La prova del fuoco
br. Ernst Weiss ci introduce nel suo "poliziesco dell'anima", come il protagonista stesso definisce questo romanzo. Fin dalle prime righe della "Prova del fuoco" il protagonista, che è anche voce autoriale della narrazione, introduce al lettore la materia di cui si parlerà (realtà, non sogno), fornisce le coordinate spazio temporali in cui si apre la vicenda e ne indica il protagonista, "un uomo", una persona, chiunque, il lettore stesso, che è subito dopo chiamato in causa, invitato a immedesimarsi, a comprendere quel che il protagonista stesso non comprende, ad avvertirlo sulla propria pelle. Perché quest'uomo può essere ciascuno di noi, come Gregor Samsa, il protagonista della "Metamorfosi" di Kafka, che un mattino qualunque si sveglia in forma di enorme scarafaggio. Proprio come uno scarafaggio, l'anonimo protagonista della "Prova del fuoco" si trova costretto a passare strisciando sotto delle pareti in lamiera di una latrina, poi a camminare tra i rifiuti e gli scarti di una piazza del mercato, mentre qualcuno o qualcosa lo punisce, ponendolo nel centro di un tribunale invisibile, in balia di leggi imperscrutabili, trascinandolo davanti a un giudice senza volto, cui deve rendere conto di una colpa di cui non ricorda circostanze e motivazioni. Ma per un curioso scherzo del destino, a ostacolare Olga non sarà la resistenza oppostagli da Mizzi, bensì l'inaspettata condotta dell'amato, ombra ormai consunta di quello che un tempo era il proprietario della casa N. 37. "Comedie humaine" moderna di uno degli autori più talentuosi dell'intera generazione espressionista tedesca, è un romanzo incentrato su una vicenda criminale, descritta con suggestivo rigore e clinica precisione. Senza cedere mai alla tentazione del compromesso psicologico o alla scappatoia sentimentale, Weiss si tiene saldamente ancorato al meccanismo implacabile di una fiaba nera, che ha per protagonista un'umanità abietta e irredimibile.
