‎19. yüzyil baslarinda Avrupa dengesi ve Nizam-i Cedid ordusu.‎

‎Fine Turkish Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Turkish. 296 p. 19. yüzyil baslarinda Avrupa dengesi ve Nizam-i Cedid ordusu. European diplomacy in the early 19th century and Turkish Nizam-i Cedid army. The Nizam-i Cedid Army refers to the new military establishment of the Nizam-i Cedid reform program. The Nizam-i Cedid army was largely a failure in its own time, but proved to be a much more effective infantry force than the Janissaries. After losing the Russo-Turkish War of 1787-92 in 1792 to Austria and Russia, Selim III concluded that Ottoman military was in serious need of reform if the empire was to survive. As a result, he began implementing a series of reforms aimed at reorganizing the military after the fashion of European militaries. This included the usage of European training tactics, weapons, and even officers. These reforms troubled the Janissaries, who were suspicious and unreceptive towards the reforms. To this end, Selim III created the Nizam-i Djedid in 1797 in order to develop a replacement for the Janissaries. By 1806 this new army stood 26,000 men strong, equipped with a French-style uniforms, European weapons, and a modern artillery corps. Due to their distinctly modern nature, the army was named Nizam-i-Cedid, which has the meaning, in Turkish, of 'New Order.'‎

‎Sir Charles A Elton [Sir Charles Abraham Elton; Sir C A Elton] (1778-1853), English army officer, author and translator [John Ta‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed 'Charles A. Elton' from Sir Charles Abraham Elton to John Taylor editor of the 'London Magazine' submitting a contribution on 'Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' and discussing his own and other contributions.‎

‎'Clifton Bristol. August 16th.' 1821. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Elton on reverse of second leaf to 'John Taylor Esq.' Taylor had assumed the editorship of the London Magazine on the death by duel of John Scott in February 1821. Elton begins by informing Taylor that he has 'not been able yet to manage the Batrachomyomachia to my mind'. Elton's translation of 'The Battle of the Frogs and Mice' would appear anonymously in the issue of October 1821 as the second of a series named 'Leisure Hours'. He has instead 'sent some chit-chat to serve as an introduction'. 'On Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' appeared in September 1821 as the first of the series. He intends this as 'the first of occasional desultory papers of criticism poetry or the like: a specimen or two of the Battle of Frogs may form the second of the series'. Changing the subject he now declines two books Taylor has sent him to review: he feels that too much has already been said about Madame de Stael and he has 'already administered the ferula to her somewhat roughly'. He is 'equally diffident about Bonaparte's literary character' and asks whether 'Mr Hazlitt or Leigh Hunt' are not 'the fittest men to undertake it'. He feels that to 'enter fully' into Taylor's 'plan relative to the Monthly Literature seems to require the interchange of sentiments in conversation' and that this is 'one of the disadvantages of a periodical contributor residing in the country'. He suspects that 'a London domicile' is 'necessary for the convenient and ready arrangement and execution of this sort of monthly summary'. He has been 'thinking of some regular supply of poetry translated or original independent of the incidental passages in the Leisure Hours' but has not yet 'ascertained either my plan or my powers'. In the first part of a postscript he asks 'What is Knickerbocker Washington Irving & is he worth reviewing' This appears to be a reference to a footnote to the 'Epistle to Elia' by 'OLEN' published in the August 1821 issue of the London Magazine; the footnote also discusses two readings of that poem thanks Taylor 'for the Magazine' and ends 'It is a pity the writer who so ably reviewed Crabbe does not continue his "Series of Living Poets." 'Clifton [Bristol]. [August?] 16th.' [1821]. unknown‎

The recipient's name is not decipherable but he appears to have been a royal equerry. Blakeney hopes that he 'got safe home last night' and thanks him 'for giving me the pleasure of your Company'. ‎Autograph Letter Signed from Sir Gilbert Mackereth 'Gilbert Mackereth' British Consul at Damascus to Ernest Gye of the Foreign Office on his posting to Tangier and including a discussion of British artists there.‎

‎On letterheads of the British Consulate Damascus; 21 January 1933. 8 pp 12mo. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'Dear Ernest'. He begins by congratulating Gye on his promotion and 'on going to Tangier - a delightful spot'. It is however 'very sad' that Gye's 'guiding hand over our destinies will no longer be there in the Office'. He thanks Gye for his 'kindness' and 'sympathy': 'My path has lain along uneventful ways and it has been an untold solace to feel you did not despise those who had mearly sic to 'stand & wait''. Gye will find Tangier 'the gateway to Morocco' a 'joy' and 'the light there & in the rest of Morocco - it varies a lot will give your brush new elements with which to deal. It was interesting to watch its influence on the paintings of Bishop Henry A.R.A.' Gye will 'no doubt meet the weird but not untalented "Teddy Wolf" who seems to be less eccentric as an artist now than when first he came to Fez in 1928.' He finds Damascus 'curiously reminiscent of its offspring - Fez' and he finds it 'so little changed in ten years apart from the devastations of the Forces bombardment in 1925'. Ends by discussing accommodation. He 'can't bear Mrs. Hole's choice of a house' but hopes to change address. 'I feel strongly at the moment that H.M.G. ought to own all official houses'. ‎Sir John Lambert (1772-1847), British Army general in the Napoleonic Wars [Henry Bathurst (1762-1834), 3rd Earl Bathurst; Battle‎

‎The Fall of Fort Bowyer to the British following the Battle of New Orleans 1815. Contemporary Manuscript Copy of Autograph Despatch from Major John Lambert to Earl Bathurst describing the action.‎

‎'Head Quarters Isle Dauphine February 14th. 1815.' On paper with Golding & Snelgrove watermark dated 1811. 3pp foolscap 8vo. On laid paper with watermark: 'GOLDING & SNELGROVE 1811'. Aged and worn with closed tears along folds but with text complete and clear. The document includes two passages written in red ink which has faded but is still legible. The background to the present letter is given in Lambert's entry in the Oxford DNB: 'On 4 June 1813 Lambert was promoted major-general and was appointed to a brigade of the 6th division. … Having been sent to America he joined the army under Sir Edward Pakenham below New Orleans on 6 January 1815 with the 7th and 43rd foot regiments. In the unsuccessful attack on the American trenches made two days afterwards he commanded the reserve. When Pakenham was killed and General Gibbs mortally wounded the chief command devolved on Lambert. He decided not to renew the attack withdrew the troops which had been sent across the Mississippi and after retreating on 18 January re-embarked his force on the 27th. It went to the Bay of Mobile where Fort Bowyer was taken on 12 February and next day news arrived that peace had been signed.' The letter appears in its entirety in William James's 'A Full and Correct Account of the Military Occurrences of the Late War between Great Britain and the United States of America' London: 1818. It begins: 'My Lord My dispatch dated January 29th. will have informed your Lordship of the re-embarkation of this force which was completed on the 30th.: the weather came on so bad on that night and continued so until the 5th. February so that no communication could be held with the Ships at the inner anchorage a distance of about seventeen miles It being agreed between Vice Admiral Sir Alexander Cochrane and myself that operations should be carried towards Mobile it was decided that a force should be sent against Fort Bowyer situated on the eastern point of the entrance of the bay and from every information that could be obtained it was considered a brigade would be sufficient for this object with a respectable force of artillery.' Lambert proceeds to give a description of how following 'an incessant fire for two days' Fort Bowyer was 'given up to a British guard and British colours hoisted; the terms being signed by Major Smith military Secretary and Captain Ricketts R.N. and finally approved of by the Vice Admiral and myself'. He gives full credit to those involved. 'Head Quarters Isle Dauphine | February 14th. 1815.' [On paper with Golding & Snelgrove watermark dated 1811.] unknown‎
