He entered the U.S. Army Medical Corps in December 1884 and served with the 7th Army Corps in Cuba 1898-1902. He was Chief Surgeon under Gen. Fitzhugh Lee and Superintendent of the Department of Charities under General Leonard Wood. He also worked with the Reed Yellow Fever Board. USAAS Association paperback
