‎Bad Wildungen Germany: Tac Echelon HQ 12th Army Group 1945. First Edition. Single Sheet Paper. Very Good Plus/4-mil clear mylar envelope. This is an ORIGINAL folded MAP showing the travels of the "Tac Echelon" Headquarters 12th Army Group in WWII through England France Luxenbourg Belgium and Germany from 15 July 1944 through 9 May 1945. On the verso of the map is the description of the "VICTORY IN EUROPE" Dinner Dance presented in honor of General Omar N. Bradley by the Officers of Tac Echelon Headquarters 12th Army Group at the Hotel Furstenhof in Bad Wildungen Germany on 12 May 1945; i.e. 4 days after the Surrender of Germany. The document is SIGNED in ink by General Omar Bradley "O N Bradley". The map measures 11 1/2" x 20" opened and 6 3/4" x 5 1/2" folded.<br /> <br /> One of the MOST REMARKABLE MAPS of WW2 the map was hand-drawn by an artist who signs his name RWD in the print. The document was produced by "Engr. Repro. Det. 12 A Gp." The map shows the various locations of the Headquarters 12th Army Group during its progress in combat in WWII from the "Staging Area" in England to Bad Wildungen Germany. Beverages are described for most of the locations ending in "V-E Specials" for Germany. We believe this map was distributed at the dinner dance celebrating the "Victory in Europe" just 4 days after the War in Europe ended and was signed by General Bradley at the dinner. The 12th Army Group was the largest military formation of the United States in the history of the Country. The 12th Army Group was deactivated shortly afterward on July 12 1945 upon General Bradley’s departure to become Director of the Veterans Administration. <br /> <br /> NOTE: This map will be accompanied by a CERTIFICATE OF PROVENANCE dated and signed by Debbie Chapman Luckinbill certifying that the map was brought home as a souvenir by her aunt the late Helen Chapman who was a member of Red Cross Clubmobile Group C which served in Europe during WW2. Red Cross Clubmobiles were large food trucks which were driven by Red Cross women to troop assembly areas where the women would open up the sides and serve doughnuts coffee and snacks to the fighting men. <br /> <br /> We have not found this map anywhere on the internet or other research. ‎(ca. 47 x 32 cm). 4 S. Original-Zeitung, mittig gefaltet, mit Deckeltitel. (= Göttinger Zeitung: Beilage Kriegshilfsdienst, Weihnachten 1915). Zeitung etwas gebräunt und gerändert, altersentsprechend gut erhalten. Die historische Beilage zur "Göttinger Zeitung" vom Weihnachtsfest 1915 verzeichnet zunächst auf etwa 2,5 Seiten die Spenden aus der Bevölkerung für den Vaterländischen Kriegshilfsdienst. Hier ist dicht geschrieben und genau verzeichnet, wer mit welcher Summe und aus welchem Beruf heraus gespendet hat - aufgeteilt nach den jeweiligen Zahlstellen in Göttingen (Stadtkämmerei, Weinhandlung Bremer, Zigarrenhandlung Krausbauer etc.). Infolge werden kurz die bisherigen Spenden zur "Nationalstiftung für die Hinterbliebenen der im Kriege Gefallenen" aufgelistet (Datum 24.12.1915). Auf der vierten Seite ist ein längerer Text des Kriegshilfsdienstes selbst zu lesen - über aktuelle Vorgänge und Erreichtes sowie zu kommenden Aufgaben, denn der Krieg währte ab Dezember 1915 ja noch weitere zweieinhalb Jahre. Sehr interessant ist eine fast halbseitige Danksagung des Infanterie-Regiments Nr. 82 (die sogenannten "82er") an den Magistrat der Stadt Göttingen für die zum Weihnachtsfest 1915 übersandten Gaben. Hier heißt es: "Göttingen hat uns durch seine Liebesgabentätigkeit neuen Mut und neue Kraft zu neuen Taten gegeben", zuvor bereits ist zu lesen: "Die Stadt Göttingen wolle versichert sein, daß durch die herrlichen Gaben dem Regiment große Freude wiederfahren ist und jeder 82er von dem Gedanken durchdrungen ist, so wie Göttingen hat wohl kaum eine andere Stadt für ihren Truppenteil gesorgt". Most of the Rhine crossings were bombed by the Allies or destroyed by retreating German forces. The first part of this work details the construction of semi-permanent bridges at Arnhem Xanten Rees and Spyck. The second part covers the equally urgent task of making the Rhine a navigable waterway for the transport of supplies: large debris from 23 demolished bridges was cleared with the use of depth charges and other high explosives. Le canon central est Pliant et de forme rectangulaire horizontale (format déplié : 38 cm de haut x 61 cm de large - Format plié : 21,6 cm de large x 38 de haut), les deux autres de forme rectangulaire verticale (format : 24,8 cm de large x 33,4 cm de haut), Le canon central est composé de trois espaces scandé par un décor (décoré à la main) aux guirlandes de fleurs et Anges avec aux pieds des personnages bibliques avec leurs attibuts : MOÏSE et sa Table de la Loi, Saint-MARC assis sur un Lion avec un livre ouvert, Un Aigle avec Saint-JEAN l'évangéliste, Saint-LUC assis sur un Boeuf, Saint-PIERRE tenant ses Clefs à la Main, Saint MATTHIEU et son Ange, Saint-PAUL et son Epée, Saint-LAURENT en habit de Thuriféraire avec son brule-encens etc... avec des Anges dans la partie supérieure. Le canon dit du Dernier Evangile : le texte en latin est encadré à gauche et à droite de 2 Colonnes sculptées avec motif floral en couleurs surmontés chacune d'un Ange tenant une guirlande de feuilles verte au dessus du texte avec une Urne dorée au centre. Le canon dit du Lavabo présente le même type de mise en scène, avec au pied du texte en latin un Livre, une Croix d'or et un Brule-Encens représenté au lieu d'un Agneau Pascal blanc; l'ensemble est trés beau et les couleurs trés fraîches peintes à la main sont resplendissantes, le coin droit du canon central est fortement écorné sans que cela ne touche à aucun moment à la gravure, petites traces de coulures de cire, montrant bien que cet Autel Portatif à servi, sans date (XVIIIème) sans lieu ni nom d'Editeur ( peut être Paris Marcilly, rue saint Jacques n° 21, Imprimeur Editeur),‎

‎LES CANONS D'AUTELS : [Du temps de la messe en latin, dos au peuple, trois tableaux écrits en latin et parfois décorés à la main, étaient disposés sur lautel, lun à gauche comportait le texte du prologue de lEvangile selon Saint Jean, que le prêtre disait à la fin de la messe. Au centre un tableau sur trois colonnes comportait le Gloria, le Credo et les prières de la consécration A droite le troisième contenait les prières de bénédiction de leau et du Lavabo. Souvent, ces canons sont extrêmement décorés, et parfois même à la main] ce sont des Petits panneaux imprimés et colorés à la main, portant certains textes invariables de la messe et utilisés comme aide-mémoire par l'officiant. Les canons sont souvent au nombre de trois, celui du milieu, plus grand que les deux autres, peut être pliant Le canon central est le seul qui concerne le Canon (depuis la fin du Sanctus jusqu'au Pater), les deux autres sont le canon du lavabo (à droite, côté Epître) et le canon du dernier évangile (à gauche, côté Evangile). Ils ne sont plus en usage depuis Vatican II. Cet ensemble complet de canons coloriés, comportant le canon central et les canons du Lavabo et du Dernier évangile, a peut-être été édité par l'imprimeur parisien Marcilly, connu comme le successeur de l'éditeur d'estampes Petit, dont l'activité est attestée de 1755 à 1784. Marcilly a probablement après cette date repris le fonds de papeterie et son activité d'édition d'estampes à son enseigne, rue du Petit-Pont, à l'Image Notre-Dame. Il semble réutiliser ici des modèles issus de planches d'impression beaucoup plus anciennes ....... Mais le fait le plus intéressant est qu'il n'y ait pas comme habituellement le Nom et l'Adresse de l'Editeur, cet ensemble de Canons coloriés ont été trouvés en Vendée et ont pu être utilisé comme CANONS PORTATIFS par les PRÈTRES RÉFRACTAIRES pendant la révolution, AFIN DE POUVOIR FAIRE LA MESSE EN TOUT LIEU, et on peut comprendre que l'Editeur de ces canons colorés ne veuille pas apparaitre ouvertement comme Editeur, car les Révolutionnaires leur aurait fait payer trés cher (de leur vie) comme une prise de position en leur faveur ........ une RARETÉ ...... digne d'une inscription au Patrimoine de France .... en bon état malgré les légers défauts signalés (good condition in spite of the light defect indicated). bon état‎

The source of these items is uncertain but they appear to date from the first decades of the twentieth century. ONE: 'Disposition of Troops in the Canal Defences 15th January 1915.' 4pp. folio. Beginning with: 'G.O.C. Canal Defences. - Major-General A. Wilson. Chief Staff Officer Canal Defences. - Br.-General A. H. Bingley.' The Women's Army Corps evolved from the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps a civilian organization of women working with the United States Army when Congress granted military status to its members in 1943. Forty percent of WAC members were assigned to positions as weather observers radio and control tower operators and aerial photograph analysts. Many other women worked as cryptographers medical technicians and mechanics. ‎The Campaign in Mesopotamia British Army First World War. Duplicated Typescript apparently contemporary of satirical poem by British soldier by ‘A Tommy’ titled ‘Alphabet of Mesopotamia’.‎

‎Without date or place but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. This poem is said to be an earlier work by ‘A Tommy’ the pseudonymous author of the collection ‘If I Goes West’ published in London by Harrap in 1918. WorldCat has no entries to support a second claim: that the present poem was published in 1917 with the subtitle ‘Verses written by a “Tommy†who has fought suffered and triumphed in Mesopotamia and is still on active service there’. While there is no indication that the poem has ever been published in its entirety extracts from it appeared in ‘The Bystander’ 27 November 1916; and ‘The Near East’ 6 July 1917; the latter headed ‘An Alphabet from Mesopotamia’ being preceded by the following: ‘A member of our Fighting Forces in Mesopotamia has composed some verses which he entitles “ The Alphabet of Mesopotamia.†Through the kindness of a correspondent we are allowed to reproduce here some specimens’. There may also be a reference in Catherine W. Reilly’s 1978 bibliography ‘English Poetry of the First World War’. Duplicated typescript titled ‘ALPHABET OF MESOPOTAMIA.’ 2pp foolscap 8vo. Text complete on two leaves of air mail paper glued together. Apparently contemporary and with the look of an item that has been handed around the mess room. Twenty-six four-line stanzas: one for each letter of the alphabet apart from a joint stanza for S and T and ending with an ‘ENVOI’. The first stanza reads: ‘ “A†Was an apple that grew so they say In the Garden of Eden down Qurnah way Till Eve came along and ate it one day And got thrown out of Mesopotamia.’ The poem includes the following stanzas: ‘ “F†Stands for Fritz who flies in the sky To bring down the brute we’ve many a try But the shells that we shoot seem to all pass him by And fall --- on Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “J†Is the jam with the label that lies And states that in Paris it won the first prize But out here we use it for catching the flies That swarm in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “U†Is the Lake we call Umm-el-Brahm And guards our flanks from all possible karm sic And waters Gorringe’s Barley Farm In the middle of Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “V†Is the Victory we won at Dujailah I heard of it first from a friend who’s a sailor Who read it in Reuter’s on board a mahela On the Tigris in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “W†Stands for the wonder and pain With which we regard the infirm and insane Old Indian Generals who guide the campaign Which we’re waging in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “Y†Is the yearning we feel every day For a passage to Basra and thence to Bombay If we get there we’ll see that we stay right away From this wilderness - Mesopotamia.’ Without date or place, but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. unknown‎
