Signed and inscribed by acclaimed Hebrew poet Hayim Nachman Bialik and his longtime collaborator Yehoshua Hana Ravnitzki to seminal Hebrew writer and philosopher Ahad Ha'am Asher Zvi Hirsch Ginsberg 1856 - 1927 on the half-title. Both Bialik and Ravnitzky served as the editors arrangers and commentators of these volumes. The inscription states "The fruit of our joint labor in joint suffering a gift of love to Ahad Ha'Am" dated March 27th 1924. Each of the title pages contain the ownership inscriptions of Ahad Ha'Am at the top.<br /> <br /> This set collects the entirety of the poetic works of 11th century Spanish-Jewish poet and philosopher Solomon ibn Gabirol. The set is organized into two volumes with the first 1924 containing his "secular poems" and the second 1925 containing his religious poems "sacred poems" including "Keter Malchut" considered his magnum opus. Commentary organization and editing of the works throughout the volumes by Hayim Nachman Bialik and Y.H. Ravnitski. Each volume contains a table of Hebrew abbreviations roshe tevot used. <br /> <br /> Text in Hebrew.<br /> <br /> Bindings with some degree of bowing to the front boards. Light rubbing to extremities with the second volume with light soling the front cover and some rippling and water stains throughout. Spine of vol.2 repaired along the hinge. Vol.1 with some tears chipping and damp stains to the half-title with some addition damp stains along the gutter of the introductory pages. Decorative endpapers of vol.1 reinforced with japan tissue. He had written several books this one included in his life time and published more than 250 articles in the fields of Rabbinics and Theology. Decorative tailpiece. <br /> <br /> First edition of "Yam Shel Shelomo" the Seal of Solomon Luria's major work of Halakha written on sixteen tractates of the Talmud; however it is extant on only seven. <br /> <br /> In it the author analyzes key sugyot passages and decides between various authorities as to the practical halacha. <br /> <br /> Luria famously objected to Isserles's method of presenting halakhic rulings without discussing their derivation. He wrote "Yam Shel Shlomo" to 'probe the depths of the halacha' and to clarify the process by which those halachot are reached. <br /> <br /> Binding partly rubbed along edges. About the author: Solomon ben Jehiel Luria Rashal/Maharshal 1510-1574 was a celebrated Jewish Talmudic commentator who served as rabbi and rosh yeshivah at Ostrog Brisk and Lublin. His halakhic rulings were independent and avoided pilpul and were generally accepted. Only a proportion of his work has been preserved including his "Yam shel Shelomo" The Seal of Solomon and his "Hokhmat Shelomo" The Wisdom of Solomon 1582. Edited by Isaac Abraham Euchel one of leaders of the moderate wing of the Berlin Haskalah. Prefaces by Narbonni and Maimon. Errata pages after the first and third sections. Explanation of philosophical terms. As with Moses Mendelssohn's Biur project this work exemplifies the moderate strain within the late 18th century German Haskalah which attempted to reform traditional Judaism using the medieval Jewish philosophical tradition exemplified by Maimonides. A highly controversial figure both during his lifetime and after his death but generally acknowledged as the preeminent Jewish thinker of the Middle Ages. He was born in Córdoba Spain but fled as a child from the Almohad persecution. He eventually settled in Egypt where he served as a rabbi physician and philosopher. His fourteen-volume Mishneh Torah his only work not in Arabic still carries canonical authority particularly within the Yemenite Jewish community as the codification of Talmudic law. His other work includes a commentary on the Mishnah entitled Kitab al-Siraj Kitab al-Fara'I a book on precepts and the philosophical work Dalalat al-Ha'irin known in Hebrew as the Moreh Nevukhim The Guide to the Perplexed. The major premise is an attempted philosophical/theological reconciliation of the Hebrew Bible and Greek knowledge. Judah Aryeh Leib Alter along with the "Tiferet Shlomo" commentary by R. Solomon Cohen of Radomsk. These were both leading Hasidic rebbes in 19th century Poland. The author asked his readers to respond with empathy to his protagonist's ordeal and thereby assumes a stance which not only mirrors a fundamental principle of psychological inquiry but which also helps the reader gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of human self destruction. On Salomon Gotthold Source; Jewish Encyclopedia:<br /> German rabbi; born Nov. 1 1784 at Sondersleben Anhalt; died Nov. 17 1862 in Hamburg. His first teacher in Bible and Talmud was his uncle R. Meister Heinemann. In 1800 he went to the school of R. Joseph Wolf at Dessau. In 1801 he became tutor in the Kalman family and in the following year was appointed teacher at the Jewish Free School subsequently called "Franzschule für Hebräische und Deutsche Sprache" where he had as colleagues David Fränkel and Moses Philippson. He delivered his first public discourse "Ueber die Entfaltung des Inneren Lebens Durch die Sprache" in 1806 on the occasion of a school examination. It was printed in the periodical "Sulamith" which Salomon was then editing and of which six volumes appeared. In 1815 he was invited to deliver a sermonat the Beer private synagogue at Berlin. It should be noted that he devoted much time to the study of the sermons of famous contemporary Christian preachers which influenced considerably his own homiletic methods. In 1818 he was called as preacher to the newly founded congregation at Hamburg as associate to Eduard Kley. In 1822 he visited Copenhagen where he preached with great success; but he declined a call to that city. In 1835 he engaged in polemics with the theologian Hartmann of Rostock who publicly opposed the emancipation of the Jews Salomon answering with his "Briefe an Hartmann." In 1837 he issued the "Deutsche Volks- und Schulbibel für Israeliten" with the assistance of Isaac Noah Mannheimer and with the financial support of the Hamburg philanthropist Solomon Heine uncle of Heinrich Heine. In 1841 the famous temple controversy "Tempelstreit" arose in Hamburg on the occasion of the publication of Salomon's prayer-book which was put under the ban by akam Isaac Bernays. To this period belongs his defense of the Jews against Bruno Bauer. Between 1843 and 1845 he took part in the rabbinical conferences at Leipsic Brunswick Frankfort-on-the-Main and Breslau. In 1843 he celebrated his twenty-fifth anniversary as preacher at Hamburg and soon after dedicated the new temple in the Poolstrasse. He resigned his office in 1858. Salomon who was one of the most eloquent Jewish preachers of the nineteenth century was often invited to deliver discourses in various cities e.g. in London Frankfort Vienna and Prague.
