Boardman Michael Robinson 1876-1952 Was A Canadian-American Painter Illustrator And Cartoonist. Robinson First Studied Art At The Massachusetts College Of Art In Boston. He Would Later Go On To Study At The Académie Colarossi And The École Des Beaux-Arts Both In Paris Where He Was Influenced By The Political Cartooning Of Honoré Daumier As Well As Forain And Steinlen. Upon Returning To The United States Robinson Worked As An Illustrator Drawing Cartoons And Theater Illustrations For The New York Morning Telegraph. He Freelanced For A Wide Range Of Other Popular Publications Including Pearson's Magazine Scribner's Magazine Collier's Harper's Weekly And Others. In 1910 Robinson Took A Job On The Staff Of The New York Tribune Drawing Editorial Cartoons A Position Which He Retained For Four Years. With The Eruption Of World War I In 1914 Robinson's Increasingly Radical Anti-Militarist Political Views Brought Him Into Conflict With His Employer And He Quit The Publication. In 1915 Robinson Travelled To Eastern Europe On Behalf Of Metropolitan Magazine Along With Journalist John Reed. The Pair Saw First Hand The Effects Of The European War In Russia Serbia Macedonia And Greece. In 1916 Reed's Account Of The Journey Was Collected In A Book Called The War In Eastern Europe To Which Robinson Contributed Illustrations. On His Return From Europe Robinson Worked At The Socialist Monthly The Masses. His Highly Political Cartoons As Well As The General Anti-War Stance Of The Masses Was Deemed To Have Violated The Recently Passed Espionage Act Of 1917 And The Masses Had To Cease Publication. Robinson Along With The Other Defendants Were Acquitted On October 5 1918. Following The Masses Robinson Became A Contributing Editor To The Liberator And The New Masses Working With Former Masses Editor Max Eastman. Robinson Would Later Go On To Teach Art At The Art Students League In New York City 1919-30 And Head The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center 1936-47. Some Of His Students Include Duard Marshall James Brooks Bill Tytla Edmund Duffy Jacob Burck Russel Wright Eric Bransby Rifka Angel Mary Anne Bransby Gerhard Bakker And Esther Shemitz Who Married Whittaker Chambers: Both Burck And Shemitz Contributed Illustrations To The New Masses As Did Their Mentor. Robinson Is Also Known As A Muralist. Some Of His Mural Commissions Include Works At Rockefeller Center And The Department Of Justice Building In Washington D.C. And A Nine-Panel Mural On The History Of Trade For Kaufmann's Flagship Department Store In Pittsburgh Completed In 1929. Printed in an edition of 250 copies from the prospectus which is not included. A fascinating Australian artist's book from the 1980s. An interesting aspect to this book is that the original purchase price was means tested according to the income of the purchaser. Long-term unemployed and pensioners paid $40 for a copy those with an income of less than $20000 paid $80 and those with an income above $30000 paid $150. Deluxe copies are fully bound in blue suede with silver blocking and page edging and additionally include three signed and numbered prints of Elvis Presley The Everly Brothers and Bobby Darin. Presented in an archival custom-designed case. A fine unread copy lacking outer bag. 'Elvis & the Birth of Rock celebrates the extraordinary era when rock and roll tour buses travelled the States often presenting several legendary performers in a single billing as documented in the stunning photographs of Lew Allen and the words of Mike McCartney. 1956 was a defining year for Elvis Presley as he rocketed from regional celebrity to national icon. In January his first Number One hit 'Heartbreak Hotel' was followed by his first album topping the charts in March. On November 23rd a 17-year-old photography enthusiast was invited to shoot Elvis Presley at the Cleveland Arena for his high school newspaper. A labour strike at the three major newspapers in Cleveland meant that Lew Allen was the only photographer at the show. Interspersed among the photographs of Elvis are images from two shows in Rochester New York in 1958 both part of popular music bus tours throughout the States which included several now-legendary acts such as Buddy Holly The Everly Brothers Bobby Darin Frankie Avalon and many more. It was Bob Shatten Lew Allen's nephew who began the task of assembling the work for publication in 1988 when Lew dug out some old contact sheets that had been gathering dust in his basement for decades. That work was continued by Mike McCartney who brought the previously unseen collection to the attention of Genesis Publications. Nel 1964 espone a New York e due anni più tardi è invitato con un gruppo di opere alla <strong>Biennale di Venezia</strong> dove nel 1984 è presente con una sala personale. Tra il 1998 e il 2001 tra vecchio e nuovo millennio esegue le tre grandi porte di bronzo per la basilica patavina di Santa Giustina per cui realizza anche diciotto ritratti e quattro simboli in marmo degli evangelisti inseriti nelle nicchie delle facciate. Nel 1977 espone alla <strong>Jackson Iolas Gallery di New York</strong> e l'anno successivo nell'ambito del Festival dei due Mondi di Spoleto a Charleston negli USA.
