With 17pp publisher's catalogue on pink stock bound in at front and rear.The compilation of the Manual of Military Law was initiated by Secretary of State for War Stanley in 1879. In order to produce a single comprehensive manual the Rules of Procedure required considerable legal amendment including the repeal and replacement of the Army Discipline and Regulation Act 1879 by the Army Act 1881. The first edition was approved by both Childers and Hartington and published in 1884. The present edition contains an entirely new chapter on the laws and usages of war revisions resulting from the Army Reforms of 1908 and notably the inclusion for the first time of the Official Secrets Act. It is arguably the most significant single issue containing as it does the broadest set of amendments stemming from sea changes in service structure and practice. ‎N.p. n.d. 1943. Sm. 4to. Sole Edition 4pp leaflet folded once printed in black; some very faint age-staining else a near fine copy. The rarest of all the major Services of Thanksgiving throughout the British Army in WWII this humble document is considerably harder to find than its Second or Eighth Army counterparts. Anderson's First Army was formed in November 1942 as the spearhead of the land forces of TORCH the Allied landings is Algeria and Morocco. Taking its final shape as Eastern Task Force in January 1943 it eventually comprised American II Corps British V and IX Corps and French XIX Corps. Following the landings First Army attempted to secure the Tunisian shoreline but time was against it and the campaign became principally one of long-distance logistics. After the success of Eighth Army at Alamein First Army carried eastwards the main thrust of 18 Army Group's offensive that resulted in the final defeat of the Axis in North Africa in mid-1943 a victory often compared strategically with Stalingrad. Holt/28.0.59/Hastings" A fascinating handbook on the tribal peoples of Syria with a remarkable folding map of 'The Arab Tribes in Syria' a French map overprinted with the tribes' names and their Summer and Winter locations. The handbook was compiled by the British 'Ninth Army' which occupied Syria and Lebanon after the allied defeat of Vichy France in 1941. An official publication it was issued for a limited readership: "This document is the property of H.B.M. Government and is issued for the information of officers and responsible officials." Most surviving copies show signs of official ownership and this is no different with sporadic manuscript annotations updating the intelligence. Uncommon. LibraryHub lists three holdings in the UK at SOAS the British Museum and Oxford. The operations followed unrest that arose in the aftermath of the Third Anglo-Afghan War; they were conducted in the mountainous region of Waziristan now in Pakistan by British and Indian forces against the fiercely independent Waziri and Mahsud tribesmen that inhabited it. Since the 1870s the British government agencies were assiduous in compiling internally published histories of their military frontier operations with the intention of providing a "valuable guide" to such British commanders and policymakers as "might have future dealings with these turbulent neighbours" as the Punjab Government phrased it in 1866.The title-page reports the catalogue number and location of what may be the original report: “Catalogue no. Colour-lithographed map of Iraq Kuwait and southwestern Iran 65.5 x 66 cm in black brown blue and green at a scale of 1:1000000 dissected into 12 sections and mounted on contemporary cloth. First edition of the first accurate Ottoman general map of Central and Southern Iraq Kuwait and Khuzestan southwestern Iran; the authoritative map used by the Ottoman army for strategic planning during the "Mesopotamia Campaign" where Ottoman-German forces mounted a unexpectedly strong resistance to Britain's invasion of Iraq in World War I. Examples of the present map were used by Ottoman commanders who oversaw the successful Ottoman-German defence of Baghdad at the Battle of Ctesiphon 22-25 Nov. 1915 as well as the capture of the main British army at the Siege of Kut-al-Amara 7 Dec. 1915-29 April 1916. It shows the tip of the Gulf and the Tigris and Euphrates vallies including Kuwait most of Iraq and Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran. Mountain ridges are rendered in brown with rivers and marshes in blue permanent bodies of water in green and parallels and meridians at every degree ranging from about 43.5 to 49.5°E longitude and 29 to 34°N latitude. With the text entirely in Ottoman Turkish the map is based on the British War Office's "Lower Mesopotamia between Baghdad and the Persian Gulf" 1911 which was itself in part based on Ottoman sources. Both maps were dramatically superior in all respects to previous efforts forming the culmination of over three generations of reconnaissance capped by critical late-breaking discoveries.Some light stains in the margins and the lower-right quadrant but generally in good condition. Second edition considerably expanded of a field guide to Mesopotamia Iraq published on behalf of the General Staff in India for the use of officers serving in the Mesopotamian campaign during the First World War stating on the binding and title-page "for official use only". The guide is divided into eight chapters dealing with Iraq's history geography population resources military strength maritime power administration and communication respectively. The fifth and sixth chapter also contain valuable information on the Turkish military and maritime strength. The present edition adds much new information that was not included in the 1915 edition. For example the "list of routes" in the present guide contains 36 routes between compared to 14 routes in the 1915 guide. The routes are shown on the folding map.With the owner's inscription of H.W. This is a privately-issued commemorative yearbook-type photo album shashin-cho published on behalf of the Imperial Japanese Army medical forces during the Second Sino-Japanese War 1937-1945. Specifically it was produced for those who served under military physician captains/commanding officers Nobuo Isa and Tetsuo Fukaya who were stationed in or near Shanghai at the time.<br /> <br /> By July 1939 the Imperial Japanese Army was beginning to feel the impact of its own mounting casualties and costs; the Chinese Red Army would launch a major offensive later that November. While the Japanese occupation of Shanghai was notably brutal there is little evidence of violence in this album. However some photographs do depict the aftermath of battle with ruined buildings and soldiers being treated for injuries. Other subjects are mundane in nature: Staff and group portraits hospitals and other facilities physicians at work company events and ceremonies. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink & filling almost 3 sides of a sheet of light gray paper folded once to form 4 sides approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 4-5/8 inches wide. The letter has been mounted on a lightly larger sheet of cream-colored stiff paper. Signed "Anglesey" There are a few small ink smudges to the 2nd & 3rd sides. Very good. <p>The letter is addressed to Scottish geologist Sir Roderick Murchison and concerns a publication which Murchison is proposing and how it would be funded. "Some Estimate of the probable cost of money and of time is called for from General Colby and when it is received you shall again hear from me." The reference is probably to General Thomas Frederic Colby a leading geographer who had been director of the Ordnance Survey.<p>Henry Paget 1st Marquess of Anglesey 1768-1854 was a British army officer and politician. After serving as Member of Parliament for Carnarvon and then for Milborne Port he took part in the Flanders Campaign. During the Peninsula War he commanded the cavalry for Sir John Moore's army in Spain and at the Battle of Sahagun virtually destroyed a regiment of French cavalry. He led the charge of the heavy cavalry against Comte d'Erlon's column at the Battle of Waterloo losing part of one of his legs to a cannonball at the end of the battle. In later life he served as Master-General of Ordnance from 1846 to 1852.<p>The Scottish geologist Sir Roderick sometimes as here spelled "Rhoderick" Impey Murchison 1st Baronet 1792-1871 was the first to describe and investigate the Silurian system. During the last decade of his life he chiefly investigated the Highlands of Scotland. Murchison was one of the founders and a president of the Royal Geographical Society and served on the Royal Commission on the British Museum. In 1855 he was appointed director-general of the British Geological Survey and director of the Royal School of Mines and the Museum of Practical Geology in Jermyn Street London.
