress 2nd Session February 8 1855. Correspondence is provided relating to an engagement that took place near Fort Laramie on the 19th of August 1854 between a detachment of United States troops and Sioux Indians. On August 19 1854 east of Fort Laramie Nebraska Territory in present-day Goshen County Wyoming a small detachment of soldiers entered a large Sioux encampment to arrest a man accused of killing a migrant's cow although such matters by treaty were to be handled by the US Indian agent. After one of the soldiers fatally shot Chief Mat ó Wayúhi Conquering Bear the Sichangu Lakotas returned fire and killed 29 soldiers Lieutenant John Grattan and a civilian interpreter. Unclipped dustwrapper original price of 12/- on spine has creasing and tears to edges particularly a 2.5 inch tear at bottom right of spine and a smaller one-inch tear to opposite side also a little bit missing at top end and at bottom right of same. Slight bumping to spine ends of gray boards with decoration on front board showing a soldier and a palm tree. A previous original owner's name on f/ep some yellowing to the pages a small tear to top corner of map on page 86 Frontier to Morogoro where it is fixed to the pages but with no damage to the printing on the map itself and no damage to the two smaller maps on pp124 and 172. Otherwise a good clean tight copy of this first edition of this hard-cover book. Deals with the author's wartime service in the German East Africa campaign from 1915-18.
