There is some beginning rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's gift notation on the half title page. It appears this was a gift for a professor at the University of Illinois from his students who signed their names on the free page after the last page of text. The dust jacket has edge wear rubbing several small tears and nicks. "Hamilton the commander of the Corinth section of Grant's division suggested what would eventually become Grierson's Raid. Subsequently due to Hamilton's insistence on procuring a command that would garner him more glory Hamilton offered his resignation. Grant quickly accepted. In the Western Theater of the American Civil War Confederate cavalry raids under commanders such as Lt. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and Brig. Gen. John Hunt Morgan had harassed Union expeditions namely at the Battle of Parker's Crossroads where Forrest captured three hundred Union soldiers under Brig. Gen. Jeremiah C. Sullivan but lost all of the artillery pieces belonging to his own command. The task of drawing the attention of Confederate raiders away from the Siege of Vicksburg fell to Col. Benjamin Grierson a former music teacher who disliked horses after being kicked in the head by one as a child. There is nicking and tiny tears to the edges of the map and spots of toning especially at the edges and along folds and occasionally throughout the main body of the map. Page measures 44" x 27 3/8".<br/> <br/> This World War I poster is part of a series published by the United War Work Campaign or UWWC a coalition of seven service organizations charged with raising $170000000 to help demobilize the army and maintain morale in the final few years of the war. The campaign was a success and was at the time recognized as the largest fundraising event in history. The War Camp Community Service was one of two secular organizations in the campaign. Their work was largely focused on the social and recreational needs of enlisted men in homefront training camps. This poster promotes New York War Camp Community Service at 49-55 West 27th Street and features artwork of a man in colonial garb welcoming three servicemen to New York City signed "Wag '18". An illustration of a bald eagle holding a banner with the US flag is included alongside the text "Your Uniform is your Pass We Can Tell You What To Do What To See Where To Eat Where To Sleep." Dr. Benjamin Szold Rabbi of the Oheb Shalom Congregation" pages 8-9.<br> Page 11 announces the event and lists the officers board of managers and building committee of the Hebrew Benevolent Society of Baltimore Chebroh Shangare Soshiyo 26 names as well as the Architect and Building and also the President of the US the Governor of Maryland and the Mayor of Baltimore. <br> “After the completion of the ceremony of depositing the box in the corner-stone the following brief remarks on pages 12-17 were addressed to the audience by Dr. Abram Arnold. <br> The exercises closed with a short but very impressive sermon pages 18-23 printed in both English and German by the Rev. Henry Hochheimer Rabbi of the F.P. Heb. Friendship Congregation….<br> Mr. Henry Straus the chairman of the Building Committee introduced to the Assembly the orator of the day the Rev. Dr. Solomon Deutsch Rabbi of the Har Sinai Temple….The admirable address in German of the Doctor…occupies the closing pages pages 24-30 of this pamphlet.â€<br> It is also noted that “Mr. Ignatius Lauer the Secretary of the Baltimore Hebrew Benevolent Society read the inscription on the metal plate and a list of the articles which were deposited in the corner stone….â€<br> In the History of Baltimore City and County Maryland J. Thomas Scharf notes that “The Hebrew Hospital owes its existence to the Hebrew Benevolent Society which in March 1863 appointed a committee to report a plan for the establishment of a hospital. The corner-stone was laid on the 25th of June 1866 marked by this booklet but the ‘Hebrew Hospital and Asylum Association’ was not chartered until Jan. 13 1868 and in May of that year the building corner of Ann and Monument Streets was completed at a cost of sixty-three thousand dollars and opened for the reception of patients. <br> The object of the association is to ‘afford surgical and medical aid comfort and protection in sickness to the suffering and needy and to provide an asylum for the infirm and destitute and for all other purposes appertaining to hospitals asylums and dispensaries.’<br> The average number of inmates is between twenty and twenty-five; the hospital will accommodate thirty-two patients. The income is derived from subscriptions donations bequests etc. The officers are Joseph Friedenwald president from the beginning until the present time; Vice-President B.F. Ulman; Treasurer A.S. Adler; Secretary Ignatius Lauer. The Ladies’ Hebrew Hospital Association which was formed in 1868 was dissolved on the 7th of Maryland 1880. <p>New York January 18 1921. 1921. Fair. - Over 125 words typed on 10-3/4 inch high by 8-3/8 inch wide "The Forum" buff stationery. The journalist and war correspondent Edwin Wildman writes to the American impressario and lecture manager James B. Pond recommending John E. Kellerd "Do you suppose you could use Mr. John E. Kellerd one of the leading exponents of Shakespearian Drama He is a man of character and and ability and is a good public speaker on this topic and upon the American stage ideals etc." He goes on to state that should Pond be interested he'd be "glad to send him over to call on you." Signed in full "Edwin Wildman". Folded vertically and horizontally for mailing the edges of the letter are chipped with a few short tears and pieces out from the right edge. Good.</p><p>The American journalist and diplomat Edwin Wildman 1867-1932 worked as a writer and war correspondent for Leslie's Weekly. He served as Vice and deputy consul general at Hong Kong special war correspondent to the Philippines and for the Hearst papers as Chief Asiatic and special commissioner with allied troops in the war with China from 1900-1901. He later served as president and editor of The Forum Magazine.</p><p>In the role of Hamlet the Shakespearian actor John E. Kellerd 1862-1929 broke the then existing record by a series of 102 consecutive performances in 1912-13.</p><p>The American lecture manager James Burton Pond 1889-1961 was the head of the Pond Lecture Bureau in New York City. He managed lecture tours in the United States by prominent personalities the world over.</p> New York, January 18, 1921.

The first book printed for Jewish survivors by the Va'ad Hatzalah in Germany after the War.<br> The preface notes: "The lack of books of the Nation of the Book in Germany encouraged us to print works necessary for yeshiva students.this is the first book that we successfully.published this valuable Sha'agas Aryeh."<br> Sha'agat Aryeh published for survivors and refugees in Europe; with prefatory printed dedication from Rabbi Nathan Baruch of Vaad Hatzala. <br> Following the end of the Second World War the Vaad's activities centered in Germany and France consisted of distributing funds and shipments of food and religious books to Displaced Persons camps in Germany and newly established yeshivot. It provided spiritual rehabilitation to remnants of Jewish communities destroyed during the Holocaust. <br> Aryeh Leib ben Asher Gunzberg’s 1695-1785 responsa titled Sha’agat Aryeh The Roar of the Lion; first published 1755 “brought him lasting recognition and has been republished at least 40 times since; it is still considered to be an essential text of rabbinic learning.
