PORTEOUS Patrick A.
A.L.s from Patrick Porteous VC.
Two sheets each measuring 8.0 x 6.0 ins (approx. 21.0 x 15.0 cms), on printed stationery from Porteous' home near Chichester, and dated 17 September 1995; near fine state. THE LETTER IS WRITTEN, SIGNED AND DATED ENTIRELY IN PORTEOUS' HAND, AND IS SOLD WITH A BRIEF RESUME OF HIS SERVICE CAREER AND A POOR QUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT. Patrick Porteous was gazetted for the Victoria Cross on 2 October 1942. The citation reads: 'On 19 August 1942 at Dieppe, France, Captain Porteous was liaison officer between two detachments whose task was to attack the heavy coast defence guns. During the initial assault Captain Porteous, with the smaller detachment was shot through the hand, but he nevertheless disarmed and killed his assailant, thereby also saving the life of a British sergeant. In the meantime the two officers of the other detachment had been killed and the Troop Sergeant Major seriously wounded, so Captain Porteous, in the face of witherin fire, dashed across open ground to take command and led the men in a successful charge against the enemy, when he was severely wounded for the second time. He continued to the final objective, however, but eventually collapsed after the last gun had been destroyed'. Captain (later Colonel) Patrick Anthony Porteous (1918-2000) was commissioned in the Royal Regiment of Artillery and served at Dieppe with Lord Lovat's Fourth Commando. He ended the war with 1 Airborne Division and subsequently completed a distinguished military career as Commander, Rheindalen Garrison of BAOR.

Powell, Anton & Stephen Hodkinson
THE SHADOW OF SPARTA
408 pages; The past 20 years have witnessed a revival of interest in the study of Sparta. The early 20th-century images of Spartans as hearty good fellows or scarlet-cloaked automata, have been superceded by more complex scholarly interpretations of this obscure civilization. The mystery surrounding Sparta has been instrumental in shaping scholarship on the subject. Historians have taken as much interest in the myths and disinformation attached to Sparta as they have in the truth about their city-state. The studies in this volume provide insights into the traditional question of what actually happened at Sparta. Yet the implications of this work go far beyond Laconia to focus on some of the most studied of Greek writers, showing how Athenians defined the achievement, or the failure, of their own city.

POWNALL General Henry
Chief of Staff. The Diaries of Sir Henry Pownall. [1933-1944]. [Edited by B. Bond]. COMPLETE SET IN DUSTWRAPPERS
2 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with 29 plates; blue cloth, gilt backs, a near fine set in unclipped dustwrapper. The set comprises Vol. I: 1933-1940 (by which time Pownall was CGS to the BEF in France); Vol. II: 1940-1944 (CoS to Mountbatten). In the latter part of his career Pownall was Chief of Staff to Mountbatten (then SACSEA). His remarkably frank diaries caused considerable controversy on publication, not least because of his opinions of Wingate. Unaccountably scarce as a set, especially in this condition.
