Cover has some wear and soiling This reflects the state of the art the state of knowledge and the state of practice during a period of increasing U.S. operations during the Vietnam War. Boobytraps FM 5-31 Field Manual. Topics covered include introduction and principles of boobytraps basic doctrine planning and installation equipment firing devices demolition materials including small missile construction techniques miscellaneous boobytraps from improvised materials. Also chapter on detecting and removing boobytraps clearing and disarming methods. A booby trap is a device or setup that is intended to kill harm or surprise a person or animal unknowingly triggered by the presence or actions of the victim. As the word trap implies they sometimes have some form of bait designed to lure the victim towards it. At other times the trap is set to act upon trespassers that violate personal or restricted areas. The device can be triggered when the victim performs some type of everyday action e.g. opening a door picking something up or switching something on. They can also be triggered by vehicles driving along a road as in the case of victim-operated improvised explosive devices IEDs. Booby traps should not be confused with mantraps which are designed to catch a person. Lethal booby traps are often used in warfare particularly guerrilla warfare and traps designed to cause injury or pain are also sometimes used by criminals wanting to protect drugs or other illicit property and by some owners of legal property who wish to protect it from theft. Bulletins G.H.Q. A. E .F.; United States Army in the World War 1917-1919
Washington DC: Department of the Army Historical Division 1948. Presumed First Edition First printing thus--Reproduction of Bulletins originally issued 1917-1919. Hardcover. Good. 2 267 3 pages. This volume is labeled 17 on the spine. Note: Documents herein are reproduced as found without editorial correction of spelling or other grammatical errors in text. Ex-Military unit Headquarters Library with usual library markings. The United States Army in the World War 1917-1919 was a seventeen-volume compilation of selected AEF records gathered by Army historians during the interwar years. The seventeen volumes are: v. 1. Organization of the American Expeditionary Forces; v. 2. Policy-forming documents of the American Expeditionary Forces; v. 3. Training and use of American units with the British and French; v. 4-8. Military operations of the American Expeditionary Forces; v. 9. Meuse-Argonne operations of the American Expeditionary Forces; v. 10. The Armistice Agreement and related documents; v. 11. American occupation of Germany; v. 12-15. Reports of the Commander-in-Chief AEF Staff Sections and Services; v. 16. General Orders GHQ AEF; and v. 17. Bulletins GHQ AEF. Volume 17 may be among the scarcest due to it being issued last and having a narrow content. Bulletin No. 1 was dated Headquarters A.E.F. Paris France August 6 1917 and issued by Lieutenant Colonel James G. Harbord Chief of Staff by command of Major General Pershing. It dealt with the 'free entry of parcels sent by private persons abroad to officers and men of the American Expeditionary Forces." The last entry is Bulletin No. 44 dated General Headquarters A.E.F. France June 6 1919 which in compliance with Training Bulletin No. 34 G. H.Q. May 1 1919 on baseball published the official schedule. It was noted that leave necessary to carry out the schedule was authorized and was necessary in the military service. It was signed James G. Harbord Chief of Staff by command of General Pershing. Bulletins were numbered sequentially by year. Bulletin No. 20 was the last in the series for 1917. Bulletin No. 108 was the last in the series for 1918. Bulletin No. 44 is the last one presented for 1919. These bulletins addressed a variety of issues from pay allotments to citizenship and offer an official perspective of the operations of the American Expeditionary Forces that few if any other sources of information provided. Woodward 1833-1884 edited the medical section and Edward Curtis 1838-1912 edited the microscopical section. Thousands of specimens are described nearly all the aftermath of the Civil War. Mostly human specimens the name and rank of the donor is noted as well as a brief summary of the context in which the injury or illness leading to death or amputation occurred. The catalogues also include comprehensive collections of surgical instruments medical artifacts including prosthetics and battlefield medical supplies and historical documents related to military medicine.

The surgical section contains descriptions of over 4700 specimens “varying from cranium to tumors graphically detailing the wounds suffered by thousands of soldiers during the Civil War. The attending physician’s name is listed with each case. Many of these descriptions are specifically related to injuries which are further enumerated in the Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion†Rutkow. That catalogue is also significant because it is “the first publication that actually gives an idea as to the number and type of photographs taken by or for army physicians†during the war Burns. The third part contains a plate depicting an “Apparatus for Microphotography†and five plates depicting photographs of tissue specimens taken with this apparatus. The editors of the second and third parts Edward Curtis and Joseph Woodward performed the autopsy on Abraham Lincoln. Curtis was an early pioneer of photomicrography.

The Army Medical Museum was founded in 1862 by U.S. Army Surgeon General William A. Hammond as a center for the collection of specimens for research in military medicine and surgery. Hammond directed medical officers in the field to collect "specimens of morbid anatomy.together with projectiles and foreign bodies removed" and to forward them to the newly founded museum for study. During and after the war Museum staff took pictures of wounded soldiers showing the effects of gunshot wounds as well as results of amputations and other surgical procedures. The information collected was compiled into six volumes of The Medical and Surgical History of the War of the Rebellion published between 1870 and 1883.

Burns Early Medical Photography in America 1839-1883 New York 1983; Rutkow.
