This official souvenir book of the 31st reunion lists the officers of the G.A.R. with their photographs describes various auxiliary units Women’s Relief Corps Daughters of Veterans etc. chronicles the contributions of the state of New York Buffalo and Erie Counties in the war as well as an enumeration of companies by unit type. However about 75% of the booklet is devoted to a description of Buffalo and its attractions with photographs of various buildings businesses street scenes residents parks etc. The encampments began in 1866 one year after the close of the Civil War and this is the 31st consecutive year that it had been held. A wonderfully visual piece. Small gift inscription on rear inside cover a tiny old water stain to bottom edge of some rear pages but not affecting the text or pictures a small crease to bottom edge of front cover else a very good internally clean copy. Fischer written on the right front flyleaf. <br /> <br /> Laid inside the rear cover is an illustration titled "Outpost Position" split cleanly and evenly in half. On the blank rear end paper are two inscriptions. The first in pencil states "Last book I bound." The second inscription located in back is lengthy and interesting - "March 23 1918 Bound this book this a.m. 1421 Walmit. Weather fine. Germans began their much advertised offensive yesterday and still at it today. Have every confidence that the line will hold. Losses in material & territory are to be expected. If the line can be held till Spring '19 the Germans will be whipped. Gen Del sp. Windoms sp. R. Z 830 P.M." Written below the inscription appears to be some sort of code No information found searching the internet on variations of the name inscribed or that of Edw. W. Fischer the name found on the front paste down. She is glad Henry's health is fine and hopes the letters written to him by a family friend and the "girls" reaches him. She also asks Henry if he needs more shirts and stockings. Mother states "I wish I could send you a drink of cold water I think it must be hard indeed to have such poor water. I hope this dreadful war will close soon but do not see any prospect of it." <br /> <br /> The second letter 4 pages long is dated March 9th 1863 is written on a sheet of 15" x 10" folded paper. The letter is addressed "Friend Henry" and was written from Columbian College Hospital Washington D.C. and signed at the end by Chas. Wilbur. The contents discuss rumors of the 9th Corps headed to the old Carolina State "but I do not take much stock in it". Wilbur remarks "I am feeling gay as a lark and there is but one thing that troubles me nights that is the fear of going to the Convalescent Camp." Most of the letter describes the day to day activities of Chas. Wilbur and hearing or not heraing from other acquaintance's. unknown
