Publisher's original brown cloth with gilt title on front cover. Includes four pages of text Article LXXXVI Regulations of 1881 concerning "uniforms dress amd home furniture"; 10 color lithograph plates and 9 b/w plates. Ex-library but only indicator is a notice from the Edgarton Martha's Vineyard Free Public Library affixed to the front pastedown. Illustrations are in black and white and color. Hard covers somewhat scuffed and stained. Scarce surviving Vietnam War era unit commemorative book. This work addresses basic combat training. This unit book highlights Company D 1st Battalion which had its graduation date on December 5 1968. Some members of the units names are circled or underlined. Major General Collins wrote to the Graduates of Basic Combat Training: "It is hoped that this book in the years to come will serves as a pleasant reminder to you of this brief period of your military service in training - a reminder also of the truth that soldiers are made not born. May your continuing duty insure that the defense structure of this country is always maintained at the highest degree of readiness." Basic Combat Training often known as "boot camp" is the introduction to Army service and where recruits learn the traditions tactics and methods of becoming a Soldier. During Basic recruits learn how to work as a member of a team to accomplish tasks. Recruits learn discipline including proper dress marching and grooming standards. Most importantly recruits are instilled with the Seven Core Army Values and the Soldier Creed. Basic Combat Training comes in three phases and lasts about ten weeks depending on the recruits military occupational specialty MOS. After the recruit graduates from basic training the soldier will undergo two additional phases of training known as Advanced Individual Training where the soldier will learn the job skills required of his or her MOS. Discharge papers for Thomas Fulford a private in Company B 64th Regiment Infantry Indiana Volunteers dated Sept. 30 1863 at St. Louis Mo by reason of Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. In left margin handwritten in red ink "Phthisis-hereditary-developed by exposure. He is unfit for the Invalid Corps". Signed at bottom "By Order of Maj. Gen. Schofield" and then signed "J.K. Hudson" with more writing below illegible. Stamped in red ink "paid by Robert Smith St. Louis Oct. 2 1863 Paymaster U.S.A." Also another stamp faint with just the word Ohio at right side above top fold. Verso bears handwritten "Discharge Certificate of Thomas F. Fulford Late of Co. B 64th Regt. Indiana Vols. Infantry". Private Fulford went on to live to the age of 68 fathering 8 children. At his death in 1899 his obituary referred to him as "well known old soldier of Washington Township". Major General John McAllister Schofield 1831 -1906 held major commands during the Civil War and later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. An interesting unofficial handbill relating to the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department on the eve of the War of 1812 with references to the impending war with Britain Indian business and the Barbary powers. In 1811 Congress introduced "A Bill for the Establishment of a Quarter-Master's Department" which the anonymous author of the present document notes "merges the duties of the superintendent of military stores in the quarter master without naming the former." Original blindstamped cloth gilt title on front cover expertly rebacked with tasteful spine to match. Old stamp on verso of title-leaf and on last plate. Else just about very good. This work issued under the auspices of the Quartermaster General contains ten fine chromolithographed plates showing the different uniforms of the Army as dictated by regulations in 1882. It would seem to be the first official such work and may have been prepared by H.A. Ogden whose named appeared on a similar publication noted by Bennett which was published in 1888 with twelve plates. Ogden later produced a much larger work UNIFORM OF THE ARMY OF THE U.S. ILLUSTRATED FROM 1774 TO 1889 which was issued from 1900 to 1907. HOWES R155 "aa." BENNETT p.85 ref.
