Pages 1444-1458 1 pages. Stamp and Ink notations on first page. This was presented at the Thirty-second Annual Session of the American College of Physicians St. Louis Mo. April 10 1951. Topics covered include Thermal Radiation Effects and Nuclear Radiation Effects. This document includes footnotes 11 black and white photographs a summary and a bibliography. On the day of the bombing the outstanding symptoms of the Japanese exposed to radiation were nausea and vomiting followed soon by fever leukopenia and diarrhea. Epilation purpura and oropharyngeal lesions appears about two weeks after exposure. Epilation was the surest external sign of exposure to ionizing radiation. This work reported that blast injuries and burns accounted for approximately 85 per cent of the casualties from an atomic bomb explosion high in the air. Studies in Japan indicated that 90 per cent of all persons who needed medical care in the first week had burns and that 60 to 85 per cent of all patients were burned. The ionizing radiation from an explosion of the Hiroshima or Nagasaki type is delivered in about 90 seconds and 50 per cent of the total is delivered in the first second. Clinically significant amounts of radioactivity are not left in the target area following detonations of this type. Because ionizing radiation injuries are unique effects of the atomic bomb these phenomena sometimes provoke emphasis out of proportion to the actual danger and thus create new psychologic hazards. Dann der 22.Juni 1941: Regimentsfest, eine durchzechte Nacht, trunkene Seligkeit und plötzlich aus dem Volksempfänger die Sondermeldung: Einmarsch der deutschen Wehrmacht in Russland. Vier Tage später rollten sie gen Osten. Hier setzt das Tagebuch des Autors ein: Bei jeder Gelegenheit hält er das Erlebte in seinem Heft fest. Kurz, knapp, ohne Umschweife - aber auch ausführlich, wenn die Zeit es zuließ und er zum Nachdenken kam. Keine Wochenschau, kein Frontbericht kann den Weg nach Stalingrad so persönlich, dramatisch und ehrlich nachvollziehen wie der Autor. Heute, nach 4o Jahren, haben die Aufzeichnungen nichts an Spannung und Aussagekraft verloren. Der Funker Paul-Hans Voss hat nichts geschönt, verändert, weggelassen oder ergänzt. General Mackensen erscheint auf dem Gefechtsstand und gibt von hier den Befehl zum Angriff an die 14.Panzei-Division rechts, wo der 92-er Anschluß an uns haben. Im selben Augenblick 18 Bomber. Der General muß volle Deckung nehmen, der Verbandsplatz fliegt in die Luft. Artilleriestellungen werden getroffen, aber unsere Panzer mahlen sich stur zum Dorf vor und darüber hinaus. Der Russe wehrt sich verzweifelt, doch seine 52-er Tanks nutzen nichts. In der beginnenden Dunkelheit kämmt die Infanterie das Gelände ab. Nun ist es Nacht. Aber niemand schläft, überall ein vorsichtiges Fühlen und Tasten nach dem Gegner. Die Kompanien schieben Spähtrupps vor, Pioniere legen Minen. Bei Dnjepropetrowsk gleiten die Scheinwerfer der Russen unruhig hin und her, suchen den Himmel ab. Fern dröhnen Bombeneinschläge, flackert das Mündungsfeuer der Batterien und schweben Leuchtbomben minutenlang am Himmel. Tauchen das Gelände in unbarmherziges, grelles Licht, in welchem jede Bewegung erstarrt. Leuchtkugeln zischen hoch - weiss, grün oder rot.
