Nonostante la prima reazione, di rifiuto tassativo, Goldfarb si ritrova a frugare nelle pieghe di un passato che a lungo ha messo da parte, soffocandolo attraverso una quotidianità che si rivelerà assai fragile. Tornano a galla i ricordi, e con essi i protagonisti di una storia che, pur essendosi svolta in Germania, non è quella di un "normale tedesco". Sebbene Goldfarb non abbia direttamente avuto a che fare con l'Olocausto, le sue tragiche conseguenze ne hanno segnato la crescita e la vita adulta, portandolo a vivere un'esistenza di emarginato in casa propria. Non esiste individuo al mondo che, nel corso della sua vita, non abbia desiderato essere "altro" o "altrove" e abbia pensato, almeno una volta, a cosa gli sarebbe successo se gli avvenimenti accaduti avessero preso un'altra direzione, se fosse riuscito a trovare il coraggio di barattare la sicurezza del conosciuto con l'incerto. La protagonista, Laura, una donna di 52 anni, con un passato imponente alle spalle, ad un certo punto, stremata dagli innumerevoli tentativi di ricucire ferite, raccattare cocci e ricomporre invano la propria esistenza, realizza di essere arrivata ad uno stallo e fa una cosa nuova per lei, prova a cambiare registro alla propria vita, abbandona e parte affrontando il nuovo scenario che sta ridisegnando. I momenti vissuti in treno (ipotetico o reale, ad ognuno il suo) la incalzano in un gioco di immedesimazione, a tratti anche un po' ossessiva. Ricompone i puzzle delle vite di alcuni compagni di viaggio che, attraverso le proprie esperienze, o le parvenze di ciò che potrebbero rappresentare, riescono a rendere palesi emozioni, sentimenti, opinioni ed anche ricordi che la protagonista pareva avesse abbandonato nel dimenticatoio della mente. Con un viaggio introspettivo, dunque, in questo romanzo cerca di attraversare le probabili fasi che disegnano la vita di ciascuno di noi, riconoscendosi anch'essa in quell'altro e altrove ricercati nel tempo.
