Très épris du métier des armes, comprenant à merveille tous les détails du service, aimant avec une sorte de tendresse amoureuse la beauté de sa profession, Bourbaki a été peut-être le meilleur capitaine et le plus séduisant colonel de l'armée française. Un de ses compagnons d'Afrique, le général du Barail, a fixé l'impression que les plus calmes observateurs ressentaient, malgré eux, en présence de cet intrépide et sympathique turco « Le capitaine Bourbaki était le type le plus brillant de l'officier français. Encore dans un grade inférieur, il était universellement connu et aimé dans l'armée d'Afrique. » Là-bas, autour des feux de bivouac, on racontait intarissablement les exploits de Bourbaki. ‎Pierre-Marie-Michel Comte de Bruc de livernière, seigneur de la Gillière, de la parentière, de Bourneville, etc Maréchal des Camps et armées du roi, chevalier de l'ordre royal et militaire de Saint Louis, Emigré et ayant rejoint l'Armée de Condé, il rentre en France en 1793 poour rejoindre l'Armée Royale de la Vendée, que commandait en chef, le Général Charrette. He was born in Freeport Maine and now resides at West Amesbury Mass. He enlisted Oct. 23 1861 as a Private and was discharged with the same rank on 31 Dec 1861 at Madisonville Louisiana where he reenlisted. He was finally discharged at Savannah Georgia on 18 April 1866 and states that he had never been wounded. His application was approved by the three members of the Committee and he was mustered into the G.A.R. on 14 May 1873.
