Lord John Manners Marquis of Granby army officer after whom many English pubs are named. Autograph Letter Signed 'John Manners' regarding the broken health of one Lieutenant Hawkins and his inability to rejoin his regiment in Jamaica.
Parliament Street London . 23 August 1770. 1p. 4to. In fair condition aged and worn with fraying to edges and loss at one corner from the opening of the seal. There is a faint pencil note on three lines in another hand at the foot of the letter. The letter reads: 'Having considerd Lt Hawkins situation and the effect the Climate of Jamaica has had upon him – I am of opinion that He is totally unable to join his Regiment and there is great reason to fear his health will never be such as to enable him to do duty with it in that Island John Manners Parliament St. Augst. 23d. 1770'. At the time of writing Manners was a month away from hiis death. He had relinquished the position of Commander in Chief of the Forces in the previous year but still held those of Master-General of the Ordnance and Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards. The recipient's name is not decipherable but he appears to have been a royal equerry. Blakeney hopes that he 'got safe home last night' and thanks him 'for giving me the pleasure of your Company'. He is enclosing a letter from Sir John Wilson 1780-1856 'who is forwarding an application from Mr Ferrier the Quarter Master of this Establishment in favour of an application to obtain admission into the Cambridge '. He asks if he 'might take an opportunity of showing it to His Royal Highness'. He ends by describing Ferrier as 'an excellent man' who 'can be fully depended upon in the opinion he has given'. Begins: 'The acceptance by the enemy of the terms of the Armistice laid down by the Allies is a suitable moment at which to summarise the work of the VI Corps since the 21st of August 1918. On that date the Guards 2nd and 3rd Divisions assaulted the position where the enemy had been finally checked after his March offensive and broke through it the brunt of this attack falling on the 3rd and Guards Divsions. Two days later the 62nd Division joined the Corps. The enemy stubbornly opposed every year of our further advance eastward but was forced back to the ST. QUENTIN CANAL and the HINDENBURG Defence System.' Concludes: 'To all Ranks of the VI Corps I tender my sincere thanks. Docketed and with the following note above the text of the letter: 'From Lieut Col George Napier To Mr. Danl. Flexney written with his left hand after the loss of his right Arm in battle in the Peninsular.' The letter reads: 'Sir I take the liberty of asking you if by chance any box or parcel was left at your house in which papers might be put as I have lost some Bonds or mislaid them. I had them before I left Bays Water but where I put them or what is become of them I am quite ignorant & merely write in case you may recollect my ever having mentioned them to you; I am glad to hear Mrs. Flexney is better & sincerely wishing her a good recovery I remain Sir Your Obedt. I have been looking into the Dukes Wellington's dispatches since I received your letter but cannot find any mention of them as yet I have a faint recollection of Colin Campbell having first mentioned it when the Dukes head quarters were near Elvas durinf the Ist Siege of Badajos. You will be happy to hear that our most gracious and kind Mistress is in excellent health see image for text at this point Postscript I have foundthe Eagle in page 78 - vol 8 of the Duke's despatches". Note: "Wilson" was perhaps "General Sir Robert Thomas Wilson 17 August 1777 – 9 May 1849 was a British general and politician who served in Flanders Egypt the Iberian Peninsula Prussia and was seconded to the Imperial Russian Army in 1812. The agent details the expense of travel for "Miss Pirrie" Pirrie's use of a coupon baggage allowance for S.S. Arcadia enclosing a traveller's Guide not present concluding with stamped signature "Henry King & Co."; B. Concerning the Bill of lading for Pirrie's "3 cases" shipped by the S.S. Coromandel. A paragraph asking for an Invoice is crossed out and a sentence added: "The goods have been duly cleared and forwarded". Note from source of the letters: "F.W. Pirrie joined the Indian Army Survey dept and eventually rose to the rank of Brevet Colonel. He fought in the Chitral operation 1895 and against the Turks in the First World War being mentioned in despatches on six occasions. He was involved in the Survey of India and contributed to its reports. He also served on the Mount Everest Committees of 1920-24. The Church Army still active today was founded in 1882 as a Church of England equivalent to the Methodists’ Salvation Army. From the papers of the recipient Wilfred Seymour De Winton of Haverfordwest. 3pp 12mo. On a bifolium of grey paper. In good condition lightly aged. Signed ‘W Carlile / Hon. Chief Sec.’ To the left of the signature in the bottom-left of the recto of the second leaf is a purple ink stamp of the following: ‘WRITTEN BY ONE OF OUR POOR STRUGGLING LABOUR HOME BROTHERS’. He begins what is undoubtedly one of many such letters he had to write: ‘Dear Mr De Winton / The Vagrant Criminal and Inebriate Classes a seething mass of our fellow men look to us as the hand of the Church held out to give them a last chance.’ While many could ‘get a fresh start in life after 2 or 3 months staying in one of our Labour Homes the lack of funds compels us day by day to refuse numbers of genuine helpable persons’. He stresses that the homes ‘are not Shelters and are limited to 25 Inmates men women and youths all received irrespective of creed’. He states that 51 1/2 per cent of those who passed through the institutions in the year 1895 ‘obtained a fresh start’ and that the organisation requires ‘£100000 annually’. ‘The financial burdens come heavily on us who nearly all work without any pay.’ He asks if De Winton can help them ‘regain by labour & religion many rapidly sinking into the vortex of crime and misery.’ 5 May 1896; on leterhead of 130 Edgeware Road, London W. unknown

The lower label stamped "For Official Use Only." No. 1387 stamped in gilt on the upper leather corner of the front cover. Rubbing wear to the leather slight evidence of powder residue red rot from the some parts of the leather and two of the spine labels show slight peeling from the spine. The cloth has some insect damage along the top edge of the rear cover and the fore-edges. The interior has foxing on the endpapers affecting the bookplate on the front endpaper and on several adjacent pages.
