‎Dreier, Katherine S; Marcel Duchamp; George Heard Hamilton (Edited by)‎

‎Collection of the Société Anonyme: Museum of Modern Art 1920‎

‎New Haven: Yale University Art Gallery 1950. The Société Anonyme was conceived by and created in 1920 by Katherine S. Dreier Marcel Duchamp and Man Ray all artists committed to "the new movement in art" Modern Art. They assembled a membership of about 170 like minded artists who then assembled a collection by purchase gift or donation of more than 1000 works. The "Museum of Modern Art" in the title is not the museum we know today as MoMA which was established about a decade later. Drier and Duchamp intended the Collection itself as a Museum of Modern Art which would circulate through exhibitions for the education of the public. The catalogue lists 84 such exhibitions; the Collection also loaned works. In 1941 the open Collection was given to Yale University in 1950 the Collection was closed to further acquisitions. The Catalogue was published upon that closing. It represents the full Collection which represents many artists who were or were to become stars and other artists who have found oblivion. The Collection and the Catalogue are rich documents of artistic activity in the first half of the 20th century. Each artist is listed with a full statement by another Societe artist-member and her/his works in the collection. Appendices list Lectures Publications Exhibitions. An Index lists each artist and the writer of the artist's statement. Clean throughout no marks tears or folds; tight binding. The wrappers are faded at the edges especially along the spine. . First Edition. Printed Wrapper softcover. Very Good. 10" x 7 1/2". Collection catalogue. Yale University Art Gallery Paperback‎

‎Sir John Summerson [Sir John Newenham Summerson] (1904-1992), architectural historian, Curator of Sir John Soane's Museum, 1945-‎

‎Sir John Summerson Two Autograph Letters Signed 'Jn Summerson' fm architectural historian John Summerson Curator of John Soane's Museum to Peter Rhodes and his wife Felicity regarding Soane's Piercefield Hall Shotesham Hall and Hay Castle.‎

‎Both on letterheads of Sir John Soane's Museum 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields London. 2 May 1972 and 1 August 1974. Both letters in very good condition and each in a stamped postmarked envelope and each addressed by Summerson to Cuddesdon Manor Oxon. Letter One 2 May 1972: To Peter Rhodes. 2pp. 12mo. He is 'rather surprised' to find that the ruins of Soane's Piercefield House are 'still there!' The best he can do is 'to warn the National Monuments Record of the approaching dissolution'. They are 'seriously overworked but they might have a photographer in the area who would improve on Miss Stroud's snap-shots'. Soane 'used the same design for Piercefield and Shotesham' and 'perhaps it is as well that Soane did duplicate himself on this occasion. Shotesham is in very good order.' Letter Two 1 August 1974: To Felicity Rhodes. 2pp. 12mo. He hopes she is correct in stating that 'Piercefield has been saved': 'I have indeed heard that somebody is considering restoring it but whether he will go ahead I don't know. There is almost nothing left but the facade and that is badly damaged.' Summerson only knows Hay Castle 'by name' and it is 'difficult to do much about the proposed buildings in the grounds and without knowing a lot more about the proposals there is really nothing I can say.' There have been cases where the reasonable development of an estate with small houses has had the effect of saving an old mansion.' Both on letterheads of Sir John Soane's Museum, 13 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London. 2 May 1972 and 1 August 1974. unknown‎
