The garden at Highgrove The setting -- The view from the house -- The cottage garden -- Wild flower meadow and woodland garden -- The arboretum and walled garden - Organic gardening at Highgrove. High Grove
New York : St. Martin's Press 2000 2000. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 176 pages : color illustrations ; 29 cm ; ISBN: 031227551X; 9780312275518; 9781841881423 LCCN: 2002-281759 ; LC: SB466.G8; Dewey: 712/.6/094241 ; OCLC: 46401271 ; purple cloth in color photographic dustjacket ; Contents: The setting -- The view from the house -- The cottage garden -- Wild flower meadow and woodland garden -- The arboretum and walled garden - Organic gardening at Highgrove. ; "When the marriage of Lady Di and Prince Charles fell apart rumor had it part of the problem had to do with his gardening obsession. Gossip columns claimed Charles paid more attention to his gardens than his wife. The Garden at Highgrove takes readers on a tour of Charles`s favorite creation--a maze-like garden surrounding the estate where he has primarily lived for the past 20 years. Various styles thrive within the boundaries of the property: wildflower meadows formal hedgerows outdoor rooms carefully plotted tapestries of Queen of Night tulips. If Diana complained of neglect Highgrove`s landscape looks like it has been lavishly doted on. In one series of photos we see the transformation of a large plot viewed from the house as it has been completely erased and re-created year to year. Who has time to complete and then entirely redo a garden on a regular basis A prince of course. Although the landscape glows with a vibrant almost artificial green Charles has long been a committed organic gardener. In the introduction he recalls the period when he came around to the cause of environmentalism. While driving through a declining English countryside in the 1960s and 1970s "I remember longing to heal the countryside to bind up its wounds and to reclothe it in its rightful form." The Garden at Highgrove will inspire gardeners even those who don`t live in palaces who are looking for images of elegance and can`t afford a staff to keep the hedges perfect. --Emily White" ; Candida Rose Lycett Green was a British author who wrote sixteen books including English Cottages Goodbye London The Perfect English House Over the Hills and Far Away and The Dangerous Edge of Things. Her television documentaries included The Englishwoman and the Horse and The Front Garden. Unwrecked England based on a regular column of the same name she wrote for The Oldie since 1992 was published in 2009. ; FINE/FINE

New York : St. Martin's Press, 2000 hardcover

Schmidgall, Gary, 1945-
The stranger Wilde : interpreting Oscar
New York : Dutton 1994 1994. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1st edition 1st printing ; xviii 494 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm ; ISBN: 0525937633; 9780525937630; 0452271576; 9780452271579; National Library: 014851640 LCCN: 93-39638 ; OCLC: 29184646 ; "A William Abrahams book."/ Includes bibliographical references pages 475-478 and index ; "Though Oscar Wilde's legendary life and his extraordinary art are both intimately and unmistakably linked to his homosexuality no Wilde biographer has ever really explored the full implications of his gay identity - until now. Gary Schmidgall's is a true post-Stonewall performance the first book to assert frankly that Wilde's sexual orientation is the key to his literary accomplishments and his enduring appeal. The Stranger Wilde sidesteps standard chronological biography to provide a brilliant portrait drawn from Wilde's own writings and the observations of his contemporaries and later critics set against the backdrop of Victorian convention which was to undo him in the end. Here is Wilde in all his many guises: as flamboyant Oxford undergraduate as aesthete in America as son and brother as husband and father as lover and seducer of young men. Here is the celebrated author of The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray and the outrageous figure who went deliberately defiantly to ruin and imprisonment. Even confirmed Wilde connoisseurs will find this book full of surprises. And for those who know him only as a writer of scathing wit and scandalous appeal this dazzling biography will introduce a complex paradoxical artist of genius whose legend pales beside the provocative and fascinating truth." ; FINE/FINE

New York : Dutton, 1994 hardcover

GERRY, Margarita Spalding (1870 - 1939)
Hand-Edited Story and Two Typed Letters Signed
Washington 1907. unbound. American author editor and compiler of historical fiction and factual reminiscences. She had a long association with Harper's Monthly Magazine and published two books about Abraham Lincoln with Harper and Brothers: "The Toy-Shop" a romantic story of the president's quest to recapture his youth and "Body-guard to the President" the recollections of Col. William H. Crook. In 1907 Harper's Monthly Magazine published "The Toy -Shop" originally a 15-page story about Abraham Lincoln. The response was so great that Harper's suggested that Gerry write a full-length book. We offer the original 15-page signed printed story of "The Toy-Shop" that appeared in Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1907 in which Margarita Gerry has made extensive handwritten corrections deletions sentence changes added writings etc. which has altered the published version to the point of it becoming an entirely new manuscript unpublished. It is quite possible that she used this extensively-corrected and altered manuscript as a guideline for the book project which resulted from the original short story. Her editing covers almost every single printed line in red ink. Also included: two typed letters signed each 1 page on personal stationery Washington D.C. no date but docketed 1907 both dealing with her difficulties in parting with a photograph of herself that a publisher needs for reproduction "Please return this picture.it is the only one I have.so I really couldn't bear to give it up." Both letters are trimmed; all items are in good condition.

unknown
