Good. - The autograph of Thomas Myddelton Biddulph penned on a 7/8 inch high by 2-7/8 inch wide slip of paper clipped from a larger sheet. Signed "Sir Thomas Biddulph". A line of text below the signature has been clipped away. The slip of paper is mounted with glue from the verso onto slightly larger card stock. Good. <p>The British army officer and courtier Thomas Myddelton Biddulph 1809-1878 purchased commissions in various regiments of the army. Appointed Master of the Household to Queen Victoria in 1851 he was made an Extra Equerry to the Queen in 1854. Made a Knight Commander of the Civil Division of the Order of the Bath Biddulph was knighted in 1863. He was appointed to various positions including Keeper of the Privy Purse Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall Private Secretary to the Sovereign among others. unknown

Washington DC: April 9 1925. 1925. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling all 4 sides of a sheet of letterhead folded once to form 4 black-bordered sides each 6-3/4 inches high by 5-1/8 inches wide. The address where Hoskins is staying is printed at the top. Signed "Reginald Hoskins". There is a light paper-clip mark to the top edge of each side & the recipient's "date answered" stamp is is on the first side at top right. Folded once for mailing. Together with a sample brochure promoting a previous Hoskins lecture tour. Also with a carbon copy of the recipient's reply. Near fine. <p>Hoskins writes to J.B. Pond of the Pond Lecture Bureau following up on their discussion of a possible American lecture tour. He is about to leave for London and wonders if the financial arrangements will make it feasible for him to return for an extended tour. "I know that it is not easy to foresee with any certainty what sort of a success financially can be made and you quite understood my disinclination to return on an off chance."<p>Major-General Sir Arthur Reginald Hoskins 1871-1942 was a senior British Army officer during the First World War. Hoskins served in the army from 1891 to 1923. Prior to World War I he saw active service In in the Dongola Expedition the Mahdist War the Second Boer War and the Somaliland Campaign. In September 1914 he was recalled from East Africa where he was acting as Inspector of the Kings Africa Rifles and joined the 8th Division then engaged on the Western Front. He was given command of the 8th Brigade in 1915 and in early 1916 was transferred to the East African Campaign. He became Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in East Africa in 1917 later serving as commander of the 3rd Lahore Division in Mesopotamia and Palestine for the remainder of the war. Circa 1840. 1840. Good. - Hume's signature "Joseph Hume" is penned in black ink on a slip of cream-colored paper 3/4 of an inch high by 2-5/8 inches wide. The paper is mounted on a somewhat larger piece of card. The slip of paper is lightly foxed around the edges. Good. <p>Joseph Hume 1777-1855 was a Scottish doctor and a Radical Member of Parliament born in Montrose Angus. He moved to India in 1797 and was commissioned as a surgeon to an army regiment. He was able to take up work as an interpreter and commissary-general owing to his knowledge of the Indian language. After resigning and returning home in 1808 he traveled around England and Europe before entering politics as MP for Weymouth Dorset. He became acquainted with John Mill and the philosophical reformers of the school of Jeremy Bentham. Thereafter he devoted himself to political activism embracing such causes as improving the life of the working classes and trade union reform. He was especially known for holding the feet of Chancellors of the Exchequer to the fire challenging every item of public expenditure exercising a check on extravagance and causing the word "retrenchment" to be added to the Radical program of "peace and reform". circa 1856- 57. 1856- 57. Very good. - Signature on a piece of vellum approximately 1-3/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide clipped from the close of a document. Signed "George Anson" beside his printed title "General / Commander-in-Chief / East Indies". Together with an engraved portrait of Anson 3-3/4 inches high by 2-1/4 inches wide. There is a tiny area of soiling to the portrait's bottom edge. Very good. <p>British army officer George Anson 1797-1857 was promoted to the rank of C in 1853. The following year he was appointed to the command of the Madras Army and in early 1856 became Commander-in-Chief in India. He caused resentment by his bias against the Indian Army and its sepoys. He was quoted as saying that he could never see a sepoy sentry "without turning away in disgust at his unsoldierlike appearance". Anson's appointment coincided with the tensions leading up to the Indian Mutiny of 1857. In May 1857 he sent troops to secure the arsenals in the Punjab. He intended to join the Meerut Brigade and to press on to retake Delhi but four days into the march he died of cholera at the age of 59. circa [1856- 57]. hardcover

A 2-1/2 PAGE AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED by Lieutenant-General Sir HERBERT TAYLOR formerly Aide de camp to the Duke of York with personal content regarding his brother's accident.
February 6 1829. 1829. Very good. - Quarto 9-1/8 inches high by 7-1/4 inches wide. Two-and-a-half pages. Over 180 words penned on 3 sides of a folded sheet. Herbert Taylor thanks the recipient who is caring for his brother for his letter regarding his concerns. "I cannot sufficiently thank you for your friendly & considered attention in writing to me on the 30th Jany upon the subject of the accident which unfortunately happened to my dear Brother on the 27th.". He goes on to state "I thank God that he has escaped more serious injury. It is most satisfying to know that he is in such good hands and that he has with him so kind and attentive a friend as yourself." Signed "H. Tayor". Folded for mailing the letter is mounted to stiff paper stock with glue along the edge of the blank verso of the last leaf. Very good. <p>The British Army officer Lieutenant-General Sir Herbert Taylor 1775-1839 rose through the ranks after jointing the 2nd Dragoon Guards. He served as Aide de camp to the Duke of York then commander-in-chief of the British Army and as Aide de Camp Military Secretary and Private Secretary to the Marquess Cornwallis. In 1805 he became Private Secretary to the Sovereign in service to King George III. He was the first person to fill this post. From 1811 he served as private secretary to Queen Charlotte. Returning to the field to command a brigade at Antwerp in 1813-14 he then served as Member of Parliament for Windsor from 1820-23 and Ambassador to Berlin from 1820 to 1827. He was first and principal Aide de Camp to King George IV and deputy Secretary at War. Adjutant-General to the Forces from 1828-30 he became private secretary to the new king William IV and served as first and principal Aide de Camp to Queen Victoria from 1837-39. He was Master of St. Katherine's Hospital and appointed Master Surveyor and Surveyor-General of the Ordnance in 1828.<p>From the autograph collection of Mrs. Mary Ford widow of Richard Ford who wrote the popular "Handbook for Travellers in Spain". circa 1860. 1860. Good. - sc A 3-1/2 inch high by 2-1/4 inch wide sienna-toned carte-de-visite portrait of the French Army General Pierre Bosquet after an 1857 painting by Horace Vernet. Mounted on 3-3/4 inch high by 2-1/2 inch wide card stock the image shows Marshal Bosquet standing in full regalia with his elbow leaning against a cannon. The edges of the mount are slightly rubbed and the corners very lightly creased though not affecting the image. Good. <p>Pierre Francois Joseph Bosquet 1810-1861 entered the artillery in 1833. As a captain he distinguished himself at Sidi-Lakhdar and Oued-Melah in 1839 and was given command of native tiraileurs. Making his way up the ranks he was one of the earliest to serve in the Crimean War and led the attack at the Battle of Alma and later at the storming of the Mamelon. Returning to France he became a senator and a Marshall of France. He was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath the Grand Cross of the Legion d'Honneur and the Order of the Medjidie 1st Class. circa [1860]. unknown
