‎British Army in India a supplies scandal Eight highly-finished capable caricatures by 'C' involving a Raj army supplies scandal 'Bilk' 'Jemadar Amwalla and the Old Atasi Troupe' 'Mahomed Arif & Co' 'the G. C. M.' and the Madras Times.‎

‎Two dated from Cannanore Kannur Kerala India one to December 1913 and the other simply to 1913. Eight witty and attractive caricatures in a sub-Punch style. All eight in good condition on lightly-aged paper. Each in black ink on a separate piece of paper five of them 33.5 x 21.5 cm and three of them 21 x 17 cm. The context of the caricatures is at present obscure but would undoubtedly make itself clear with specialist research. The five largest illustrations are: ONE: Caption: 'Please to remember The twenty-seventh of November The "Bilk-Powder" treason and plot'. Balding European in dress uniform sitting on a powder barrel on which is written: 'Finest high explosives Bilk Powder Mahomed Arif & Co Sole Manufacturers Guaranteed to retain its power even after four years.' Barrel behind with 'ACRE JCS' on it. TWO: Dated in bottom right-hand corner: 'after Marcus Stone II Cannanore Dec 1913'. Same balding individual portrayed as a Regency duellist waiting pensively with pistol in hand at a stile as dapper figure with monocle and cane approaches. FIVE: Caption: 'Il Trovatore Act 4 Scene 19 Leonora Alias "Alicemary". from without deplores the fate of her lover and is answered from within the prison by Manrico Manrico "Tho' for one year we sever "Thou wilt remember me. "In the "Madras Times" there thou wilt champion me Alicemary mine! we part but not for ever'. The balding figure in a cell in chains with a view of a woman through barred gothic windows behind him. The three smaller illustrations are: SIX: Dated in bottom right-hand corner 'C. Cannanore 1913'. ‎Parliament Street London . 23 August 1770. 1p. 4to. In fair condition aged and worn with fraying to edges and loss at one corner from the opening of the seal. There is a faint pencil note on three lines in another hand at the foot of the letter. The letter reads: 'Having considerd Lt Hawkins situation and the effect the Climate of Jamaica has had upon him – I am of opinion that He is totally unable to join his Regiment and there is great reason to fear his health will never be such as to enable him to do duty with it in that Island John Manners Parliament St. Augst. 23d. 1770'. At the time of writing Manners was a month away from hiis death. He had relinquished the position of Commander in Chief of the Forces in the previous year but still held those of Master-General of the Ordnance and Colonel of the Royal Horse Guards. Dempsey's obituary in The Times explains how 'In April 1945 he was appointed Brigadier I/C Administration East Africa Command' holding the position into the following year and retiring in December 1947 on account of ill health. For a full account of Dempsey's military career see his entry in Catholic Who's Who vol.35 1952. In an eight-line Autograph Note Signed at the end of Anderson's letter Dempsey states that Anderson 'had been my personal & immediate superior as G.O.C. in C. East Africa Command when I was his Brigadier I/C Administration. He became Governor of Gibraltar and has been dead some time now having himself got a coronary thrombosis.' The present item is an Air Mail letter. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium on blue paper. Addressed to 'Brigadier M. C. sic Demspey CBE No 87 General Hospital Nairobi Kenya Colony'. Anderson has confused Dempsey with the more illustrious General Sir Miles Christopher Dempsey 1896-1969.Anderson begins by condoling with Dempsey on 'a return of your thrombosis': 'it is no use going on kicking against the pricks and you must I fear face the need for a quiet life'. He next describes the weather in Scotland 'our 21st day of hard frost & snow'. A report on his wife's trip to the metropolis turns into an attack on the postwar Labour government: 'Kathleen is in London trying to buy clothes by candle & torch light and shivering in her hotel. I fear this country is in for a very severe crisis made worse by the theories & idealisms of the Govt which fiddles while Rome does not burn.' After more domestic news he reports: 'I saw Brown and also Fisher while in London at the end of last month. The War Office continues hopeful about all their grand schemes for Kenya: but it will be a miracle if they get 1/10th of the present estimated cost. And on the same lines I dont see how the country can carry a large Army and 18 months conscription. We are so hard pressed economically that I think it is fanstastic to try & carry such a Burden.' ‎St. Leonard's. 10 June 1818. 1p. 4to. Bifolium. Addressed with postmarks on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Simpson Clothiere St. Martin's Lane London.' In fair condition on aged paper. Docketted with Harcourt's dates. The letter reads: 'Sir Captain Sir Murray Maxwell having signified his intention of offering himself as a Candidate for Westminster at the ensuing Election; I shall be much obliged to you if you will give him Your Vote upon that occasion.' In the 1818 general election Maxwell 1775-1831 was defeated by less than 400 votes losing to Sir Samuel Romilly and Sir Francis Burdett. The campaign ruined him financially and his health was permanently undermined after he was struck in the back in Covent Garden by a paving stone thrown from a mob opposed to his candidacy. ‎'The Kings Mews Tuesday August 13th 1799'. 1p 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition lightly aged and worn. Reads 'Major General Garth presents his Compliments to Mr Ford and informs Him that Their Majesties and Princesses stop to breakfast at Hartford Bridge – and once afterwards for five Minutes at Stoney Cross – The Compton Arms – between Rumsey & Kingwood.' Postscript: 'The Majr Genl: supposes Mr Ford is acquainted that The King leaves Windsor 17th next.' Ford – the son of Queen Charlotte's physician James Ford – was clearly enquiring with regard to the king's itinerary for security purposes. According to his entry in the History of Parliament 'In 1792 he was appointed magistrate of Shadwell police court. He was subsequently employed by the Home Office to collect information on radical agitators and manage French agents. … At the time of his death he was acting magistrate for the Home Office.' See his entry and those of Garth and Princess Sophia in the Oxford DNB. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter 1923-1981 whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' 1969 suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'. ‎Lieutenant-General Sir George Thomas Napier. Autograph Letter Signed 'Geo. Napier' to Daniel Flexney concerning the loss of some bonds written with his left hand following the loss of his right arm during the Peninsular War.‎

‎Upminster Middlesex. 30 July 1818. 1p. 4to. Bifolium. In good condition on aged paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'Mr. Danl. Flexney Westborne Place Bayswater near London' with two postmarks in red ink one round and the other oval the second in two parts both giving year 1818. Docketed and with the following note above the text of the letter: 'From Lieut Col George Napier To Mr. Danl. Flexney written with his left hand after the loss of his right Arm in battle in the Peninsular.' The letter reads: 'Sir I take the liberty of asking you if by chance any box or parcel was left at your house in which papers might be put as I have lost some Bonds or mislaid them. I had them before I left Bays Water but where I put them or what is become of them I am quite ignorant & merely write in case you may recollect my ever having mentioned them to you; I am glad to hear Mrs. Flexney is better & sincerely wishing her a good recovery I remain Sir Your Obedt.
