San Antonio: C. Ekmark Photo 1946. Good plus. Panoramic photograph 8 x 48.25 inches. Minor staining and soiling light creasing. A vivid yardlong image capturing the "special troops" of the Second Infantry Division while training at Camp Swift Texas in the wake of the Second World War. Seven groups of soldiers are ranged across the photograph with the band in the middle all posed in front of a long line of tanks transport trucks and half-tracks. Camp Swift located just west of Austin in Bastrop County can be seen in the far background. "Special troops" are a unit of the special forces designed to provide command and control of a larger Army unit among other duties.

"During World War II Camp Swift reached a maximum strength of 90000 troops and included at different times the 95th 97th and 102d Infantry divisions the 10th Mountain Division the 116th and 120th Tank Destroyer battalions and the 5th Headquarters Special Troops of the Third Army. Swift was the largest army training and transshipment camp in Texas. It also housed 3865 German prisoners of war. After the war much of the site was returned to former owners. [United States Army Board of Education for Freedmen]
Tax Receipt for Taxes of 1864 issued to a named individual living in East Baton Rouge for payment of about $25 in property tax on four town lots and a 4 acre plot
New Orleans: Duncan & Co. Stationer's and Booksellers 124 Camp Street 1865. Very Good. Partly printed receipt dated November 7 1865. Approximately 20 x 13 cm. Property owned by individual listed on back side. Taxing white property owners in Louisiana to support education of African Americans was probably the primary method of funding education for African Americans in Union-controlled Louisiana since African Americans were too poor for their taxes to support such schools. This receipt is signed by a Captain Sheridan on behalf of the Provost Marshall. After the end of the Civil War the newly created Freedmen's Bureau would replace this Board of Education for Freedmen in the Army's Department of the Gulf. Efforts to seize and redistribute property from defeated Confederates to those formerly enslaved were thwarted by President Andrew Johnson. We doubt that the Freedmen's Bureau had authority to continue this property tax. Duncan & Co., Stationer's and Booksellers, 124 Camp Street unknown

Passenger Guide Middle Pacific c.1947 With Laid-In Fleet Logistic Support Wing Letter for the JRM 'Mars' flying boats
Middle Pacific / Hawaii-Region: Army Printing Plant 1947. Very Good/No Dust Jacket As Issued.
Crossing the Ocean in the Age of Propellers
An evocative artifact of the 'Golden Age' of military transport documenting the massive logistical pivot from total war to global peacekeeping in the Pacific Theater.

This guide served as the essential orientation for personnel transitioning across the 'Middle Pacific' network covering destinations from the Hawaiian Islands to occupied Japan and China. While the primary text details flight decorum and survival-including the famous advice for women to wear slacks for parachute safety-the unique laid-in letter from the Fleet Logistic Support Wing Alameda CA adds a critical layer of naval aviation history.
This supplementary document provides specific safety protocols for the JRM 'Mars' flying boats the largest Allied aircraft of the era which maintained the vital 'bridge' between California and Hawaii.

KEY FEATURES
Provenance/Add-on: Includes a rare 2-sided typed letter from the Fleet Logistic Support Wing out of NAS Alameda California.
Content: Detailed orientation for 11 Pacific destinations including Iwo Jima Okinawa Siam and Alaska.
Aviation Specifics: Outlines flight decorum safety procedures and the post-war conversion of C-54/DC-4 aircraft for passenger service.
Rarity: WorldCat/OCLC locates only 2 institutional copies Stanford and Claremont Libraries.
Specs: 8.5 x 5.75 inches; v 54 pp. Illustrated with original mid-century drawings and sketches.

CONDITION: Very Good. The pictorial stapled wrappers are tight and square with moderate shelf handling wear. The rear cover shows some wrinkling along the bottom edge and lower corner. Internally the text is clean with light even age-toning. The laid-in 8 x 15 inch letter is well-preserved with original folding creases. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE --
Produced by the Army Printing Plant in the 'Middle Pacific' this guide captures the U.S. military's rapid evolution into a global administrative force. It reflects the unique culture of post-1945 air travel where military transport ATC was the only reliable way to navigate the vast distances of the Pacific.

The laid-in letter is particularly significant for its link to NAS Alameda and the Martin JRM Mars flying boats. By 1947 the Mars fleet named 'Hawaii' 'Philippine' 'Marianas' 'Marshall' and 'Caroline' was setting world records for passenger and cargo loads on the Alameda-to-Honolulu run. The letter's safety instructions represent the high-stakes reality of flying these 'Behemoths of the Bay'-vessels so large they were essentially flying ships.

SUBJECTS: U.S. Army Air Forces Air Transport Command NAS Alameda Pacific Theater Logistics Martin JRM Mars Post-WWII Occupation Military Aviation Ephemera Travel Guides Military Manuals Ephemera Aviation History.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE: OCLC # Various only 2 institutional records found. Uniform of the Army of the United States. October 1 1908
1908. U.S. ARMY. The Uniform of the Army of the United States. October 1 1908. Compiled by the Authority of the Secretary of War Under the Supervision of Brigadier General J.B. Aleshire Quartermaster General U.S.A. Washington DC: The Eichert Lith. Co. and A.B. Graham Co. Lith. 1908. 1st ed. Portfolio of 126 chromolithographic plates all issued chromolithographic title plate 1 plate of text. Orig. 3/4 red leather portfolio marbled endpapers red leather label on front board. Top left and bottom right corners from title page are chipped else very good or better. An extremely scarce collection of prints showing all uniform parts of the time from full dress uniforms to sock and underwear. Rank insignia brass collar and sleeve insignia hats cords shoes dress and field uniforms etc. Eighteen of the plates were deleted prior to issue because their subjects had become obsolete. "The decision to proceed with the present publication was dictated by two major considerations: the unquestioned position of Henry Alexander Ogden as a military artist and the inaccessibility of the original work to collectors and historians." Ogden had prepared for the office of the Quartermaster General 70 paintings depicting official army uniforms from 1776 to 1907. Forty-four of these represented the more colorful uniforms in use from 1776 to 1888. "In 1890 the Quartermaster General published these 44 paintings together with a text covering the history and regulations. At the same time the plates were privately published along with an illuminating text by Henry Loomis Nelson. It is the latter edition that forms the basis for the present publication. Ogden rendered greater service to historians of the American Army uniform than any man in history" Publisher's Note. unknown
