Its text is a reprint of Joel Brill's German translation of 1785. Very light stain in lower corner minor creases. First edition. Small illustrated broadside with a woodcut of a standing lion printed on blue paper. Approx. 7-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches. "Ambrosius Henkel and his brother Solomon founded the Henkel Press at New Market Virginia in 1806. Henkel was the first to print a German newspaper in Virginia 1808. The Henkels used many home-made woodcuts in theor books and it is possible that Ambrosius or Solomon had some part in their production" Hamilton Early American Book Illustrators and Wood Engravers p. 142.<br /> <br /> The broadside prints a complete alphabet except for "J" in three alternating lines of capital letters first in Fraktur type and then in modern face Roman type followed by a four-line verse in smaller Fraktur type beginning "Lern' den Buchstab' erst recht kennen . ". Pennsylvania State University notes a similar broadside publication with a different illustration which they attribute to Henkel stating: "The broadside contains a complete alphabet of capital letters in Fraktur type and three lower case letters followed by a four line verse beginning "Lern' den Buchstab' erst recht kennen. cf. <p>Stitched sheets. 155 x 100 mm. 6 x 4 inches.  12 pp. in a neat minute hand. Place and date in manuscript at head of the first leaf.</p> <br /> <p>Solomon Reed 1719-1785 graduated from Harvard in 1739. He served as minister of the North Congregational Church of North Middleborough from 1757 until his death.  He was the successor of Rev. Isaac Backus who served the Church from 1748 to 1756.</p> <br /> <p>This sermon offers Reed's views on election and predestination recognizing the influence of the First Great Awakening on the Congregationalist churches of the time. He speaks to the more liberal ideas that man could be eligible for salvation and forgiveness of sins.  See: S. Hopkins Emery's "History of the Church of North Middleborough Massachusetts in Six Discourses" Middleborough: 1876 pp.27-31. The Pilgrim Society in Plymouth has some of Reed's manuscript sermons in their collection along with a journal he kept from October 1743 to January 1745. First edition of this very rare pamphlet on birth control issued by the notorious mail-order erotica publisher Falstaff Press which specialized in republishing many of the Panurge anthropological titles including titles on sexuality sexual disorders birth control eugenics phallic worship scientific sexualia and flagellation. Most of these titles were written by some of the most significant anthropologists and sociologists working in the new and growing field of sexual sciences in the 1930s including Hirschfeld Reclus Niemoeller and Rohleder. Solomon Malkin was a young New York University scholar who had studied under Magnus Hirschfeld at the Institute for Sexual Science in Berlin and oversaw the choosing of illustrations and text for the birth control pamphlets. This work details the very unreliable “Rhythm Method†of contraception depending on the charting of menstrual cycles however notes that this is has only 50% effectiveness and should be combined with artificial birth control methods.
