Washington DC: U.S. Army Air Forces 1947. 17 3/8 x 17 3/8 inches. Very good condition. This is a very nice chloropeth map showing vegetation zones as determined by resources of Goode Schlepper Schreves Rand McNally Taylor and others. The single hemisphere plays out well to northern South America. In context of the post WWII environment there is very little at play. As would not be expected the terms of glovbal warming could be benchmarked with a vegetation map from pre-United Nations sources. U.S. Army Air Forces unknown

Typed copy of a letter purportedly by an Irishwoman addressed to a lady resident in England Nannie Dryhurst or her daughter Sylvia Lynd describing the 'butchery' inflicted on her son killed by the British during or after the Clonmult Ambush.
3 March 1921. 2pp. 4to. In good condition on lightly-aged paper. One minor manuscript emendation see below. Dated at the head 'March 3rd. 1921' and addressed to 'Madam'. Part of the letter was published - lacking the first sentence and all of the second page and with the name 'Clonmult' omitted - in the second volume of the 'News Letter of the Friends of Irish Freedom National Bureau of Information Washington' where it was preceded by: 'The following is the story of an Irish mother who relates in a letter received by a lady resident in England how she was called to a military barracks in Ireland to identify her dead son:' The letter begins: 'Madam I beg to acknowledge with grateful thanks the sum of £1. I am one of the mothers of the boys who was killed at Clonmult on February 20th. sic He amended in manuscript from 'he' was only 19 years old and as fine a young man as you would wish to see and I his mother that saw him only three weeks previous to his death when I went up to Cork barracks to identify him I really at first could only recognise his hair - Oh! my goodness what a butchery they gave those 12 young men. To my dying day I wont sic forget the sight that met my eyes when that dead house door was opened to see all those fine young men thrown like dogs on the floor labeled "on H.M.S." and each one having a number and their poor feet tied with ropes. My poor boy was just inside the door his poor face all broke up his eyes were broke in his head his mouth broke and twisted and all his teeth in his mouth one arm completely cut off and not one inch of his poor body but bayonet wounds you could easily see they were bayonet wounds as ll his coat and pants were cut through and one great big hole just up at his neck like as if they drove the bayonet to the butt and turned it round'. Here the published extract ends but the author goes on to describe how her husband has been '12 months idle the end of this month he is gone to work yesterday thank God' and that her '4 little children' have been 'often hungry and would be worse only I went out working myself to try and keep the home over us and anywhere that poor boy tried to get employment the police prevented him also his father so thank God he is at rest'. She asserts that she 'could write a book on the way I and my family are persecuted by police and military during the past 18 months torn out of bed at all hours of the night my house and place all upset.' 'The Solomons' and 'The U-Boats' together with two photographs and an advertisement 'Britain Calls Her Armies' for 'Army Week' on the B.B.C. 28 February to 6 March 1943. Dale Mabry Field wos named in honor and memory of the late Captain Dale Mabry; a native of Tallahassee. Captain Mabry saw service abroad during the first World War from January 1918 to July 1919. His brilliant career was abruptly terminated when he was killed in the Airship 'Roma' disaster at Norfolk Virginia on February 21 1922. It is to him and men like him that this field is dedicated. The field is located some three miles from the City of Tallahassee Capital of the State of Florida. Dale Mabry Field has mushroomed from what was once a small municipal airport to one of the truly large Army Air Force fields in the Southeast. from a small group of officers and enlisted men who first arrived here in February 1941 to the thousands that are now stationed here and the thousands yet to come. pilots ground crews service crews those that fly them and those that 'keep 'em flying.' 24 May 1853; Newport Isle of Wight. Folio 1 p. Twenty-three lines. Text clear and complete. Good on lightly-aged paper. His mother Lady Napier who went to town the previous day has 'taken charge of the 2 Vols of the Athenaeum' his correspondent sent him. 'Lady Napier has promised to call herself at Leicester Square & deliver the books to you'. If he should be in when she calls Napier asks him to 'explain to her my theory as to the "Sources of the Nile" briefly embodied in the accompanying paper'. He asks him to either return the paper 'with your marks' or if he thinks 'it will bear the test of publicity could you manage to get it inserted for me in the "Times"' In a postscript initialled 'E. N.' he states that the Athenaeum volumes are the only ones he has received '& I have not heard of any others having been sent to Sir Charles Napier in Albemarle Street after I left London'. A long letter by 'E. ELERS NAPIER Lieutenant-Colonel. Braiswick-lodge Colchester June 28.' headed 'THE SOURCES OF THE NILE' was published by The Times on 30 June 1853. 31 July 1863. 'No. 13. Abstract B.'. Folio 3 pp. A printed form on three leaves held together by the original pink ribbon. Docketed on the reverse of two of the leaves with the army said to be 'At M<> Field'. In five columns: 'Date of Payment' 'Number of Voucher' 'To whom paid' 'On what account' and 'Amount' in 'Dollars' and 'Cts'. The first two columns left blank and the last three completed in manuscript comprising a numbered list of the names of sixty-five payees reasons for payment and sums paid. The text is clear and complete but the document is in fragile condition on aged and chipped paper. 'Capt Charles M Walker' receives $7.50 for a 'Court Martial' 'Thos Calvin' receives $120 for being a 'Forage Master' 'LC Thos Kendall' receives $72.96 for 'Mileage' and 'James Anderson' receives '$17.14 for "Extra Duty'. The Colonel Andrew J. MacKay Letters and Papers 1863-1865 are in the University of Tennessee Special Collections Library Knoxville. According to the Library's catalogue entry Mackay's 'primary duty was to provide supplies to the cavalry soldiers in the region'. Supporting the application of 'Surgeon Charles Lowdell Officiating Agency Surgeon Baghelkhund sic applying for the Acting Appointment of Medical Officer in Charge Bhopal Battalion in the event of a vacancy occurring in October next'. Lowdell is holding his current post while Surgeon Goldsmith is on furlough and on his return will be without an appointment. 'His duties in connection with the special charge of the young Maharaja have been difficult and have required the exercise of tact and patience. Doctor Lowdell has been most successful and has gained the confidence of those who are most jealous of the supervision of the Maharajas health. . the Dispensaries in the Rewah State as well as other Dispensaries of the Agency have been well supervised by him and the vaccination returns for the year which gives the large number of 52000 children operated on testifies to Dr. Lowdell's care and attention int his important matter.' Autograph Letter Signed from Sir Gilbert Mackereth 'Gilbert Mackereth' British Consul at Damascus to Ernest Gye of the Foreign Office on his posting to Tangier and including a discussion of British artists there.
On letterheads of the British Consulate Damascus; 21 January 1933. 8 pp 12mo. In very good condition on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'Dear Ernest'. He begins by congratulating Gye on his promotion and 'on going to Tangier - a delightful spot'. It is however 'very sad' that Gye's 'guiding hand over our destinies will no longer be there in the Office'. He thanks Gye for his 'kindness' and 'sympathy': 'My path has lain along uneventful ways and it has been an untold solace to feel you did not despise those who had mearly sic to 'stand & wait''. Gye will find Tangier 'the gateway to Morocco' a 'joy' and 'the light there & in the rest of Morocco - it varies a lot will give your brush new elements with which to deal. It was interesting to watch its influence on the paintings of Bishop Henry A.R.A.' Gye will 'no doubt meet the weird but not untalented "Teddy Wolf" who seems to be less eccentric as an artist now than when first he came to Fez in 1928.' He finds Damascus 'curiously reminiscent of its offspring - Fez' and he finds it 'so little changed in ten years apart from the devastations of the Forces bombardment in 1925'. Ends by discussing accommodation. He 'can't bear Mrs. Hole's choice of a house' but hopes to change address. 'I feel strongly at the moment that H.M.G. ought to own all official houses'. Autograph Letter Signed 'Charles A. Elton' from Sir Charles Abraham Elton to John Taylor editor of the 'London Magazine' submitting a contribution on 'Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' and discussing his own and other contributions.
'Clifton Bristol. August 16th.' 1821. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed by Elton on reverse of second leaf to 'John Taylor Esq.' Taylor had assumed the editorship of the London Magazine on the death by duel of John Scott in February 1821. Elton begins by informing Taylor that he has 'not been able yet to manage the Batrachomyomachia to my mind'. Elton's translation of 'The Battle of the Frogs and Mice' would appear anonymously in the issue of October 1821 as the second of a series named 'Leisure Hours'. He has instead 'sent some chit-chat to serve as an introduction'. 'On Homer's Battle of the Frogs and Mice' appeared in September 1821 as the first of the series. He intends this as 'the first of occasional desultory papers of criticism poetry or the like: a specimen or two of the Battle of Frogs may form the second of the series'. Changing the subject he now declines two books Taylor has sent him to review: he feels that too much has already been said about Madame de Stael and he has 'already administered the ferula to her somewhat roughly'. He is 'equally diffident about Bonaparte's literary character' and asks whether 'Mr Hazlitt or Leigh Hunt' are not 'the fittest men to undertake it'. He feels that to 'enter fully' into Taylor's 'plan relative to the Monthly Literature seems to require the interchange of sentiments in conversation' and that this is 'one of the disadvantages of a periodical contributor residing in the country'. He suspects that 'a London domicile' is 'necessary for the convenient and ready arrangement and execution of this sort of monthly summary'. He has been 'thinking of some regular supply of poetry translated or original independent of the incidental passages in the Leisure Hours' but has not yet 'ascertained either my plan or my powers'. In the first part of a postscript he asks 'What is Knickerbocker Washington Irving & is he worth reviewing' This appears to be a reference to a footnote to the 'Epistle to Elia' by 'OLEN' published in the August 1821 issue of the London Magazine; the footnote also discusses two readings of that poem thanks Taylor 'for the Magazine' and ends 'It is a pity the writer who so ably reviewed Crabbe does not continue his "Series of Living Poets." The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers develops- river projects across the country that have potential impacts on the vegetation in areas adjacent to the river called riparian corridors. As part of the project review process the impact of the proposed project on the environment must be evaluated. Information about the environmental value of riparian vegetation is difficult to access because it is diffuse in the literature. RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research is to review the literature for information pertinent to assessing the environmental value of riparian vegetation. SUMMARY: Vegetation contributes greatly to the hydraulic hydrologic water quality and life support functions commonly performed in riparian corridors. The resistance to flow by vegetation reduces flow velocity and the energy of flowing water that erodes shorelines and carries suspended sediments. Bank materials are bound and supported by roots. Vegetated watersheds help to stabilize baseflow rates by increasing infiltration and permeability of soils. The result is that vegetation helps to stabilize stream morphology and hydrology and attenuate floods. In addition suspended solids and dissolved chemicals and nutrients in river water are reduced proportionately with residence time in vegetated floodplain. Riparian vegetation provides food refuge and nesting areas for a diverse array of terrestrial and aquatic fauna. Losses of riparian vegetation can lead therefore to a destabilization of stream morphology alteration of hydrology degraded water quality and reductions in many types of fish and wildlife. The study also tested the draft survey instrument against results obtained in four focus group interviews which were conducted in 1998 at the same CE lakes. The 1999 survey population included African Americans at Woodruff Lake AL and Carlyle Lake IL; Hispanic Americans at Canyon Lake TX and Pine Flat Lake CA; and Asian Americans at Hensley Lake CA and Pine Flat Lake CA. The survey was conducted from May 15 to July 30 1999. While Native Americans were not included in this survey the report contains a discussion of six focus groups which were conducted during the summer of 1997 with fifteen Native American tribes located in the CE's Tulsa and Omaha Districts.
