This spectacular copy with gilt as bright as the day published bears the huge and bold ownership signature on inner flyleaf of "D.B. Henderson / Dubuque / Iowa / Sept 9 1885." David B. Henderson 1840-1906 served Congress as U.S. Representative from Iowa from 1883 to 1903 and as Speaker of the House from 1899 to 1903 -- more importantly he served valiantly in the Union army from 1861 to 1864 getting shot in the neck at the Battle of Fort Donelson and losing a foot and part of a leg in the Second Battle of Corinth both in 1862. Army Headquarters and the XIX Tactical Command. Classified as Secret when first published but later declassified. Volume 1 The Operations contains a monthly accounting of overall army operations in the European theater commanded by Lt. Gen. George S. Patton. Volume 2 "Staff Section Reports " not available at present is a compilation of general and special staff sections operations reports. The volume offered here "The Operations " combines narratives of specific operations with data on movements casualties and loss of materiel supplemented with maps and supporting documents. Condition is very good or better. There are some creases on the front wrap along with a signature of the former owner Maj. L. V. Frisch. Interior pages are clean and unblemished. Each section in the book is introduced by a clear acetate page. Scarce in its original edition though available in various electronic forms. 421 pp. Plus annexes 22 pp 36 pp. 66 pp and 146 pp. Large bulky and heavy--may require special shipping arrangements. . U. A handsome first edition of this Civil War fiction sometimes attributed to John McElroy simply because it was first serialized between October-July 1885 in the newspaper he edited the "National Tribune" of Washington DC. Intriguing evidence that supports but doesn't prove this comes with this copy in the form of a laid-in heavy stock light red 5½" X 3¼" printed card. Recto titled "For $50 a Month" and consists of a "Personal to My Comrades" plea urging that Congress pass a "$50 a month pension for all honorably discharged veterans of the Union Army who served 90 days or more. the merest justice and recognition from the Government to the aged and deserving men who in their youth saved its existence at the greatest sacrifice to themselves." Signed in type "John McElroy." Verso contains another printed statement signed in type "The National Tribune" requesting "your $5 NOW" because "War work has taken many National Tribune employees. French Army Officers
Beautiful 1793 Military Certificate of Good Conduct for Soldier of the First Battalion in the Army of the Alps
France. Fair with no dust jacket. 1793. Ephemera. On offer is a fine example of a military certificate of good conduct issued by one of the French Revolutionary armies. The certificate is dated 25 Prairial Year 2 French revolutionary calendar corresponding to June 15th 1793. The recipient is a soldier who is serving in the 1st Battalion. The certificate commends his service and valour. The certificate is signed by several officers. One signature reads simply Commandant en Chef or Commander in Chief. At that time the Commander in Chief of the Army of the Alps was the famed French General François Christophe Kellermann. Kellerman was a life-long soldier entering the Royal Army at age 15 and later rising to command revolutionary troops and then serving under Napoleon as one of his Marshals. In 1797 the Army of the Alps was merged into The Army of Italy and was one of Napoleons first commands. The Army of the Alps was reconstituted in the French Army during WWII. The folded certificate was then sealed with a red wax seal which is still present. For a historian this is an outstanding document that connects the owner to one of the great Generals of the Napoleonic Wars and to an Army that fought extensively in the Napoleonic Wars. Dating from mid-1793 this certificate measures 8.5 inches by 12.0 inches. The document was originally folded into four panels 8 inches by 3 inches and then folded in half. It has been unfolded and affixed to sheet of heavy paper likely dating from the same time period. There are wear marks along the fold lines and on the edges. The handwriting is fairly legible being written in a copperplate script. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 1 pages; Signed by Author . unknown
