‎ATWOOD, Margaret (b 1939) and Charles PACHTER (b 1942)‎

‎The Circle Game‎

‎Bloomfield Hills Michigan: Charles Pachter at Cranbrook Academy of Art 1964. 8 folded sheets of handmade paper 18 x 14 1/2 inches. Each with a poem printed on the left hand side and a full-page black and white lithographic illustration on the right hand side. Original tissue guards. Signed and numbered by Charles Pachter on the colophon page. Unbound. Within blue printed paper wrappers handmade by Pachter and an original blind-stamped protective cloth chemise 19 x 15 inches

Limited edition Number 4 of 15 of The Circle Game Margaret Atwood’s early poetry collection with evocative illustrations by Charles Pachter.

The present work is a collaborative project between renowned Canadian author Margaret Atwood and Canadian artist Charles Pachter. The Circle Game explores themes of childhood loss and the passage of time. The series of poems presents an image of children playing a repetitive game symbolizing cycles of life innocence and inevitable change. While the children appear carefree the speaker hints at a deeper awareness of how time alters experience; what was once a simple game will eventually become something different marked by growing awareness and loss. The series of poems also oscillates to the voice of another speaker a lover in bed observing and being observed. In describing the speaker Atwood writes of a "taut curiosity" where a playful quality of childhood is rediscovered in "word-plays calculated ploys of the body the witticisms of touch." In a similar way that Atwood describes the children's repetitive "tranced moving" as lacking joy she inserts distance and anxiety within the intimate space of lovers unsettling the idea of a once idyllic passion. Pachter contributes a series of illustrations which combine literal interpretation and expressive abstraction to depict the haunting anxious qualities that lurk behind Atwood's deceptively simple verse. Accompanying for instance the stanzas in which the speaker describes being stuck under the scrupulous gaze of her lover is an illustration of a round nude female body next to a dark large intrusive face with scrutinizing eyes whose presence dominates the page. Elsewhere the group of children with their faces abstracted are depicted in an ouroboros-like circle surrounding a large black mass performing their joyless play. Atwood's verse and Pachter's illustrations reinforce each other's tensions revealing the unease beneath repetition the scrutiny within closeness and the inevitability of transformation. Together they create a work that is both visually and lyrically haunting inviting readers to reconsider the cycles they inhabit and the ways in which they too are observed and changed.

Lecker and David A2. ‎William Eggleston's Guide‎

‎New York: MIT Press for the Museum of Modern Art 1976. 4to. 110 pp. 48 color photographs and one black-and-white portrait of Eggleston. Original black bonded leather with gilt-stamped spine and cover onlay. A fine copy. FIRST EDITION no date on the title-page; copyright page dated only 1976. Issued as the companion to Eggleston’s seminal 1976 exhibition at MoMA a landmark in the history of photography.

“I once heard William Eggleston say that the nominal subjects of his pictures were no more than a pretext for the making of color photographs–the Degas position. I did not believe him although I can believe that it might be an advantage to think so or to pretend to think so. To me it seems that the pictures reproduced here are about the photographer’s home about his place in both important meanings of that word. One might say about his identity†John Szarkowski pp. 5-6.

“As pictures . these seem to me perfect: irreducible surrogates for the experience they pretend to record visual analogues for the quality of one life collectively a paradigm of a private view a view one would have thought ineffable described here with clarity fulness and elegance†ibid. p. 14. ‎Autograph Zen Drawing Album‎

‎
Leporello bound album; silk covers; inside of covers decorated with gold flitters; in original wooden box inscribed and sealed by Seisetsu Seki.

12 paintings and 12 paired calligraphies. 2 double page calligraphies at beginning and at the end. Each painting with one or more of Seisetsu Seki`s seals. A large number of Seisetsu Seki`s seals were used throughout the album.

A unique masterwork by Seisetsu Seki. I have seen no comparable work by Seisetsu Seki.

Seki Seisetsu 精拙 関 1877 - 1945 was born on 18 January 1877 in Hyogo Prefecture. As a baby he was given to Seki Soshun a Zen priest of Tenrin-ji temple in a nearby village. Soshun raised him and his entire life until his death a few months after the end of WWII Seisetsu remained a Zen monk. When he was 30 he received his inka shômei = formal acknowledgement of a student's completion of his Zen training. In 1922 when he was 45 he became head Kanchô of Tenryû-ji; next to his new duties he also found time for calligraphy and painting.
He was very versatile both as a calligrapher and as a painter. Especially his sense of humour was remarkable. On the other hand Seisetsu became notorious because of his obvious sympathies with the Japanese cause in WWII and because he wanted to integrate bushidô "the way of the warrior" and Zen. He authored a book on this subject.
Just before the fall of Nanking Seisetsu went on national radio to say: "Showing the utmost loyalty to the emperor is identical with engaging in the religious practice of Mahayana Buddhism. This is because Mahayana Buddhism is identical with the law of the sovereign." He then called for the "extermination of the red devils" communists both in Japan and in China. Seisetsu even carried his message to the battlefield visiting the Chinese front in 1938.
Seeing the devastations as a result of the war he preached peace the last few months of his life.
‎

Very good to fine in dust jacket. The photo on the dust jacket cover is almost surreal. The cathedral totally dwarfs the buildings in the town of Beauvais. For US domestic sales only. $55.00 Shelf A

Summary

"Intended by medieval builders to be the greatest of the High Gothic cathedrals Saint-Pierre Beauvais has achieved notoriety among historians because it was indeed the tallest structure of its kind and because it collapsed. This book relates the extraordinary story of the cathedral which despite the collapses of its 150-foot high choir in 1284 and its crossing tower in 1573 has managed to withstand a series of natural and political catastrophes that have ravaged the surrounding town throughout the past seven hundred years. By analyzing both archaeological evidence and historical documents Stephen Murray examines separately the various phases of construction from the eleventh to the sixteenth century to determine the essential architectural quality of each phase and its relationship with the historical context. The author discusses for example how the use of a five-aisled pyramidal basilica reveals the pretensions of the founding bishop Miles of Nanteuil whose exclusive allegiance to the Church aroused bitter opposition from the French king Louis IX and segments of the bourgeoisie. In employing a new understanding of the process of design and construction Murray shows that the Beauvais cathedral was the product not of one single sublime vision but of the conflict arising from several distinct artistic perspectives that may have led to the creation of a basically flawed overall structure"--Publisher description.

Subjects

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre Beauvais France

Architecture Gothic -- France -- Beauvais Oise

Beauvais Oise France -- Buildings structures etc

ISBN: 0691042365 alk. paper
Princeton, N.J. : Princeton University Press, hardcover‎
