Wie schon der Titel verdeutlicht, ist das Werk nicht frei von den Einflüssen seiner Entstehungszeit. Dennoch bleib diese Sammlung von 3359 zum großen Teil bebilderten Kurzbiographien der Generale von den Anfängen der kurbrandenburgisch-preußischen Armee bis ca. zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs ein unentbehrliches Hilfsmittel für Historiker und Genealogen. Der Vorbesitzer hat die sehr seltenen beiden broschierten Register (die hier "Verzeichnisse" heißen) von dem Exemplar aus der Bibliothek der Führungakademie der Bundeswehr in Hamburg kopiert; das zweite, schmalere Register erschien kriegsbedingt ohnehin nur noch als Vervielfältigung des Schreibmaschinentyposkripts. Diese Register sind so unbekannt, daß sie selbst in der Berliner Staats- und der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek in Leipzig ebenfalls nur als Kopien vorliegen und die Wissenschaftliche Bibliothek des Militärgeschichtlichen Instituts der DDR 1980 sogar ein eigenes neues Verzeichnis anfertigen ließ. Der Rücken von Band 10 ist gering verblaßt, sonst handelt es sich jedoch um ein vollständiges, gut erhaltenes Exemplar mit nur leichten Gebrauchsspuren.

Oblong roy. 4to., First Edition, with title in red and black, text and captions in red, blue and black, 34 splendid large plates in photo-collotype and full-page musical score in blue; original red cloth, upper board ruled and blocked with regimental badge in gilt, expertly recased, BUT WITH SOME AGE- OR DAMP-DAMAGE TO 22 OF THE LATER PLATES (mercifully restricted mainly to upper blank margins and only materially affecting around ten plates); nevertheless a valuable record and a very scarce work. An unusually lavish production for a single battalion, this work is distinguished by the quality of the plates, which (damage apart) varies from very good to magnificent. The photographs are superbly executed by F. Bremner, photographer, variously of Lahore, Simla & Quetta, and their rendering as collotypes preserves the quite extraordinary detail of faces, uniforms and equipment. The plates include fine portraits of Major-General Frederick Walter Kitchener (Commanding 3rd (Lahore) Division) and Colonel J.C. Yale (commanding 1st Battalion), together with close-ups of the Colours and mess plate. The main body of plates is devoted, of course, to group studies. These include the officers (individually captioned), the battalion on parade, the Colour and colour sergeants (individually captioned), the NCOs (individually captioned), corporals, companies A-H (each company photographed separately), and a fine series of the battalion's various support units, trades and sports teams. An unusual composition is the plate 'Regimental Types' and depicting eight members of the battalion in a variety of uniforms including officer's full dress and OR's marching order. In addition to the plates, there is a detailed account of the battalion's service from Tournay (1794) to its arrival at Lahore Cantonment in 1906, together with pages devoted to regimental marchess. Not the least importance of this work must be as a superbly detailed record of the appearance of a regular battalion of line infantry of the period - crucially, the last phase of Edwardian opulence and before the irreversible changes brought about by the Great War. EXTREMELY SCARCE. IT IS UNCLEAR HOW MANY OF THESE REMARKABLE PORTFOLIOS WERE PRODUCED; CERTAINLY NOT MANY, AND EVEN FEWER CAN HAVE SURVIVED. Sutcliife p.103; not recorded by White (1965).

Medical Orderly; WW2 Autograph Notebook of Private T. M. Rankin 7394616 13 Field Dressing Station lecture notes compiled by him training as a medical orderly. With six photograph loosely inserted including three posed army groups.
The notebook dated January to February 1944. 65pp. in narrow ruled 32 x 13 cm notebook with maroon embossed boards and cloth spine. Rankin has etched his initials into the front board. All in pencil with the first page headed 'NO I LECTURES JAN-FEB. 44 T M RANKIN. 7394616. 13 F.D.S.' and carrying a numbered list of 38 topics from 'Observation of Patient' and 'Diet of Disease' to 'Fracture of Spine' and 'Burns'. Four pages of medical notes follow. Upside-down at the other end of the volume are 59 paginated pages of further notes preceded by a list of a further 15 topics numbered 39-53 from 'Eye Drops' to 'Rheumatic Fever'. Two autograph test papers by Rankin are loosely inserted one 1p. 4to marked at 69 out of 75 and the other 3pp. foolscap 8vo at 92%. Seven black and white photographs are also loosely inserted three of them stamped on the reverse 'COPYRIGHT PHOTOGRAPH "KENT MESSENGER" COUNTY PAPER OF KENT'. The first 11.5 x 16.5 shows a scene within a field hospital; the second same dimensions a platoon posing in five rows; the third 16 x 21cm a larger print of the second; the fourth is a 16 x 20.5cm portrait of a platoon posing in three rows; the fifth is a 13.5 x 24.5cm posed portrait of a 26 individuals in uniform including six women a padre a young girl and a man in civilian clothes posing on a stage in two rows with the girl sitting cross-legged at the front; the last photograph is a 14 x 9.5 cm postcard with a full-length image of a smiling nurse the name 'Flo' written in ink on the reverse.
