Pair of Annotated Vernacular Photograph Albums and Scrapbooks Documenting the World War II Homefront Service of Lt. Erma Jean Frazier in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps
Various locations mainly Texas Oklahoma and Arkansas 1945. Two albums. Album I: 24 leaves illustrated with twenty-four original photographs over two dozen postcards mostly photographic original letters and military documents and a large quantity of ephemeral items. Folio. Contemporary cream cloth decoratively stamped on front board in gilt and silver string tied. Album II: 11 leaves illustrated with ninety-eight photographs in mounting corners six loose photos and a couple of ephemeral items. Oblong folio. Contemporary brown cloth decoratively stamped on front board in gilt yellow and red string tied. Overall minor wear. Very good condition. A pair of annotated vernacular photograph album / scrapbooks compiled by Lt. Erma J. Frazier and her mother during her wartime service in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps. Frazier served in the Nurse Corps at various hospitals in the Trans-Mississippi West at Camp Swift in Bastrop Texas; Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio Texas; Okmulgee Oklahoma; and Camp Robinson Arkansas. Frazier hailed from East Brady Pennsylvania and worked as a Registered Nurse at the nearby Kittanning Hospital before she entered military service. She enlisted in early 1945 and served throughout the conclusion of the Second World War. The present albums record her service time in unusual detail with a mixture of original photographs picture postcards original military documents a few manuscript letters and various ephemeral items.<br /> <br /> The first album was compiled by Frazier's mother who inscribes the first page: "I dedicate this book to my daughter Erma Jean Eberhart Frazier who entered the Armed Services on March 17 1945 as a 2nd Lt. in the Nurse Army Corps a Camp Swift Texas." This album focuses mainly on Frazier's time at Camp Swift and Okmulgee Oklahoma. This album contains the lion's share of the ephemera including a patch the floral corsage she wore on the day she left for service military paperwork and forms and various newspaper clippings. The military paperwork includes enlistment documents including her "Application for Appointment" a manuscript postcard from the director of the Red Cross describing Frazier as a "professional qualified for military service" Army documents on qualifications for nurses and more. Other ephemera includes letters and cards received by her at Camp Swift a page of five pressed "Flowers from Texas" each preserved in a small plastic bag shipping tags from packages of clothing sent home by Frazier a couple of church programs a page of ten small postcards from her visit to Austin a menu from Brooke General & Convalescent Hospital at Fort Sam Houston some greeting cards and so forth. The photographs include portraits of Frazier from 1943 and 1944 while a nursing student; eight pictures of Frazier and other soldiers at Camp Swift; and eight shots of Frazier fellow soldiers and their barracks and administration buildings at Okmulgee Oklahoma.<br /> <br /> The second album was compiled by Frazier herself who provides a manuscript title on the inside front cover: "Memories of the Army Nurse Corps." There are also two photographs inscribed in the first person "Me on arrival at G.G.H." and "side entrance to my barracks G.G.H.". This album is almost entirely comprised of captioned photographs particularly valuable for identifying numerous fellow soldiers serving with Frazier. The images emanate from the last three locations at which Frazier served which she lists on the inside front cover: Brooke General Hospital at Fort Sam Houston Glennon General Hospital in Okmulgee and Regional Hospital at Camp Robinson Arkansas. Perhaps Frazier felt her mother's album largely focused on Camp Swift sufficiently memorialized here time there. The photographs are presented in chronological order and include portraits of dozens of men and women with whom Frazier served or patients served by Frazier often accompanied by informative and sometimes humorous manuscript captions on the album leaves or directly on the images. The photos also picture the hospitals themselves and include a handful of images taken during leisure time on base.<br /> <br /> A unusually informative pair of World War II-era albums and scrapbooks preserving the service of a highly-qualified Army nurse from Pennsylvania serving in the American West during the last year of the war. unknown

Howes This official pamphlet details the failed Mexican expedition into the Republic of Texas over the period of October 21 1836 to March 14 1837. Barreiro an army commissioner in charge of the operation concludes that the "ridiculo" Texan rebels were far less dangerous than the hostile desert terrain. Bien despreciable y ridiculo es ese peloton de aventureros que piensan que es como andar en cacerias de fieras haberselas con veteranos valientes y aguerridos: es el clima son los desiertos horrorosos son los rios invadeables son los pantanos." It is not the number of the Texas army that is fearsome. Very despicable and ridiculous is that platoon of adventurers who think that it is like going on wild beast hunts dealing with brave and seasoned veterans: it is the climate it is the horrible deserts it is the uncrossable rivers the swamps. Texas had declared its independence on March 2 1836 a culmination of the Texan Revolution which had begun on October 2 1835. The United States did not diplomatically recognize the Republic of Texas until March of 1837 near the publication date of this pamphlet. Kamnik district Slovenia: Tehnika RK VI 1943. 30pp. 8vo mimeographed text with images original tan wrappers with mimeographed cover.<br/> <br/> This rare surviving pamphlet from World War II was produced by the Yugoslav Partisans the most accomplished armed resistance movement against the Axis occupation of Europe. Starting out as a guerilla group the Partisans soon created a complete underground society based on Communist principles including schools government and medical institutions financial systems and publishing presses. This pamphlet produced by one such press likely hidden in the mountains or forests of Slovenia addresses an emergent need in such a new clandestine society: that for maps. It proceeds in logical order: geographical vocabulary instructions for making field maps and later more sophisticated and symbolic drafting techniques. Within this technical know-how it also communicates tactical military advice that the Partisan guerillas employed in their battles with Axis armies. This tactical quality of the publication is most in evidence in the pamphlets many striking diagrams which demonstrate the importance of visual knowledge in situations of survival.<BR> <BR> This pamphlet was one of many Partisan publications designed to educate protect and encourage members of the movement. It is particularly fascinating for its simple means of production since the secrecy of Partisan operations limited them to mechanical methods such as mimeographs--in witness here--as well as heliotypes linocuts and typewriting. Given its fragility the pamphlet is in excellent condition with clean text. Slight stains and some very small tears in margins. As one of the few Partisan publications on cartography this pamphlet is a rare and fascinating record of the World War II resistance.<br/> <br/> Tehnika RK VI unknown

Stamped Red Brick Fragment
Carnuntum c62AD-200AD. Fragment of a reddish clay brick with the stamp of Legio X Gemina Pia Fidelis “"LEG X C PF" the 10th Roman legion of 5280 men split into 10 cohorts. Mortar layer on the back otherwise a very good and well preserved stamp. Ex collection Piscator 1959. Cf. on this piece Brandl op. cit. no. 187-190. 6 1/2" x 4" x 1 1/4" Legio X Gemina was formed from the disbanded Legio X the first Roman legion levied personally by Julius Caesar in 58 BCE. It distinguished itself as one of the four legions used by Caesar in his invasion of Gaul fought for Octavian and Antony against Brutus and Cassius in the Battle of Philippi in 42 BCE and followed Antony in his campaigns against Parthia and Armenia 36-34 BCE. The legion surrendered to Octavian after the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE losing its prestigious name Equestris as punishment and receiving veterans from other legions which earned it the cognomen "Gemina" twin. After service in the Cantabrian Wars and brief deployments to various frontier posts the legion was sent to Carnuntum a fortress on the Danube between current day Vienna and Bratislava in about 61 CE where it remained vigilant against Germanic threats. Following participation in Trajan's Second Dacian War the legion moved twice more first to Aquincum Budapest in 103 CE then finally to Vindobona Vienna in 114 CE where they remained stationed defending the Danube frontier until the 5th century though vexillationes were periodically sent for campaigns in Judaea Mauritania and Parthia.<br /> <br /> Red clay bricks like these were a common building material in Roman architecture from about the time of Augustus and making bricks was among the chores for Roman soldiers during their down time. unknown
