Supporting the application of 'Surgeon Charles Lowdell Officiating Agency Surgeon Baghelkhund sic applying for the Acting Appointment of Medical Officer in Charge Bhopal Battalion in the event of a vacancy occurring in October next'. Lowdell is holding his current post while Surgeon Goldsmith is on furlough and on his return will be without an appointment. 'His duties in connection with the special charge of the young Maharaja have been difficult and have required the exercise of tact and patience. Doctor Lowdell has been most successful and has gained the confidence of those who are most jealous of the supervision of the Maharajas health. . the Dispensaries in the Rewah State as well as other Dispensaries of the Agency have been well supervised by him and the vaccination returns for the year which gives the large number of 52000 children operated on testifies to Dr. Lowdell's care and attention int his important matter.' His mother Lady Napier who went to town the previous day has 'taken charge of the 2 Vols of the Athenaeum' his correspondent sent him. 'Lady Napier has promised to call herself at Leicester Square & deliver the books to you'. If he should be in when she calls Napier asks him to 'explain to her my theory as to the "Sources of the Nile" briefly embodied in the accompanying paper'. He asks him to either return the paper 'with your marks' or if he thinks 'it will bear the test of publicity could you manage to get it inserted for me in the "Times"' In a postscript initialled 'E. N.' he states that the Athenaeum volumes are the only ones he has received '& I have not heard of any others having been sent to Sir Charles Napier in Albemarle Street after I left London'. Report Manuscript 'Report on the Road from Frimley to Yorktown Surrey ' 'Ewart' Sir John Spencer Ewart while a Sandhurst cadet with coloured manuscript map and four other field sketches by him; with sketches by 'Sterling' and 'Gordon'.
Report on War Office 'Form 33'. Ewart's four additional sketches dated 1880 and 1881 the other material undated. The collection deriving from the Ewart family papers is in good condition on aged paper with fraying to the extremities of the report. Sir John Spencer Ewart son of General Sir John Alexander Ewart Colonel of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders entered Sandhurst in 1880 and left the following year with the sword of honour to join the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. For more information about Ewart and his father who also obtained 'special distinction' at Sandhurst see their entries in the Oxford DNB. ONE. Manuscript 'Report'. Unsigned but in Ewart's hand and with the accompanying map Item Two below docketed with his name. Written on a printed 'War. Office. Form 33. Road Report' form on one side of a piece of grey paper roughly 34 x 40 cm. It describes three locations - Yorktown Watchetts and Frimley - under six columns: Places on or near the Road; Distances in Miles and Furlongs subdivided into Intermediate and Total; Population subdivided into Houses and Persons; Accommodation On a March subdivided into Men and Horses; Supplies Transport and Water; and General Observations. Among the details are the number of bakers butchers waggons carts horses oxen and tons of hay and the observations give the details of th suitability of the locations as defensive positions. TWO. Map 30 x 30.5 cm attached to Item One and furled up with it with 'Ewart' in pencil at head. In ink and colours to a scale of six inches to the mile with Frimley at foot and 'York Town' at head. Between 1816 and 1819; Scotland. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Between 1816 and 1819 Hope held the post of Major General Commanding in North Britain i.e. Commander-in-Chief in Scotland. On 9.5 x 4 cm slip of wove paper presumably the valediction cut from a letter. In good condition lightly aged with the reverse bearing a thin strip of grey paper from mount along thin strip at head. Lieutenant-General Sir George Thomas Napier. Autograph Letter Signed 'Geo. Napier' to Daniel Flexney concerning the loss of some bonds written with his left hand following the loss of his right arm during the Peninsular War.
Upminster Middlesex. 30 July 1818. 1p. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition on aged paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Danl. Flexney Westborne Place Bayswater near London' with two postmarks in red ink one round and the other oval the second in two parts both giving year 1818. Docketed and with the following note above the text of the letter: 'From Lieut Col George Napier To Mr. Danl. Flexney written with his left hand after the loss of his right Arm in battle in the Peninsular.' The letter reads: 'Sir I take the liberty of asking you if by chance any box or parcel was left at your house in which papers might be put as I have lost some Bonds or mislaid them. I had them before I left Bays Water but where I put them or what is become of them I am quite ignorant & merely write in case you may recollect my ever having mentioned them to you; I am glad to hear Mrs. Flexney is better & sincerely wishing her a good recovery I remain Sir Your Obedt. Servt. Geo. Napier'. Upminster [Middlesex]. 30 July [1818]. unknown

Lord John Manners Marquis of Granby army officer after whom many English pubs are named. Autograph Letter Signed 'John Manners' regarding the broken health of one Lieutenant Hawkins and his inability to rejoin his regiment in Jamaica.
Parliament Street London . 23 August 1770. 1p. 4to. In fair condition aged and worn with fraying to edges and loss at one corner from the opening of the seal. There is a faint pencil note on three lines in another hand at the foot of the letter. The letter reads: 'Having considerd Lt Hawkins situation and the effect the Climate of Jamaica has had upon him – I am of opinion that He is totally unable to join his Regiment and there is great reason to fear his health will never be such as to enable him to do duty with it in that Island John Manners Parliament St. Augst. 23d. 1770'. At the time of writing Manners was a month away from hiis death. He had relinquished the position of Commander in Chief of the Forces in the previous year but still held those of Master-General of the Ordnance and Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards. American contractors had just completed the Oruro/Viacha railway in 1908 with 125 miles laid to mineral rich regions to and from La Paz.
