General Sir Andrew Francis Barnard (1773-1855), distinguished Anglo-Irish officer in the British Army, decorated for his service
General Sir Andrew Francis Barnard army officer and courtier. Autograph Letter Signed ‘A F Barnard’ to ‘Augustus’ providing information regarding pictures in the royal collection and ‘the Clue to their History’.
18 December 1842; Canford i.e. Canford House Dorsetshire. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. From 1821 to the end of his life Barnard served as a courtier notably as Equerry to King George IV and it would appear that the present item is written in response to an enquiry made to the recipient of the letter regarding paintings in the royal collection. He writes from Camford House where Queen Adelaide widow of William IV had taken up residence. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium with thin mourning border. In fair condition on aged paper. Folded twice. Begins: ‘The three Ladies in the Picture of the Prince of Wales playing on the Violoncello are his three sisters viz. the afterwards Dutchess sic of Brunswick the Princess Amelia I forget who the third married but will let you know tomorrow - The Prince is evidently stepping out of tune and working away in true Amateur style Barnard was himself a Governor of the Royal Academy of Music this is perceptible in his attitude & were it not the young Lady with a book in her hand shews it by her Countenance and by her stopping her ears’. He considers the picture ‘a very clever one’ and attributes it to ‘Nollekins the father of the Sculptor’ i.e. ‘Old Nollekins’ Joseph Francis Nollekins 1702-1748. In ‘the picture of Charles the Second dancing with the Queen of Bohemia at the Ball given at the Hague by the States general’ he has ‘made out many of the figures’ and has also done so ‘at the one representing the Time with a Club drinking punch and Port - the one opposite where the Prince is peeping thro the door half open has the names of all the parties written on the back of it’. If the enquirer ‘wants information about any of the others I know a little about most of them and should be happy to communicate all that I have learned to any one about to print as it is a great pity that the Clue to their History should be lost’. 18 December 1842; Canford [i.e. Canford House, Dorsetshire]. unknown

General Sir Kenneth Anderson commander of British First Army during Operation Torch. Autograph Letter Signed 'Kenneth Anderson' discussing Kenya the 'severe crisis' in Britain conscription. With ANS from recipient Brigadier H. H. Dempsey
Dun Eaglais Kippen Stirlingshire Scotland. 14 February 1947. Dempsey's note dated 10 August 1960. Dempsey's obituary in The Times explains how 'In April 1945 he was appointed Brigadier I/C Administration East Africa Command' holding the position into the following year and retiring in December 1947 on account of ill health. For a full account of Dempsey's military career see his entry in Catholic Who's Who vol.35 1952. In an eight-line Autograph Note Signed at the end of Anderson's letter Dempsey states that Anderson 'had been my personal & immediate superior as G.O.C. in C. East Africa Command when I was his Brigadier I/C Administration. He became Governor of Gibraltar and has been dead some time now having himself got a coronary thrombosis.' The present item is an Air Mail letter. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium on blue paper. Addressed to 'Brigadier M. C. sic Demspey CBE No 87 General Hospital Nairobi Kenya Colony'. Anderson has confused Dempsey with the more illustrious General Sir Miles Christopher Dempsey 1896-1969.Anderson begins by condoling with Dempsey on 'a return of your thrombosis': 'it is no use going on kicking against the pricks and you must I fear face the need for a quiet life'. He next describes the weather in Scotland 'our 21st day of hard frost & snow'. A report on his wife's trip to the metropolis turns into an attack on the postwar Labour government: 'Kathleen is in London trying to buy clothes by candle & torch light and shivering in her hotel. I fear this country is in for a very severe crisis made worse by the theories & idealisms of the Govt which fiddles while Rome does not burn.' After more domestic news he reports: 'I saw Brown and also Fisher while in London at the end of last month. The War Office continues hopeful about all their grand schemes for Kenya: but it will be a miracle if they get 1/10th of the present estimated cost. And on the same lines I dont see how the country can carry a large Army and 18 months conscription. We are so hard pressed economically that I think it is fanstastic to try & carry such a Burden.' Dun Eaglais, Kippen, Stirlingshire [Scotland]. 14 February 1947. Dempsey's note dated 10 August 1960. hardcover

Two days later the 62nd Division joined the Corps. The enemy stubbornly opposed every year of our further advance eastward but was forced back to the ST. QUENTIN CANAL and the HINDENBURG Defence System.' Concludes: 'To all Ranks of the VI Corps I tender my sincere thanks. The work which they and their comrades have accomplished will live in the memory of the British Empire for all time.' From the Potter papers. GENERAL STAFF ARMY HEADQUARTERS INDIA.
Operations in Waziristan 1919-1920. Serial No. 351.
Calcutta Superintendent Government Printing India 1921. . First edition; 8vo 25 x 16.5 cm; complete with 32 photogravure plates including frontispiece 16 of which folding 4 of which large panoramic views 8 folding panoramas sketched on the spot 7 folding maps 3 of which loose in rear pocket 2 of which large coloured 75x92cm & 77x64cm previous ownership inscription to both endpapers with underlining to a few passages wide tear to margin of p97-8 not affecting text; typical contemporary half calf green cloth boards gilt morocco lettering pieces to spine remains of a shelf mark to spine extremities slightly rubbed from use binding tight due to quantity of maps and plates a very good copy; x 187 1pp.<br /> The scarce official account of the Waziristan campaign 1919–1920 and the preceding 1917 conflict with copious views and maps of the scarcely traversed terrain and landscape of Waziristan including Jandola Palosina Kotkai Kaniguram Barari Tangi Ahnai Tangi and Badergoi Valley. Also included are twelve Appendices detailing the units of the British forces in 1917 and 1919 the terms delivered to the Waziris and Mahsuds lists of British casualties and approximate numbers of the different specific tribes of the Mahsuds and Waziris involved in the conflict. <br /><br />In 1919 the short-lived Third Anglo-Afghan War concluded with the British ceding legal control of Afghan foreign affairs in return for the recognition by the Afghans of the Durand Line. Despite this a rumour spread amongst the Waziri and Mahsud tribesmen that the British intended to cede their territory to the British. They quickly conducted a series of raids against neighbouring settlements in the North-West Frontier in late 1919 causing over 400 casualties. <br /><br />Major-General Sir Andrew Skeen led the British response against the Tochi Waziris and Mahsuds in November of 1919. The campaign a took over 12 months due to the inexperience of the British units mainly comprised of light Indian divisions. The decisive eight-day battle of Ahnai Tangi involving the stand of the 2nd/5th Gurkhas immortalised in several paintings broke the Mahsud offensive and quickly resulted in a calming of violence and allowed the British to deliver their terms of control. <br /><br />Despite the apparent British victory the 1919-1920 campaign led to a change of policy in Waziristan. Britain decided to station permanent garrisons and have a much closer relationship with the irregular military units used. A large number of the locally raised troops had defected to the Waziris and Mahsuds during the campaign and it was hoped these measures would prevent further desertion. Britain also attempted a road construction effort in the region but this was seen as invasive and caused further conflict up to 1924.<br /><br />This copy was used by a member of the 1st Battalion of The Royal Scots during the time they were station in Secunderabad Hyderabad between 1922 and 1925.<br /> Calcutta, Superintendent Government Printing, India, 1921. hardcover
