The Army Service Forces was one of the three autonomous components of the United States Army during World War II the others being the Army Air Forces and Army Ground Forces created on 9 March 1942. By dividing the Army into three large commands the Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall drastically reduced the number of officers and agencies reporting directly to him. The Army Service Forces brought together elements of five different components of the Army: elements of the War Department General Staff WDGS especially its G-4 division responsible for logistics; the Office of the Under Secretary of War; the eight administrative bureaus; the nine corps areas which became service commands; and the six supply arms and services which became known as the technical services. The Army Service Forces was initially known as the United States Army Services of Supply but the name was changed on 12 March 1943 as it was felt that the term "supply" did not accurately describe the broad range of its activities. The Army Service Forces was abolished on 11 June 1946 and most of its functions were taken over by the War Department General Staff. For most of its existence the Army Service Forces was commanded by General Brehon B. Somervell with Lieutenant General Wilhelm D. Styer as his chief of staff. After Styer left for the Pacific he was succeeded by Major General LeRoy Lutes on 18 April 1945. Brigadier General Lucius D. Clay was the Deputy Chief of Staff for Requirements and Resources and as such he was responsible for the development of the Army Supply Program the operation of the Lend-Lease program and liaison with the War Production Board concerning the allocation of raw materials. Although he had his own logistics staff in the G-4 division of the War Department General Staff it was to Somervell and Styer that Marshall turned to for advice on logistical matters and it was Somervell who attended the important wartime conferences. Six supply arms and services became part of the new organization: the Corps of Engineers Signal Corps Ordnance Department Quartermaster Corps Chemical Warfare Service and the Medical Department. They were designated "supply services" in April 1942 and "technical services" in April 1943. A seventh technical service the Transportation Corps was created in July 1942. The technical services developed military equipment manufactured or purchased it stored it in depots maintained and repaired it and issued it to the troops. Each had its own budget and together they accounted for half of the Army's appropriations. The service commands were the field agencies of the ASF. There were initially nine of these each responsible for a different geographical region. In August 1942 the Military District of Washington also assumed the status of a service command. The Northwest Service Command was created in September 1942. It was responsible for the construction and maintenance of the Alaska Highway the operation of the railway between Skagway Alaska and Whitehorse and the Canol Project. Army installations in the continental United States that were placed directly under the service commands included recruiting stations induction and reception centers repair shops enemy alien and prisoner of war camps medical and dental laboratories Reserve Officers' Training Corps units dispensaries finance offices disciplinary barracks and named general hospitals except for the Walter Reed General Hospital. ‎US Army Infantry School‎

‎The Fire Squad; TC 7-1‎

‎Fort Benning GA: US Army Infantry School 1974. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Very good. The format is approximately 7 inches by 5 inches. 18 2 pages plus covers. Illustrations. In military terminology a squad is among the smallest of military organizations and is led by a non-commissioned officer. NATO and U.S. doctrine define a squad as an organization "larger than a team but smaller than a section." while U.S. Army doctrine further defines a squad as a "small military unit typically containing two or more fire teams." In American usage a squad consists of eight to fourteen soldiers and may be further subdivided into fireteams. This training circular reflects the state-of-the-art the state-of-the-knowledge and the state-of-the-practice after the end of major combat operations during the Vietnam War. This training circular was prepared by the US Army Infantry School Fort Benning Georgia to introduce new doctrine on dismounted tactical movement of rifle squads when not in contact with the enemy. Infantry combat has two chief requirements--to more and to fight. A squad spends far more time moving than fighting. On this basis alone it is important to use the best possible techniques for moving. Howerver movement techniques become even more important when it is recognized that a moving unit normally makes contact with the enemy at a time and place of the enemy's choosing. In short the situation at the moment of contact is designed by the enemy to be to his advantage. to reduce this enemy advantage the squad leader must us the least number of men to find the enemy and when enemy contact is expected he must always have one fire team in a carefully selected position ready to fire to cover the movement of the other team. In following these rules a simple system of squad movement must be used which employs each fire time in a standard formation. The distance between fire team formations--and the ability of each one to support the other by fire--vary with the terrain and tactical situation. US Army Infantry School paperback‎

‎US. Army Quartermaster School U. S.‎

‎History and Traditions of The Quartermaster Corps; NIPUB 114 ATSM-FTM-OE‎

‎Fort Lee Virginia: U.S. Army Quartermaster School Supply Training Center of the Army School System 1981. Presumed first printing thus. Staplebound. Good. The format is approximately 8.25 inches by 10.75 inches. 20 pages. Illustrations. Tabular Data. References. Food Service. Information on Major General Thomas Mifflin inside the front cover. Quartermaster Corps Insignia inside the rear cover. Cover has some wear soiling and name of previous owner Janice Burton on front cover. This may be the same Burton who served as a spokeswoman for the Army’s John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center. Ink notation on the back cover. This NIPUB supersedes the NIPUB dated September 1979. On June 16 1775 just two days after sanctioning the formation of an Army the Continental Congress authorized the position of Quartermaster General. It also authorized a Commissary General. As the new Soldiers were gathering outside of Boston they required food shelter clothing and all of the necessities for sustaining an Army in the field. Two months later George Washington appointed Thomas Mifflin to be the first Quartermaster General. Congress and the nation were poorly prepared for the task of supporting the Continental Army. Without a viable national government the Army depended upon contributions from the states which were uneven at best. Even when food and supplies were available the Quartermasters often lacked the means to transport the goods to the troops. The miserable winter at Valley Forge is perhaps the best remembered example of hardships suffered by the Revolutionary War Soldiers. Nevertheless Thomas Mifflin and later Nathanael Greene created some semblance of order within the supply system. The United States Army Quartermaster Corps formerly the Quartermaster Department is a sustainment and former combat service support CSS branch of the United States Army. It is also one of three U.S. Army logistics branches the others being the Transportation Corps and the Ordnance Corps. The U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps mission is to support the development production acquisition and sustainment of general supply Mortuary Affairs subsistence petroleum and water and material and distribution management during peace and war to provide combat power to the U.S. Army. The officer in charge of the branch for doctrine training and professional development purposes is the Quartermaster General. The Quartermaster Corps is the U.S. Army's oldest logistics branch established 16 June 1775. On that date the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution providing for "one Quartermaster General of the grand army and a deputy under him for the separate army". In 1802 under President Thomas Jefferson the size of the US Army was reduced with the Quartermaster Department being disbanded. In its place the nation was divided into three departments each with its own agent and subordinates who were responsible for quartermaster functions within each Department The Quartermaster Corps was re-established in 1812. From 1775 to 1912 this organization was known as the Quartermaster Department. In 1912 Congress consolidated the former Subsistence Pay and Quartermaster Departments to create the Quartermaster Corps. Quartermaster units and soldiers have served in every U.S. military operation from the Revolutionary War to recent operations in Iraq Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan Operation Enduring Freedom. The Regimental Insignia was authorized in 1986 and revised in 1994 to the current insignia. The insignia is described as a gold color metal and enamel device 1 inch in height consisting of a gold eagle with wings spread and head lowered looking to his right and standing upon a wheel with a blue felloe set with thirteen gold stars having thirteen gold spokes and the hub white with a red center; superimposed on the wheel a gold sword and key crossed diagonally hilt and bow up all on a black background and resting upon a wreath of green laurel terminating at either side below the eagle's wings at the upper end of the sword and key. Attached below the device is a gold scroll inscribed SUPPORTING VICTORY in black. The original regimental insignia was all gold and approved on 31 March 1986. The design was changed on 7 June 1994 to add color to the insignia. The Regimental DUI is worn on the Soldier's right side above the name tag and any unit awards on the Army Service Uniform. The Branch Insignia was approved in its present form in 1913. The sword is characteristic of military forces and symbolized the Quartermaster Corps control of military supplies. The key is representative of the Corps traditional storekeeping function. The wheel is styled after a six-mule-wagon wheel and represents transportation and delivery of supplies. The wheel has thirteen spokes a red and white hub and a blue felloe the outer edge of the wheel embedded with thirteen gilt gold stars. The thirteen stars and spokes of the wheel represent the original colonies and the origin of the Corps which occurred during the Revolutionary War. The gilt gold eagle is the national bird and is symbolic of our nation. The colors red white and blue are the national colors. The Branch Insignia is worn on the lapel of the Army Service Uniform singly on a brass disk for Enlisted personnel and in pairs for Officers. ‎U. S. Army Topographic Command‎

‎West Point and Vicinity; Series V821S Stock No. V821SWESTPT other side is V8210S Edition 2-TPC Pictomap‎

‎Washington DC: U. S. Army Topographic Command c1971. 9-TPC Edition and 2-TPC Edition. Single sheet printed on both sides. Good. The format is approximately 25 inches by 25 inches. Folded so that there are 16 panels per side. The scale of the map is 1:25000. On one side the contour interval is 20 feet and on the other it is 50 feet. There is a Legend Key small map insets and a 100 meter reference. Map is in color. This is a photomap and there is a caution statement that base and features may be displaced particularly in areas of varying terrain heights. The Army Map Service AMS was the military cartographic agency of the United States Department of Defense from 1941 to 1968. On September 1 1968 the AMS was redesignated the U.S. Army Topographic Command USATC and continued as an independent organization until January 1 1972 when it was merged into the new Defense Mapping Agency DMA and redesignated as the DMA Topographic Center DMATC. On October 1 1996 DMA was folded into the National Imagery and Mapping Agency NIMA which was redesignated as the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency NGA in 2003. The major task of the Army Map Service was the compilation publication and distribution of military topographic maps and related products required by the Armed Forces of the United States. The AMS was also involved in the preparation of extraterrestrial maps of satellite and planetary bodies; the preparation of national intelligence studies; the establishment of world geodetic control networks by both satellite and conventional triangulation methods; and the logistic military planning of Corps of Engineer items. From the outbreak of the operations in the Vietnam War in December 1966 the Army Map Service printed and shipped more than 200 million maps. Mapmaking provided another area for engineer innovation in Vietnam. Up to date map and topographic information were key ingredients to military operations in Vietnam especially the placement of artillery fire. During the early stages of the war artillery units normally supported ground units from fixed positions into which ground control had been extended. Surveys enabled the artillery to ensure the accuracy of fire but as artillery units moved to more remote areas it became more difficult to support friendly units because surveys were lacking. In early 1967 Lt. Col. Arthur L. Benton the former chief of the Mapping and Intelligence Section of the Engineer Sections United States Army Vietnam who had returned to Vietnam on temporary duty from the Army Map Service in Washington D.C. developed a system known as photogrammetric positioning. By tying aerial photographs to base maps artillery surveyors could readily obtain azimuth and location of firing positions. Then working with the photographs and overprint of a map aerial observers could give accurate references to targets. Tests proved favorable and a system was in place after Operation Cedar Falls. The United States Military Academy West Point and grounds were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1960 due to the Revolutionary War history and the age and historic significance of the academy itself. The majority of the buildings in the central cadet area are historic. The West Point Military Reservation in Orange County is mostly in Highlands Town. The majority of that area is in the West Point census-designated place and portions extend into the Fort Montgomery CDP. Portions of the reservation extend into Woodbury and Cornwall Town. U. S. This reflects the state of the art the state of knowledge and the state of practice during a period of increasing U.S. operations during the Vietnam War. Boobytraps FM 5-31 Field Manual. chapters include Characteristics of boobytraps Use of Boobytraps Boobytrapping Equipment Construction techniques Miscellaneous Boobytraps and Boobytrap Detection and Removal. Includes topics such as introduction and principles of boobytraps basic doctrine planning and installation equipment firing devices demolition materials missile minefieldsstandard boobytraps improvised boobytraps and clearing and disarming methods. A booby trap is a device or setup that is intended to kill harm or surprise a person or animal unknowingly triggered by the presence or actions of the victim. As the word trap implies they sometimes have some form of bait designed to lure the victim towards it. At other times the trap is set to act upon trespassers that violate personal or restricted areas. The device can be triggered when the victim performs some type of everyday action e.g. opening a door picking something up or switching something on. They can also be triggered by vehicles driving along a road as in the case of victim-operated improvised explosive devices IEDs. Booby traps should not be confused with mantraps which are designed to catch a person. Lethal booby traps are often used in warfare particularly guerrilla warfare and traps designed to cause injury or pain are also sometimes used by criminals wanting to protect drugs or other illicit property and by some owners of legal property who wish to protect it from theft. ‎US. Army Engineer Nuclear Cratering Group U. S.‎

‎Isthmian Canal Studies 1964 Title from Front Cover; Annex III Appendix 1 Inclosure A Excavation with Nuclear Explosions PNE-2001‎

‎Livermore CA: U.S. Army Engineer Nuclear Cratering Group 1964. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Good. The format is approximately 8 inches by 10.5 inches. Various paginations approximately 120 pages. Illustrations figures tables tabular data. Ex-library copy with the usual library markings some blacked out. This is part of Plowshare--civil industrial and scientific used for nuclear explosives. The US Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group NCG program activities include: 1 cratering calibration of various geologic media and development of techniques designed to provide a desired crater geometry with chemical high-explosive detonations; 2 joint planning of and technical participation in AEC nuclear-excavation experiments; 3 development of data on the engineering properties of nuclear craters; 4 development of civil works nuclear construction technology; 5 accomplishment of engineering studies of nuclear construction feasibility; and 6execution of joint CE/AEC civil works nuclear-construction experiments. Four conceptual nuclear-construction applications have been identified as having a significant potential for accomplishment: 1 nuclear quarrying to produce rock fill or aggregate; 2 nuclear ejecta dam construction; 3 nuclear harbor construction; and 4 nuclear canal excavation. This inclosure described the design of the nuclear explosions required to excavate the channel for an Isthmian sea-level canal. The Columbian nuclear cue would use 262 devices with a total yield of 2709 megatons fired in 21 separate detonations. Project Plowshare was the overall United States program for the development of techniques to use nuclear explosives for peaceful construction purposes. The program was organized in June 1957 as part of the worldwide Atoms for Peace efforts. As part of the program 35 nuclear warheads were detonated in 27 separate tests. A similar program was carried out in the Soviet Union under the name Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy. Successful demonstrations of non-combat uses for nuclear explosives include rock blasting stimulation of tight gas chemical element manufacture unlocking some of the mysteries of the R-process of stellar nucleosynthesis and probing the composition of the Earth's deep crust creating reflection seismology vibroseis data which has helped geologists and follow-on mining company prospecting. The project's uncharacteristically large and atmospherically vented Sedan nuclear test also led geologists to determine that Barringer crater was formed as a result of a meteor impact and not from a volcanic eruption as had earlier been assumed. This became the first crater on Earth definitely proven to be from an impact event. Negative impacts from Project Plowshare's tests generated significant public opposition which eventually led to the program's termination in 1977. These consequences included tritiated water projected to increase by CER Geonuclear Corporation to a level of 2% of the then-maximum level for drinking water and the deposition of fallout from radioactive material being injected into the atmosphere before underground testing was mandated by treaty. Peaceful nuclear explosions PNEs are nuclear explosions conducted for non-military purposes. Proposed uses include excavation for the building of canals and harbors electrical generation the use of nuclear explosions to drive spacecraft and as a form of wide-area fracking. PNEs were an area of some research from the late 1950s into the 1980s primarily in the United States and Soviet Union. In the U.S. a series of tests were carried out under Project Plowshare. Some of the ideas considered included blasting a new Panama Canal constructing the proposed Nicaragua Canal the use of underground explosions to create electricity Project PACER and a variety of mining geological and radionuclide studies. The largest of the excavation tests was carried out in the Sedan nuclear test in 1962 which released large amounts of radioactive gas into the air. By the late 1960s public opposition to Plowshare was increasing and a 1970s study of the economics of the concepts suggested they had no practical use. Plowshare saw decreasing interest from the 1960s and was officially canceled in 1977. The Soviet program started a few years after the U.S. efforts and explored many of the same concepts under their Nuclear Explosions for the National Economy program. The program was more extensive eventually conducting 239 nuclear explosions. Some of these tests also released radioactivity including a significant release of plutonium into the groundwater and the polluting of an area near the Volga River. A major part of the program in the 1970s and 80s was the use of very small bombs to produce shock waves as a seismic measuring tool and as part of these experiments two bombs were successfully used to seal blown-out oil wells. The program officially ended in 1988. U.S. Army Engineer Nuclear Cratering Group paperback‎

This is followed by the Roster First Cavalry Division which gives unit name street address and home town and state. The 1st Cavalry Division initially organized in September 1921 at Fort Bliss Texas was serving on occupation duty in Japan when the Korean War began in the summer of 1950. On 18 July 1950 elements of the division went ashore at P'ohang-dong South Korea moving quickly westward to block the enemy along the main Taejon-Taegu corridor which led back to the ports on the Sea of Japan. With unrelenting pressure from the enemy the division withdrew to Kumch'on and later east of the Naktong River where it held part of the front near Taegu on the Pusan perimeter. During the month of August "The First Team" successfully countered five major North Korean attacks in that section. In early September the division launched an attack against the "Walled City" a series of high mountain ridges along the perimeter which the enemy repelled. On 15 September however the United Nations began a new offensive with an amphibious landing at Inch'on near Seoul; with the opening of the second front the 1st Cavalry Division began a drive northwest of Taegu. Six days later the division broke out of the perimeter and North Korean pressure in the south ended. Pursuit of the enemy followed and on 27 September the division met the 7th Infantry Division at Osan. From there the 1st Cavalry Division shifted north to the Kaesong area near the 38th Parallel the dividing line between North and South Korea. On 9 October the 1st Cavalry Division was ordered to take Kumch'on in North Korea which fell on 14 October. Shortly thereafter the division reached P'yongyang the North Korean capital. Elements of the division linked up with the 187th Airborne Infantry at Sunch'on and other elements turned southwest to Chinnamp'o the main port of North Korea. Oon 1 November a new more savage conflict began. Waves of enemy forces swept over the 1st Cavalry Division area near Unsan and the division fell back to a line between the coast and the Taedong River valley. By 12 December the division had withdrawn to only six miles north of Seoul and in January 1951 it occupied positions south of Seoul in the Ch'ungju area. Seoul had been captured but the enemy did not cross the Han River. When the enemy failed to follow up its recapture of Seoul the 1st Cavalry Division undertook a reconnaissance in force resulting in a limited offensive north and west of the capital. By the end of February "The First Team" had reached the Hongch'on area in the central front midway between Seoul and the Sea of Japan. In February the 1st Cavalry Division pushed to the Hwach'on Reservoir north of the 38th Parallel and then went into reserve. On 22 April the Chinese Communists began a new offensive to dislodge the UN forces and the division was given the mission of defending Seoul and the area north of the city. The division pushed northward and by the end of May it was again in North Korea. The 1st Cavalry Division's next assignment was to attack the "Iron Triangle" an area from P'yonggang southeast to Ch'orwon and southwest to Kumhwa which served as a marshalling zone for the enemy. In December 1951 the 45th Infantry Division replaced the 1st Cavalry Division which then began redeploying to Hokkaido Japan. The last element of the 1st arrived in Japan in mid-January 1952. ‎United States Army, The Ordnance School‎

‎The Ordnance Company Medium Maintenance The Ordnance Battalion Maintenance; Ordnance School Text OS 9-25‎

‎Aberdeen Proving Ground MD: The Ordnance School 1941. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Four-hole punched and held together with two two pronged clips. Good. Format is approximately 8 inches by 13 inches four-hole punched with two two pronged clips holding the text together. 3iii-vii 250 pages. Three pages of errata sheets. 18 appendices. 50 Figures. Printed single-sided only. Cover worn torn and soiled with some page wear and soiling noted. Pencil marks and notations on cover and some pages. The major portion of this text appears to be an early version of Field Manual No. 9-10 The Ordnance Company -Medium Maintenance; The Ordnance Battalion--Maintenance. It was apparently expected to be issued in July 1941 the the date of issue is blank. FM 9-10 Ordnance Field Manual Ordnance Field Maintenance was published on April 20 1942. There are substantial differences between this text and what was officially published as FM 9-10. This publication was intended solely for use as an Ordnance School text for instruction purposes only. It was not intended for general distribution to agencies or personnel outside the Ordnance training Center at Aberdeen Proving ground Md. It is reasonable to conclude that this instructional text was also a draft text for what would eventually become FM 9-10 and that the experience gained in its use at The Ordnance School contributed to the development of material changes. As such then this early version not labeled as a draft provides a significant and perhaps unique insight into the development of Ordnance doctrine training and practice at the Company and Battalion level at the time when the United States entered the Second World War. One page on Machine Gun Repairs to the M9197A1 laid in. The purpose of this manual was to present a coordinated and complete picture of the problem of ordnance field maintenance together with a logical solution of that problem. While this manual will be found to be helpful as a reference for operation of the maintenance organizations in garrison it was intended primarily as a guide for use in field operations. There are included in the various parts of this manual a discussion of a typical ordnance field shop and a method of conducting operations; a discussion of details pertaining to a typical maintenance company; and discussions of particular problems in ordnance field maintenance as they are encountered and solved. Except where obviously necessary in the interests of uniformity throughout all ordnance service it is not intended that this manual shall impose unnecessary restrictions on the imagination and initiative of ordnance personnel responsible for the operation of the units covered by this manual. On the contrary it is intended that the thoughts and imagination of such personnel will be stimulated to evolve more satisfactory solutions to the problems of ordnance field service. The organization of ordnance maintenance in the field army is based on the principle of progressive increases in available maintenance facilities from front to rear. The equipment and personnel assigned to each echelon are designed to carry the normal load of that echelon plus a certain peak load of the subordinate echelons. In Part I. The Ordnance Company - Medium Maintenance there are Chapters on General; Organization and Equipment; Operations; Duties of Individuals; and Administrative Details. Part II. The Ordnance Battalion Maintenance has Chapters on General and Operations. A list of appendices follow and are in turn followed by the list of Figures. There are specific discussions of ordnance weapons and vehicles and materiel. There is significant discussion of the inspection of ordnance materiel especially ammunition. The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases USAMRIID; pronounced: you-SAM-rid is the U.S Army's main institution and facility for defensive research into countermeasures against biological warfare. It is located on Fort Detrick Maryland near Washington D.C. and is a subordinate lab of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command USAMRDC headquartered on the same installation. USAMRIID is the only U.S. Department of Defense DoD laboratory equipped to study highly hazardous viruses at Biosafety Level 4 within positive pressure personnel suits. USAMRIID employs both military and civilian scientists as well as highly specialized support personnel totaling around 800 people. In the 1950s and '60s USAMRIID and its predecessor unit pioneered unique state-of-the-art biocontainment facilities which it continues to maintain and upgrade. Investigators at its facilities frequently collaborate with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention the World Health Organization and major biomedical and academic centers worldwide. USAMRIID was the first bio-facility of its type to research the Ames strain of anthrax determined through genetic analysis to be the bacterium used in the 2001 anthrax attacks. By U.S. Department of Defense DoD directive as well as additional U.S. Army guidance USAMRIID performs its "biological agent medical defense" research in support of the needs of the three military services. This mission and all work done at USAMRIID must remain within the spirit and letter of both President Richard Nixon's 1969 and 1970 Executive Orders renouncing the use of biological and toxin weapons and the U.N. Biological Weapons Convention of 1972. During the period of Desert Shield and Desert Storm 1990-91 USAMRIID provided the DoD with expert advice and products vaccines and drugs to ensure an effective medical response if a medical defense were required. USAMRIID scientists trained and equipped six special laboratory teams for rapid identification of potential BW agents which fortunately never appeared. Following the conflict USAMRIID physicians and engineers were key members of a United Nations Special Commission UNSCOM Inspection Team that evaluated the BW capabilities in Iraq during the 1990s. ‎United States. Department of the Army, Headquarters‎

‎Tactical Nuclear Operations; Field Manual FM 100-30‎

‎Washington DC: U.S. Army Headquarters 1996. Presumed First Edition First printing thus. Wraps. Good/No dust jacket issued. Three-hole punched and staplebound. Distribution Restriction--authorized to U.S. Government agencies only. Various paginations approx. 100 pages. Figures. Glossary. References. Index. Cover creased and has some wear and soiling. This manual establishes Army doctrine for operations in a nuclear environment and details the doctrine for integrating nuclear consideration into all other aspects of the battlefield. It also describes the Army's role in nominating tragets at corps and above levels and protecting the force from the effects of a nuclear weapons detonation. Nuclear employment in a theater of operations has theater strategic operational and tactical results; execution has national strategic implications. The corps' role is to function at either the tactical or operational levels of war. At the tactical level the corps accomplishes missions as Field Manual FM 199-15 describes. At the operational level when directed and augmented the corps functions as either the Army force ARFOR the joint force land component command JFLCC or a joint task force JTF. By viewing the corps in its many possible roles the reader can also discern nuclear procedures for echelons above corps EAC and joint missions. This manual can help educate and train commanders and staff at corps and operations levels in nuclear operations and educate and train divisions in nuclear force protection. It is used with Joint Publications JP 3-12.1 3-12.2 SRD or 3-12.3 and serves as the bridge between joint and Army doctrine. It is also uses with FM 25-50 which contains training doctrine for nuclear survivability. Among the topics addressed are: Nuclear Weapons; Joint Nuclear Doctrine; Deterrence Proliferation Weapons Effects Survivability Countermeasures Nuclear Operations Targeting Battlefield Operating Systems Nuclear Support Nuclear Tactics; Tactical Operations; Military Training; Nuclear Combat; Theater Nuclear; Nuclear Environment FM-100-30 Mobile Defense Command and Control Decision-Making Collateral-Damage and Troop Safety. A tactical nuclear weapon TNW or non-strategic nuclear weapon NSNW is a nuclear weapon that is designed to be used on a battlefield in military situations mostly with friendly forces in proximity and perhaps even on contested friendly territory. Generally smaller in explosive power they are defined in contrast to strategic nuclear weapons which are designed mostly to be targeted at the enemy interior far away from the war front against military bases cities towns arms industries and other hardened or larger-area targets to damage the enemy's ability to wage war. No tactical nuclear weapon has ever been used in a combat situation. Tactical nuclear weapons include gravity bombs short-range missiles artillery shells land mines depth charges and torpedoes which are equipped with nuclear warheads. Also in this category are nuclear armed ground-based or shipborne surface-to-air missiles SAMs and air-to-air missiles. Small two-man portable or truck-portable tactical weapons such as the Special Atomic Demolition Munition and the Davy Crockett recoilless rifle have been developed but the difficulty of combining sufficient yield with portability could limit their military utility. In wartime such explosives could be used for demolishing "chokepoints" to enemy offensives such as at tunnels narrow mountain passes and long viaducts. There is no exact definition of the "tactical" category in terms of range or yield of the nuclear weapon. The yield of tactical nuclear weapons is generally lower than that of strategic nuclear weapons but larger ones are still very powerful and some variable-yield warheads serve in both roles. Some tactical nuclear weapons have specific features meant to enhance their battlefield characteristics such as variable yield which allow their explosive power to be varied over a wide range for different situations or enhanced radiation weapons which are meant to maximize ionizing radiation exposure and to minimize blast effects. Tactical nuclear weapons were a large part of the peak nuclear weapons stockpile levels during the Cold War. U.S. Army Headquarters paperback‎

Format is 4 inches by 8.25 inches folded into thirds with printing on both sides. Some weakness/tearing at the folds. Front panels are: Radiation Rules of Thumb five listed Nuclear Strike Warning STRIKWARN believed to be the front panel due to alphanumeric at the bottom Radiation Transmission Factors for Fallout. Back panels are: NBC 1. Nuclear Burst Observers' Report listing items B through M with asterisks for information to be transmitted immediately after nuclear explosion Sample Effective Downwind Message and Sample NBC 3. Fallout Warning Message. The current successor to Nuclear Strike Warning STRIKWARN is NBC Warning and Reporting System NBCWRS. The primary means of warning units of an actual or predicted nuclear hazard is the NBCWRS. It is a key in limiting the effects of nuclear attacks. The NBCWRS allows units to determine required protective measures and plan operations. Units take action depending on the mission and type of hazard present. If the mission allows affected units alter plans to avoid the hazard. Otherwise the units upgrade protective measures and occupy or cross the hazard area. Units use the NBCWRS as battlefield intelligence. It is consistent with elements of previous related systems. <br /> <br /> Standard NBC Reports<br /> <br /> The NBCWRS to support radiological defense consists of five reports. Each is standardized by ATP 45/STANAG 2103 and the US Message Text Format USMTF. The United States and its NATO British Canadian and Australian ABCA allies use the same message formats. This improves the accuracy comprehension and interoperability of the system. It also increases the speed of dissemination and submission. The five standard reports used to exchange information are--<br /> <br /> NBC l--Initial report giving basic data compiled at unit level.<br /> NBC 2--Report used for passing evaluated data.<br /> NBC 3--Report used for immediate warning of predicted contamination and hazard areas.<br /> NBC 4--Report used for passing monitoring and survey results.<br /> NBC 5--Report used for passing information on areas of actual contamination. Glossary. Reproducible Forms. This we understand was the Army's last and most comprehensive word on how troops would confront the effects of nuclear weapons on the battlefield. IT was also jointly issued with the Marine Corps since their troops could also be expected to be on the ground in a 'post-detonation' operational environment. Much of the emphasis is on establishing and communicating the spatial extent of fallout from adversarial nuclear weapons explosions and understanding its impact on battlefield operations. This really is the definitive work on the subject at the end of the Twentieth Century. Included also is AREA PREDICTOR RADIOLOGICAL FALLOUT ABC-M5A2 a 24"X39" flexible translucent overlay sheet with stenciled templates for first-order fallout area delineation on US Army maps; its use is fully described in the FM 3-3-1 manual. The mission of the Chemical Corps is to prepare the Army to survive and win in a nuclear environment by developing doctrine organizations training products and equipment for nuclear defense and nuclear retaliation. Minimizing the impact of nuclear weapons through contamination avoidance protection and decontamination. Employing smoke and flame are part of the operational options. This manual FM 3-3-1 defines and clarified the entire process of nuclear contamination avoidance. It details the NBC Warning and Reporting System NBCWRS how to locate and identify nuclear contamination and how to operate in and around nuclear contamination. The Rock Island Arsenal crest is on the front panel. It is unusual for ephemeral items such as this to survive several decades in such good condition. The original museum was opened with donations from the 1904 World's Fair and the American Civil War ordnance warehouse. The exhibits are about the people in Arsenal Island's history its manufacturing processes and the equipment it has produced. There is a large display of more than 1100 firearms that were used by the military both from overseas or within the United States. Five of these weapons were used at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Twenty-five percent of the collection's small firearms are not on display including three rare rifles. Jodean Murdock education curator says that the firearms get the most attention from visitors. The museum has a research center located in its basement containing books maps manuals and magazines among others. A Children's Discovery Room was created with uniforms and hats for children to try on. The museum collections were reduced in 2016 with pieces being moved to an Army warehouse. The Rock Island Arsenal comprises 946 acres located on Arsenal Island originally known as Rock Island on the Mississippi River between the cities of Davenport Iowa and Rock Island Illinois. It lies within the state of Illinois. Rock Island was previously used as the summer camp site for Sauk Native Americans and the dispute over tribal ownership led to the Black Hawk War of 1832 after the primary leader of the Sauk Black Hawk. It is now home of First Army headquarters and the US Army's Center of Excellence for Additive Manufacturing. The island was originally established as a government site in 1816 with the building of Fort Armstrong. It is now the largest government-owned weapons manufacturing arsenal in the United States. It has manufactured military equipment and ordnance since the 1880s. In 1919-1920 one hundred of the Anglo-American or Liberty Mark VIII tanks were manufactured although too late for World War I. It is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Established as both an arsenal and a center for the manufacture of leather accoutrements and field gear today it provides manufacturing logistics and base support services for the Armed Forces. The Arsenal is the only active U.S. Army foundry and manufactures ordnance and equipment including artillery gun mounts recoil mechanisms small arms aircraft weapons sub-systems grenade launchers weapons simulators and a host of associated components. Some of the Arsenal's most successful products include the M198 and M119 towed howitzers and the M1A1 gun mount. About 250 military personnel and 6000 civilians work there. The Rock Island Arsenal Museum was established on July 4 1905. It is the second-oldest US Army Museum in the US after the West Point Museum. The museum has been closed twice during World War I and World War II to provide more space for manufacturing facilities. Exhibits interpret the history of Rock Island Arsenal and the Union prison camp during the American Civil War and the site's role as a military industrial facility. The museum contains the second-largest collection of small arms weapons in the U.S. Army and an outdoor vehicle display. ‎Department of the Army, Headquarters‎

‎Fallout Prediction; Field Manual FM 3-22‎

‎Washington DC: Department of the Army 1973. First Edition thus later 1975 printing. Wraps. Good. Format is approximately 8.25 inches by 11 inches. Three-hole punched and staplebound. 80 pages. Illustrations graphs nomograms diagrams formulae. References. Cover has some wear and soiling. A few pencil marks noted inside. This manual supersedes TM 3-210 3 December 1967 including all changes. Its contents address Introduction to Fallout Prediction Detailed Fallout Prediction Simplified Fallout Predictions Fallout Prediction for Atomic Demolition Munitions Friendly Nuclear Strike Warning Message and References. This manual provides guidance in the preparation of detailed and simplified fallout predictions to commanders of all echelons within the Army and provides procedural guidance for those persons operating the Chemical Biological and Radiological Element CBRE. The material in this manual is applicable to nuclear warfare conditions. This manual is in consonance with the international standardization agreements STANAG referenced within this manual. The need for a fallout prediction system stems form the large-area radiological contamination hazard that can develop from fallout-producing nuclear detonations. This large-area hazard is capable of producing mass casualties is its presence is not detected or if commanders at all echelons do not understand its effects and take action to minimize these effects. Thus fallout has a considerable impact on military planning and operations. Nuclear fallout or fallout is the residual radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere following a nuclear blast so called because it "falls out" of the sky after the explosion and the shock wave have passed. It commonly refers to the radioactive dust and ash created when a nuclear weapon explodes. The amount and spread of fallout is a product of the size of the weapon and the altitude at which it is detonated. Fallout may get entrained with the products of a pyrocumulus cloud and fall as black rain rain darkened by soot and other particulates which fell within 30-40 minutes of the Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This radioactive dust usually consisting of fission products mixed with bystanding atoms that are neutron-activated by exposure is a form of radioactive contamination. Now the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale INES is the primary form of categorizing the potential health and environmental effects of a nuclear or radiological event and communicating it to the public. The need for a fallout prediction system stems from the large-area radiological hazard that develops from fallout-producing nuclear bursts. Contamination has a large impact on military planning and operations. This hazard produces mass casualties if its presence is not detected and actions taken to minimize the radiological hazards. Commanders at all echelons must understand its effects and take action to minimize those effects. There are many occasions when a commander will require a fallout prediction. Three examples follow: When the commander plans to use a nuclear weapon that lacks 99-percent probability of being fallout safe or whenever a contact backup fuze is used a prestrike fallout prediction is prepared as part of the target analysis. Information may indicate that fallout is occurring or that fallout probably will occur from a nuclear burst friendly or enemy. In this case a fallout prediction is required to enable the commander to warn higher adjacent and subordinate units. When a fallout-producing burst occurs an evaluating procedure is begun that will answer the commander's questions about the hazard. However a time lag of several hours to a day or more may occur between the time of burst and the availability of measured data from radiological monitoring and/or survey. This delays evaluation of the actual hazard. During this time lag the fallout prediction area of expected hazard or at best the fallout prediction supplemented by measured radiation data may be the only available information for estimating the effects of the radiation hazard on tactical operations or plans. This information is significant in that it will enable the commander to avoid the contamination if possible In both simplified and detailed prediction a zone of primary hazard Zone I and one of secondary hazard Zone II are predicted. These zones are defined as areas where exposed unprotected personnel may receive militarily significant total doses of nuclear radiation within four hours after arrival of fallout. These doses may result in a reduction in combat effectiveness. Department of the Army paperback‎

‎Area Predictor Radiological Fallout ABC-M52A; For Instructions on use see FM 3-22 and TM 3-6665-304-10‎

‎Washington DC: United States Army c1975. Presumed First Edition First issuance thus. Clears plastic/vinyl sheet with printing on one side only. Fair. Overall dimensions: 40 inches long by 23½ inches wide. RARE surviving copy of this map overlay. This has been folded and refolded. There has been some transfer of printing to otherwise clear portions of the plastic sheet. Information is presented in red purple orange yellow blue and black colors. Scale is 1:250000 kilometers and 1 to 50000 kilometers. Show yields of 2kt 5kt 30kt 100kt 300kt and 1MT. On the right side is a yield scale for 150kt to 1 MT. To its left is another scale in KM from 4 to 1000 with a designation of DWD at the top. Further to its left is a smaller scale in KM from 8 to 160 with the designation of EWS at the top. The ABC-M5A2 radiological fallout predictor is a transparent device used to outline the zones of hazard resulting from surface bursts for preselected yield groups. The ABC-M5A2 fallout predictor is composed of two simplified predictors and a nomogram for determining the downwind distance of Zone I. One simplified predictor is drawn to a scale of 1: 50000; the other predictor is drawn to a scale of 1: 250000. This predictor contains six preselected yield groups A B C D E and F. All you need to know to use this is: Wind speed and direction location of ground zero and actual or estimated with your ABC-M4A1 yield of the nuclear weapon. This overlay is used for surface or low air burst weapons. Nuclear fallout is the residual radioactive material propelled into the upper atmosphere following a nuclear blast so called because it "falls out" of the sky after the explosion and the shock wave has passed. Fallout comes in two varieties. The first is a small amount of carcinogenic material with a long half-life. The second depending on the height of detonation is a large quantity of radioactive dust and sand with a short half-life. All nuclear explosions produce fission products un-fissioned nuclear material and weapon residues vaporized by the heat of the fireball. These materials are limited to the original mass of the device but include radioisotopes with long lives. When the nuclear fireball does not reach the ground this is the only fallout produced. Its amount can be estimated from the fission-fusion design and yield of the weapon. United States Army unknown‎

Format is approximately 7 inches by 8.5 inches. Unpaginated 16 pages plus covers. Illustrations. Reading List. Illustrated front and back covers. Inside the back cover is a drawing of the patch which was issued to military personnel who participated in the Manhattan Project. This provides an overview of the Trinity Site and the first atomic test event. Major headings are: Radiation at Trinity Site; Typical radiation exposures for Americans; Trinity Site National Historic Landmark with subsections on The Manhattan Project The Theory Building a test site Jumbo Bomb Assembly The test After the explosion It's the Schmidt house and Afterwards. There is also a brief section on the White Sands Missile Range. Laid in is a single sheet approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches printed on one side presenting the Entry Rules of which there are thirteen numbered items numbers 10 to 13 are not technically a rules but guidance and direction. The sheet has been folded in half to fit inside the booklet. Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear weapon. It was conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. on July 16 1945 as part of the Manhattan Project. The test was conducted in the Jornada del Muerto desert about 35 miles southeast of Socorro New Mexico on what was then the USAAF Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range now part of White Sands Missile Range. The only structures originally in the vicinity were the McDonald Ranch House and its ancillary buildings which scientists used as a laboratory for testing bomb components. A base camp was constructed and there were 425 people present on the weekend of the test. The code name "Trinity" was assigned by J. Robert Oppenheimer the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory inspired by the poetry of John Donne. The test was of an implosion-design plutonium device informally nicknamed "The Gadget" of the same design as the Fat Man bomb later detonated over Nagasaki Japan on August 9 1945. The complexity of the design required a major effort from the Los Alamos Laboratory and concerns about whether it would work led to a decision to conduct the first nuclear test. The test was planned and directed by Kenneth Bainbridge. Fears of a fizzle did lead to the construction of a steel containment vessel called Jumbo that could contain the plutonium allowing it to be recovered although ultimately this was not used in the test. A rehearsal was held on May 7 1945 in which 108 short tons 96 long tons; 98 t of high explosive spiked with radioactive isotopes were detonated. The Gadget's detonation released the explosive energy of about 25 kilotons of TNT 100 TJ. Observers included Vannevar Bush James Chadwick James Conant Thomas Farrell Enrico Fermi Richard Feynman Leslie Groves Robert Oppenheimer Geoffrey Taylor Richard Tolman Edward Teller and John von Neumann. The test site was declared a National Historic Landmark district in 1965 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places the following year.
