George Egerton was a writer of short stories novels plays and translations noted for her psychological probing innovative narrative techniques and outspokenness about women's need for freedom including sexual freedom. Egerton is widely considered to be one of the most important writers in the late nineteenth century New Woman Movement and a key exponent of early modernism in English-language literature. Egerton has been credited with the first mention of Friedrich Nietzsche in English literature she refers to Nietzsche in her first book "Keynotes" in 1893 three years before the first of Nietzsche's works was translated into English. In 1976 Rolling Stone magazine commissioned Eggleston to photograph Plains Georgia birthplace and hometown of presidential candidate Jimmy Carter. The project became the first of Eggleston's books of photographs and the subject of this exhibition of 100 type-c photographs at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D. C. from December 10 1977 to January 22 1978. The photobook published by Caldecot Chubb in New York in an edition of just five numbered copies and two lettered artist's proofs reissued in a trade edition by Steidl in 2017 was not only Eggleston's first but his most elaborate containing one-hundred original prints in two leather-bound volumes housed in a linen box. Eggleston made these photographs in and around Plains—and along the route of his journey there from Memphis—on the eve of the 1976 Presidential election. When he crossed the border into Sumter County he circled Plains warily photographing the outlying countryside and the nearby fields and villages. "His reluctance to zero in too hastily on Carter's hometown was an indication partly of his purpose in making this series of images. He wanted to record Plains in the true context of its life as a Southern town: as a tiny way station on roads leading to other more vital places as the hub of a very small agricultural wheel. "Ma il blues, Aspettando il '68", è la storia di Francesco e Federico - anche se è quest'ultimo a spiccare, per la sua centralità, come protagonista intercettati in un momento cruciale della loro esistenza: la fase di passaggio tra giovinezza ed età adulta, con tutti i suoi interrogativi e criticità. Il cardine attorno a cui si sviluppa la storia è senza dubbio la musica: quella suonata dai protagonisti, sassofonista e chitarrista in una band, i Bluestalkers; quella dei grandi musicisti rock e blues degli anni Sessanta, che ha fornito la giusta "educazione" a Francesco e Federico; le sette note vissute in modo tanto permeante da guidare le scelte e influenzare i legami interpersonali. Un dissidio interiore che si riflette nel rapporto con la società e i suoi canoni. Sempre in attesa, ma allo stesso tempo sempre in ritardo, Federico cerca invano una linea guida che possa indicargli la strada da seguire, che sia la religione, o un credo politico, o l'arte, ma invano; da qui l'idealizzazione del Sessantotto, l'attesa di un momento epifanico che apra a nuove consapevolezze, imprimendo al mondo un corso rivoluzionario.

La Spezia. Porta della speranza
br. Spezia non ha dimenticato i "suoi" ebrei. Ma neanche Israele ha dimenticato la sua Porta di Sion. A testimonianza, un solo piccolo episodio ricordato da don Gianni Botto: "Nel 1996 mi trovavo a Safed con un gruppo di altri spezzini. Mentre stavo facendo acquisti in una botteguccia, il proprietario mi chiese da dove venissi. Quando risposi: 'La Spezia', uscì dalla porta dicendo: 'Sha'ar Tzion, Sha'ar Tzion...' e chiamando a gran voce i vicini. Ne seguirono molte pacche sulle spalle e abbracci di gioia". Si calcola che dall'estate del '45 alla primavera del '48 l'emigrazione clandestina verso la Terra Promessa interessò più di 23.000 ebrei europei e la città della Spezia, con il caso della Fede e della Fenice, ne costituì il fulcro. Un avvenimento che può sembrare uno dei tanti nelle migliaia di episodi che, come accade ancora oggi, hanno portato per secoli masse di disperati in cerca di sopravvivenza da una sponda all'altra del Mediterraneo. Invece, un evento incomparabile nella sua portata storica. Protagonisti 1.014 sopravvissuti alla Shoah, partiti dal Golfo della Spezia l'8 maggio 1946 alla volta della Palestina.

Ali è un ragazzino che trascorre le giornate tirando calci a un pallone con il suo amico Ahmed, in una Kabul devastata dalla lotta tra fazioni, ma non ancora in mano ai talebani. La città non è sempre stata così, gli racconta suo padre: un tempo c'erano cinema, teatri e divertimenti, ma ad Ali, che non ha mai visto altro, la guerra fa comunque meno paura delle sgridate del maestro o dei rimproveri della madre. Il giorno in cui, di ritorno da scuola, Ali trova un mucchio di macerie al posto della sua casa, quella fragile bolla di felicità si spezza per sempre. Convinto inizialmente di aver solo sbagliato strada, si siede su un muretto e aspetta il fratello maggiore Mohammed, a cui tocca il compito di spiegargli che la casa è stata colpita da un razzo e che i genitori sono morti. Non c'è più niente per loro in Afghanistan, nessun futuro e nessun affetto, ma "noi siamo come uccelli (...) e voleremo lontano", gli dice Mohammed, che lo convince a scappare. E in quello stesso istante, l'istante in cui inizia il loro grande viaggio, nascosti in mezzo ai bagagli sul portapacchi di un furgone lanciato verso il Pakistan, Mohammed diventa per Ali un padre, il miglior amico e, infine, un eroe disposto a tutto pur di non venire meno alla promessa fattagli alla partenza: Ali tornerà a essere libero e a guardare le stelle, come faceva da bambino quando il padre gli spiegava le costellazioni sul tetto di casa nelle sere d'estate. Dal Pakistan all'Iran, e poi dall'Iran alla Turchia, alla Grecia e infine all'Italia, quella di Ali e Mohammed è un'epopea tragica, ma anche una storia di coraggio, determinazione e ottimismo.
