‎Benjamin Stoddert Ewell sixteenth president of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg Virginia. Autograph Note Signed ‘Benj. S. Ewell’ to ‘Mr. Walter G. Webster’ in response to a request for an autograph.‎

‎7 June 1872; on letterhead of the College of William and Mary Williamsburg Virginia. William and Mary owes its survival to Ewell: he rebuilt it from ruins after the American Civil War and every morning during several years of closure he is said to have rung the assembly bell to keep the memory of the college fresh. The present item is 1p landscape 8vo. It is in poor condition on brittle high-acidity paper with significant chipping to all the edges except the bottom one which has resulted in the loss of a few letters of text and to the engraved illustration of the college in the letterhead. The letter reads: ‘Mr. Walter G. Webster / Dear Sir / With the purpose of complying with your request so politely made and not that I think my autograph worth notice or preservation I write and remain / Your obedient Servant / Benj. S. Ewell / President of the College of William & Mary’. 7 June 1872; on letterhead of the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. unknown‎

‎Sir Richard Airey: the man who issued the order for the Charge of the Light Brigade. Autograph Letter Signed to ‘Mrs. Gardiner’ describing the ‘escape by a miracle’ of ‘Gardiner’ after a dangerous fall from his horse.‎

‎29 June 1865; ‘Horseguards’ Horse Guards London. on embossed government letterhead. See his entry in the Oxford DNB: ‘Following Raglan's instructions he wrote out the order which led to the fateful charge of the light brigade on 25 October 1854 but unfortunately in the heat of battle kept no duplicate. Subsequently he had to request a copy from Lieutenant-General Lord Lucan the cavalry division's commander to whom the order was addressed and who strongly resented implications that he was at fault. In writing and in person Airey attempted to placate Lucan reputedly arguing that “it is nothing to Chillianwallahâ€â€™. At the time of writing Airey was Colonel of the 17th Leicestershire Foot. Hart’s Army List does not name any ‘Gardiner’ on his staff. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with minor damage at fore-edge of second leaf. Signed ‘Richard Airey’. Minuted on reverse of second leaf. He is ‘so anxious to hear how Gardiner is going on’ that he is sure she will pardon him for troubling her ‘with this line of enquiry’. He is ‘in quiet hopes & belief that he has escaped from his most dangerous fall with only a very severe Shake - requiring only time & rest to be quite right again -’. He was ‘close to him at the moment of the accident’ and was ‘never more alarmed - He appeared to escape by a miracle -’. Gardiner ‘showed the greatest courage - & selfpossession’. Had it not been for those round him he would have ‘remounted & resumed his duties’ ‘directly he came to himself’. ‘He never let go his horse & it was with difficulty he at the last surrendered his bridle!’ He ends in the hope that he will be ‘relieved by one word regarding his state’. 29 June 1865; ‘Horseguards’ [Horse Guards, London.], on embossed government letterhead. unknown‎

‎General Sir Andrew Francis Barnard (1773-1855), distinguished Anglo-Irish officer in the British Army, decorated for his service‎

‎General Sir Andrew Francis Barnard army officer and courtier. Autograph Letter Signed ‘A F Barnard’ to ‘Augustus’ providing information regarding pictures in the royal collection and ‘the Clue to their History’.‎

‎18 December 1842; Canford i.e. Canford House Dorsetshire. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. From 1821 to the end of his life Barnard served as a courtier notably as Equerry to King George IV and it would appear that the present item is written in response to an enquiry made to the recipient of the letter regarding paintings in the royal collection. He writes from Camford House where Queen Adelaide widow of William IV had taken up residence. 4pp 12mo. On bifolium with thin mourning border. In fair condition on aged paper. Folded twice. Begins: ‘The three Ladies in the Picture of the Prince of Wales playing on the Violoncello are his three sisters viz. the afterwards Dutchess sic of Brunswick the Princess Amelia I forget who the third married but will let you know tomorrow - The Prince is evidently stepping out of tune and working away in true Amateur style Barnard was himself a Governor of the Royal Academy of Music this is perceptible in his attitude & were it not the young Lady with a book in her hand shews it by her Countenance and by her stopping her ears’. He considers the picture ‘a very clever one’ and attributes it to ‘Nollekins the father of the Sculptor’ i.e. ‘Old Nollekins’ Joseph Francis Nollekins 1702-1748. In ‘the picture of Charles the Second dancing with the Queen of Bohemia at the Ball given at the Hague by the States general’ he has ‘made out many of the figures’ and has also done so ‘at the one representing the Time with a Club drinking punch and Port - the one opposite where the Prince is peeping thro the door half open has the names of all the parties written on the back of it’. If the enquirer ‘wants information about any of the others I know a little about most of them and should be happy to communicate all that I have learned to any one about to print as it is a great pity that the Clue to their History should be lost’. 18 December 1842; Canford [i.e. Canford House, Dorsetshire]. unknown‎

‎Captain George Jones (1786-1869), RA, Librarian and acting President of the Royal Academy, and army officer, close friend and ex‎

‎‘I feel rather as a brother than as a client’. Captain George Jones RA Librarian of the Royal Academy. Autograph Letter Signed ‘George Jones’ to his close friend Sir Francis Chantrey explaining his embarrassment at selling him a painting.‎

‎Without date or place but before Chantrey's death in 1841 and probably from London. See the entries for Jones and Chantry in the Oxford DNB. 3pp 12mo. On bifolium. An interesting letter of 39 lines with text intact in poor condition aged and with closed tears and discoloration from tape used in repair and ink blot to first page. The surname of the recipient is not given but the close friendship between the two men Jones published a memoir of Chantrey in 1849 puts Chantrey’s identity beyond doubt. Begins: ‘Very dear Sir Francis / Your kind note is duly appreciated and all you do tends to my happiness altho’ it occasionally embarrasses my conduct; in the present instance I deeply feel your kindness in cherishing the pursuit that affords me pleasure but your dony so makes me feel as if I were receiving too great a testimony of your good will’. He is aware that it is ‘impertinent’ for him to ‘judge’ for Sir Francis but he has ‘permitted me to such a station of familiarity that I feel rather as a brother than as a client’. He would far rather his picture were in Sir Francis’s possession than anyone else’s and offer it to him ‘most willingly’ as a ‘testimonium amicitiae’ but he ‘dare not - therefore if it be your will send me one hundred Guineas and I will write you a formal answer by which you will learn what you are to name if my professional fee be demanded -’. If Sir Francis will indulge him by ‘acceding to my wish in this particular’ he will be ‘completely satisfied and this I affirm with the most complete sincerity of heart’ last eleven words underlined. A hundred guineas would have meant nothing to Chantrey; according to the DNB his estate was worth £150000. Without date or place, but before Chantrey's death in 1841, and probably from London. unknown‎

‎['A Tommy'; Mesopotamia Campaign, British Army, First World War; Iraq; Indian Army; Ottoman Turks]:‎

‎The Campaign in Mesopotamia British Army First World War. Duplicated Typescript apparently contemporary of satirical poem by British soldier by ‘A Tommy’ titled ‘Alphabet of Mesopotamia’.‎

‎Without date or place but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. This poem is said to be an earlier work by ‘A Tommy’ the pseudonymous author of the collection ‘If I Goes West’ published in London by Harrap in 1918. WorldCat has no entries to support a second claim: that the present poem was published in 1917 with the subtitle ‘Verses written by a “Tommy†who has fought suffered and triumphed in Mesopotamia and is still on active service there’. While there is no indication that the poem has ever been published in its entirety extracts from it appeared in ‘The Bystander’ 27 November 1916; and ‘The Near East’ 6 July 1917; the latter headed ‘An Alphabet from Mesopotamia’ being preceded by the following: ‘A member of our Fighting Forces in Mesopotamia has composed some verses which he entitles “ The Alphabet of Mesopotamia.†Through the kindness of a correspondent we are allowed to reproduce here some specimens’. There may also be a reference in Catherine W. Reilly’s 1978 bibliography ‘English Poetry of the First World War’. Duplicated typescript titled ‘ALPHABET OF MESOPOTAMIA.’ 2pp foolscap 8vo. Text complete on two leaves of air mail paper glued together. Apparently contemporary and with the look of an item that has been handed around the mess room. Twenty-six four-line stanzas: one for each letter of the alphabet apart from a joint stanza for S and T and ending with an ‘ENVOI’. The first stanza reads: ‘ “A†Was an apple that grew so they say In the Garden of Eden down Qurnah way Till Eve came along and ate it one day And got thrown out of Mesopotamia.’ The poem includes the following stanzas: ‘ “F†Stands for Fritz who flies in the sky To bring down the brute we’ve many a try But the shells that we shoot seem to all pass him by And fall --- on Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “J†Is the jam with the label that lies And states that in Paris it won the first prize But out here we use it for catching the flies That swarm in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “U†Is the Lake we call Umm-el-Brahm And guards our flanks from all possible karm sic And waters Gorringe’s Barley Farm In the middle of Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “V†Is the Victory we won at Dujailah I heard of it first from a friend who’s a sailor Who read it in Reuter’s on board a mahela On the Tigris in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “W†Stands for the wonder and pain With which we regard the infirm and insane Old Indian Generals who guide the campaign Which we’re waging in Mesopotamia.’ ‘ “Y†Is the yearning we feel every day For a passage to Basra and thence to Bombay If we get there we’ll see that we stay right away From this wilderness - Mesopotamia.’ Without date or place, but apparently written in Mesopotamia in late 1916. unknown‎

He thanks her for her kindness ‘in the midst of your great sorrow’ in writing to inform the Robertses of her husband’s death. ‘We have often talked of you both and wondered where you were living.’ He had thought it was ‘somewhere in the valley of the Thames at least I thought you told me so when last I met you both walking in Regent Street - some 10 years ago’. After a brief comment on Tierney’s ill health he recalls how ‘He Alfred Torrens and I sat next to each other at Mills School. Torrens died a few weeks ago and now I am the only one left.’ He ends by sending his and his wife’s condolences and in a postscript signed ‘R’ asks to be informed ‘should you come to London’.
