GERRY, Margarita Spalding (1870 - 1939)
Hand-Edited Story and Two Typed Letters Signed
Washington 1907. unbound. American author editor and compiler of historical fiction and factual reminiscences. She had a long association with Harper's Monthly Magazine and published two books about Abraham Lincoln with Harper and Brothers: "The Toy-Shop" a romantic story of the president's quest to recapture his youth and "Body-guard to the President" the recollections of Col. William H. Crook. In 1907 Harper's Monthly Magazine published "The Toy -Shop" originally a 15-page story about Abraham Lincoln. The response was so great that Harper's suggested that Gerry write a full-length book. We offer the original 15-page signed printed story of "The Toy-Shop" that appeared in Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1907 in which Margarita Gerry has made extensive handwritten corrections deletions sentence changes added writings etc. which has altered the published version to the point of it becoming an entirely new manuscript unpublished. It is quite possible that she used this extensively-corrected and altered manuscript as a guideline for the book project which resulted from the original short story. Her editing covers almost every single printed line in red ink. Also included: two typed letters signed each 1 page on personal stationery Washington D.C. no date but docketed 1907 both dealing with her difficulties in parting with a photograph of herself that a publisher needs for reproduction "Please return this picture.it is the only one I have.so I really couldn't bear to give it up." Both letters are trimmed; all items are in good condition.

unknown

[A 1945 Defense of German Anti-Antifascists] Hocking, William Ernest, Intro
THEY FOUGHT HITLER FIRST: A REPORT ON THE TREATMENT OF GERMAN ANTI-NAZIS IN CONCENTRATION CAMPS FROM 1933 TO 1939 BASED ON CONTEMPORARY RECORDS
New York: American Association for a Democratic Germany 1945. Paper Wrappers. Illustrated by Picture Cover. 1st edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers 8vo 15 1 pages. Wolff I #181.
American labor publication preaching an internationalist position on War crimes--punish the German Fascists not the Germans. A good example of the pre-Nuremberg debates in the US and elsewhere about how to deal with nazi war crimes.
Booklet includes a brief timeline of concentration camps in Germany from their beginnings in 1933 until the beginning of the war in 1939 based on period reports.
William Ernest Hocking 1873-1966 was an American idealist philosopher at Harvard University. He continued the work of his philosophical teacher Josiah Royce the founder of American idealism in revising idealism to integrate and fit into empiricism naturalism and pragmatism. He said that metaphysics has to make inductions from experience: "That which does not work is not true." His 22 books included works on philosophy and human rights freedom of the press and human nature.
Here he argues that we owe something to those Germans who fought against the inevitable until a million and a quarter had been in the Nazi concentration camps 15 per cent of whom were Jews and 85 per cent non-Jews while we of the Western powers smiled on and appeased their prosecutors.
The American Association for a Democratic Germany included among its officers: Reinhoild Nieburh and Dorothy Thompson as Vice-Chairmen and William Ernest Hocking Charles LaFollette Kenesaw Mountain Landis III and Victor Reuther among the members of the National Committee.
From its Statement of Purpose its stated aim was "To Foster the development of genuine democracy in Germany. Only if the common people of Germany get help in establishing democratic ways and educating their children to democratic living can Germany be a healthy peaceful state and can Europe and the world be safe. Democracy is possible in Germany. Seek out the proven democrats. They will come from the concentration camps and prisons where Hitler had to chain them."
SUBJECTS: Nazi concentration camps -- Germany. (Karsh, Yousuf). De Gasperi, Alcide (1881-1954). Prime Minister of Italy from 1945 to 1953,
ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH of the ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER ALCIDE DE GASPERI by YOUSUF KARSH SIGNED by DE GASPERI with a letter signed by his secretary probably Francesco Bartolotta.

Rome 1950. 1950. Fair. - An original 10-3/4 inch high by 7-1/4 inch wide black & white gelatin silver photograph portrait of the Italian Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi by the great portrait photographer Yousef Karsh. The portrait depicts the bespectacled Italian Prime Minister from the shoulders up. De Gasperi wearing round clear framed glasses is attired in a black suit over white shirt and tie. Karsh's facsimile signature is printed in white at lower right within the image. The photograph is signed in ink by Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi in the bottom margin. The signature is very faint possibly owing to the glossy surface and the color of the ink. The portrait in identified in ink at bottom left in an unidentified hand. The borders are soiled and the photograph is crudely taped into the original buff mailing envelope of the "Secretaria Particolare del Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri". The photo is lightly stained with minor creasing. A typed letter signed by the Prime Minister's secretary most probably Francesco Bartolotta conveys the signed photo. The letter is taped to the facing panel of the envelope. Addressed to Dr. Clarence R. Rungee at the Museum of People and Places in New Haven Bartoletta writes "L'On. De Gasperi ha aderito ben volentieri alla Sua richiesta e sono lieto di poterLe inviare l'unita fotografia con firma autografa del Presidente." The letter is stained & creased. The large buff mailing envelope is stained & torn with numerous postmarks and cancelled postage stamps.

The Italian politician and statesman Alcide De Gasperi 1881-1954 founded the Christian Democracy Party. He served as Prime Minister of Italy from 1945 to 1953. De Gaspari has the distinction of being the last Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy under kings Victor Emmanuel III and Umberto II as well as being the first Prime Minister of the Italian Republic after the people voted to end the monarchy.

Francesco Bartolotta was the President's "Segreteria particolare" from 1945 to 1951.
Rome, (1950).

Agence France Presse; AFP.; Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 30, 1882 - April 12, 1945 ) A. F.
Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt rides in a sleigh with his daughter Anna Roosevelt and her second husband Clarence John Boettiger. 1935 .Original photograph.
Hyde Park NY: 24 February 1935. Silver print. French text on separate sheet pasted to verso. Photographer's stamp verso. 18 x 13 cm. Anna Roosevelt Halsted was one of the most understated accomplished women of the 20th century. Co-editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer owner of the Arizona Times children’s book author one of the most trusted advisors of her father President Franklin D. Roosevelt and champion of humanitarian works Anna lived a remarkable life.Perhaps it was her parents unhappiness that was a factor in Anna being married three times. Her first marriage was to Curtis Bean Dall a New York stockbroker – they married in 1926 and divorced in 1934 sharing two children together. Anna moved into the White House with her children after this first divorce. Anna’s second marriage was to Clarence John Boettiger a journalist who she met while aiding her father’s second run for the presidency. They shared one son but divorced in 1948 – Clarence committed suicide in 1950 by jumping out of his hotel room window. Her last husband was Dr. James Halsted and the pair remained wedded until Anna’s death in 1975. Hyde Park, NY: 24 February, 1935 unknown
