‎"Il y a quelques décennies cette étude aurait épargné des hésitations et des questions lors d’exercices à de nombreux officiers d’active et de réserve. L’auteur s’est donné pour mission de présenter une somme de ce que ceux-ci doivent savoir pour posséder une base de connaissances convenables pour remplir leurs fonctions de chef militaire, à tous les niveaux, en se posant la question : quelle guerre préparons-nous ? Le titre « tactique théorique » est assez réducteur par rapport au sujet traité ; il englobe la tactique classique, ou plus exactement les différentes formes de la tactique classique et de ses annexes, car l’amateur fait de la tactique, le professionnel est d’abord logisticien ; comme aurait dit Eisenhower. Rappelons que la grande tactique d'il y a deux siècles est devenue la science opérative, la stratégie est seulement évoquée dans ce livre, assez longuement quand même. Michel Yakovleff s’appuie sur des lectures considérables, tant de classiques de l’art de la guerre comme naturellement Clauzewitz, que d’historiens nombreux, de l’antiquité à nos jours. Dans ce fort volume complété par une grosse bibliographie il commence par chercher à définir la nature de la guerre, comme art et science puis comme recherche de la victoire. Dans la nature de la guerre, l’initiative, le risque, la surprise, la friction et le brouillard de la guerre sont des éléments, communs et permanents à travers les âges, qu’il développe suffisamment avec exemples et schémas. Ensuite, l’auteur détaille les éléments du raisonnement tactique, l’espace dans toutes ses modalités, géographique et emploi, l’ennemi, ses capacités et ses modes d’action, le temps, enfin le raisonnement tactique... La partie la plus développée est celle des manœuvres qui inclut le maniement des forces, le commandement, les fonctions opérationnelles classiques d’aujourd’hui, bien que souvent méprisées actuellement par les décideurs de bureau qui recherchent des « économies à tout prix », le soutien et la logistique. Il y a même une page sur la défense sol-air avec une excellente définition de l’artilleur sol-air, simple mais connue malheureusement de trop rares spécialistes. Cette partie se termine avec le contact avec l’ennemi. Enfin les dernières parties traitent de façon détaillée des différentes formes de l’offensive et de la défensive, plus complexes que l’on ne le croit communément. Ce livre à vocation didactique, est complété par de très nombreux schémas que l’on peut reproduire sur un tableau, et des exemples nombreux souvent donnés sous forme d’encart avec cartes simplifiées à l’appui. Les exemples d’Alexandre le Grand, d’Hannibal, de Frédéric de Prusse ou de Napoléon sont toujours valables, car les actions guerrières de n’importe quelle époque ont de nombreux points communs. Deux ensembles sont développés : les combats et actions de la guerre de Sécession américaine, première guerre moderne, connue de peu de Français, et ceux de la guerre à l’Est entre 1941 et 1945. Cette imbrication de textes denses et d’exemples vivants rend la lecture de ce livre facile. Cet ouvrage est remarquable. Il est à conseiller aux historiens qui décrypteront plus complètement ce qu’ils lisent, et surtout aux jeunes officiers qui pourront acquérir mieux que les bases d’une culture professionnelle indispensable."
