L’Amour Badin ou les ruses de Cupidon dediès a la jeunesse.
<p>Sole edition of this entertaining almanac for 1789 aimed at young people but presumably not children with a delightful suite of humorous and mildly erotic plates by François-Marie-Isidore Quéverdo. Each month is given an engraving several verses and songs with music. Among the latter is found 'Air de la negresse' — a three-verse song with music from or perhaps just inspired by Radet's 1787 opéra-comique La Negresse. Though recorded by both Gay and Carteret we have not located any institutional copy in the usual online catalogues WorldCat KVK CCFr JISC. Carteret 866; Gay I 112.</p><p>32mo 96 × 55 mm pp. 6 61 1 6 including 12 engraved plates by Quéverdo plus integral printed wrapper with engraved title and 'Remarques pour la présente année 1789' at front and imprint and decorative panel border at rear. Engraved throughout including music. Some pages closely cut just affecting ruled borders or touching the musical staves in a very few instances. Gilt edges stitched as issued loose in contemporary/original gilt morocco chemise. Wrappers very slightly rubbed and dusty but an excellent survival.</p> [Jagot for] Boulanger.

Almanach de Muses ran from 1765 to 1833. This issue is one of three that contains poems on Ballooning all the rage in Europe at the time especially with the Montgolfier brothers' 1783 demonstrations of hot-air-balloon flying in Annonay France. This isssue includes a satiric poem advising Blanchard not to fly p. 43-48. Blanchard being Jean Pierre Blanchard who on January 7 1785 with Dr. John Jeffries an American physician made the first flight over the English Channel traveling from Dover England to Calais France. In/16 12 x 8 cm cartonnage recouvert de pièces de satin délicatement ornementé en couleurs sur les plats le dos ainsi que sur l'étui tranches dorées page de titre gravée bandeaux sur le calendrier inséré probablement remplacé de 1816 à 1821 164 pages. 6 planches 8 f. de partitions 6 f. avec de larges illustrations différentes pour chacun des mois de l'année. Rares rousseurs bel état des plats aux coloris encore frais et aux détails d'une grande finesse ; l'étui à quant à lui fait son office et son décor entral est moins visible. La page de titre porte l'an 1816 rectifiée en 1818 le calendrier intérieur quant à lui porte la date 1821 ! Biblio : Carteret "Les almanachs français" p. 394 en notice 1501 précise que les volumes en satin "se paient fort cher". unknown

Our copy is remarkably well preserved down to the delicate paper pull-off case. It comes from the splendid collection of publisher's bindings assembled over three decades by Ellen K. Morris and Edward S. Levin and exhibited at the Grolier Club in 2000. In a review of the sumptuous catalogue for the exhibition written for the Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America Andrea Krupp praises the "pristine condition" of this "glittering and opulent collection." . Mme de Staël après un long périple qui l'emmena de Vienne en Russie, puis Stockholm et Londres fit réédité de l'Allemagne en 1815 alors que Paris était en pleine occupation étrangère. CALENDRIER POUR CETTE ANNEE
Paris: Louis Janet ca. 1820s. Necessaire: 120 x 70 mm 4 3/4 x 2 3/4". Calendar: 6 leaves; notebook: 4 leaves. <br/> Red straight-grain morocco lined with green satin containing a calendar in paper wrappers and notebook bound in matching pale green satin. Exterior decorative panel with central painted porcelain scene surrounded by wire filigree and pearls under a glass window. In a later red morocco case by Riviere & Son stamp-signed double ruled in gilt raised bands gilt-ruled compartments. Each calendar page with an engraved vignette. The necessaire additionally containing a pair of scissors with a delicately carved mother-of-pearl handle a silver mechanical pencil a small wooden pencil and an awl a tipped-in early 20th century auction listing not mentioning the latter two suggesting they are possible later additions. The notebook with the engraved bookplate of Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons dated 1908 to the front pastedown. Calendar leaves loose with fore-edges slightly creased other trivial defects but the leaves and binding fresh and quite clean. Nécessaire lightly worn from use with very short split to one tab closure; decorative panel with faint horizontal hairline crack visible only under magnification scattered losses to the paint on the porcelain panel but the fragile object surprisingly well preserved with all its components present.<br/> <br/> This charming calendar in a period nécessaire a small case for toiletries or as here personal implements provides a window into the life of a young woman during France’s Bourbon Restoration; wonderfully preserved in a custom Riviere box it was later in an important British collection. Small calendars and almanacs were popular New Years gifts for young French women starting in the late 18th century and by the second decade of the 19th century--when this calendar was likely produced--a thriving industry had grown up around their production. Louis Janet 1788-1840 who was in business as a bookseller and binder from 1810 through 1838 made much of his business in these small almanacs and keepsake books. In our charming almanac each month has an attractive engraving of a Neoclassical scene with graceful women in flowing drapery often accompanied by flitting putti. The nécessaire is similarly decorated: the central panel depicts a young female in a flowing gown leaning over a plinth inscribed with the text: "l’amilie me suffit" "friendship is enough for me". These attractive illustrations together with the contents of the nécessaire suggest its owner was a fashionable young woman. This delightful object is from the collection of David Lionel Salomons 1851-1925 whose books were chosen with notable discrimination the goal always being to obtain copies in very fine condition. The collection was particularly strong in 18th and 19th century illustrated books and attractive bindings. It is very likely given the dates of his collection that he was the owner who commissioned the pleasing Riviere & Son box in which the nécessaire currently resides. Louis Janet unknown

Goldener OPappband mit aufkaschierten kol. Kupfertafeln auf den Deckeln u. kol. Bordüren a. Rücken. Im OSchmuckschuber mit aufkaschierten kol. Kupfertafeln, dieser leicht berieben. Buchblock stellenweise leicht gelockert. Innen a. d. Rändern leicht angegilbt. Sehr dekoratives Objekt. Der genaue Erscheinungsverlauf des vorliegenden Almanachs war für uns bibliographisch nicht eindeutig nachweisbar (1812 ?-1831?).
