A scarce GAR almanac celebrating the hard-won victory of the over the rebellion summarizing the events with the addition of an astronomical calendar for 1880 compiled by C.H. Metcalf. The front wrapper's diamond design includes symbols and the names of four Grand Army Corps: Sheridan Cavalry Wilson's Cavalry Engineer & Pontonier and Hancock's First Corps Veterans. Three full-page engravings are captioned "Memorial Day" "First Blood-The 6th Massachusetts Volunteers in Baltimore" and "Prisoners' Camp or 'Pen' Andersonville Ga." The majority of ads are from Worcester Mass. businesses including The Parker Gun Bush's Liver Pills J.R. Torrey Razors and Straps and the Taylor & Farley Parlor Chapel and Hall Organs on back wrapper. <br/><br/>Membership of the Grand Army was open to any honorably discharged soldier or sailor who served between April 1861 and April 1865. No person who had borne arms against the United States was eligible. The silver clasped binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. The pages are clean with no soiling writing or tears. The book is undated but there is a letter tucked in the book with a date of 1964. The covers show some moderate edgewear yellowing and light soiling. We always ship in a sturdy cardboard box! Title page has some markings from the flaps and some foxing. There are 127 total color plates originally had 144 numbered plates but 18 were removed for being obsolete and there is a Plate 93-A. Wade who submitted many of the reports as the superintendent of weapons casting and experiments at government foundries at top of title page. He had this book sent to the original owner Easton Hodgkinson whose name he wrote at the top of the title page. A copy of a letter dated from 1856 that is about the book and signed by W. Wade and addressed to Easton Hodgkinson is attached to a string that was run down the spine. Hard cover published by Henry Carey Baird in 1856. No dust jacket. Black covers with embossed designs on front and back and gilt lettering and design on spine. Covers have some scuffing corners are bumped and worn and front cover is torn at top along the spine. Back cover has an indentation and tear along top edge and two tears along side edge. Spine is cocked some and is worn at the ends with some tearing and fraying. Endpapers have some writing in pencil. There are some pencil markings on title page and several other pages. Endpapers have foxing and spotting. Pages have some tanning and some pages have spotting. There are two foldout drawings in middle of book. Side edge of pages has some staining near bottom corner and bottom edge of pages has some soiling by corner. Book is in good condition. 428 pages 5.8 lb.; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 428 pages; Signed by Author . Henry Carey Baird hardcover

London : July 12 1874. 1874. Good. - Letter penned in black ink and filling both sides of a cream-colored 7 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of letterhead with his address printed in red raised lettering at the top of the recto. Signed "Fred. Hamilton". The left edge of the letter is reinforced with linen tape. Hamilton's name & the title of his book have been noted in another hand below his signature. Folded once for mailing. Together with a newspaper cutting of his obituary. Good. <p>General Hamilton writes to Mrs. Ford: "I leave a copy of the morning's which you can return at your convenience containing a review of my book. I hope you have recovered from the heat of yesterday". The book published in London by John Murray in 1874 is "The Origin and History of the First or Grenadier Guards. From Documents in the State Paper Office War Office Horse Guards Contemporary History Regimental Records Etc.".<p>General Sir Frederick William Hamilton 1815-1890 was a British Army officer who was commissioned into the Grenadier Guards in 1831. He commanded his regiment throughout the Eastern campaign of the Crimean War including the Battle of Alma the Battle of Balaklava the Siege of Sebastopol and the Battle of Inkerman where he was wounded and had his horse shot out from under him. He then served as Major General commanding the Brigade of Guards from 1868 to 1870 before retiring with the rank of full general in July 1881. [London ]: July 12, 1874. unknown
