[ALMANAC - FRENCH]. TESTU, Laurent Etienne (publisher).
Almanach impérial pour l’an XIII = 1804-1805 présente a sa Majesté l’Empereur par Testu.
Paris 1804. Large 8vo ca. 19.5 x 12 cm. L.É. Testu Contemporary gold-tooled tree marbled calf with an ornamental border on both boards a richly gold-tooled spine with red calf title-label lettered in gold gilt board edges gilt edges marbled endpapers. With the engraved coat-of-arms of the First French Empire on the title-page and numerous letterpress tables. 16 832 pp. Attractively bound copy of this interesting French almanac for the year 1804-1805 ‘An XIII’ i.e. year 13 counted from 1792 the period running from 23 September 1804 to 22 September 1805 according to the French Republican calendar which was used from 1793 to 1805. It is the last almanac using the terminology of the French Revolution before Napoleon Bonaparte 1769-1821 was crowned Emperor of the French on 2 December 1804.This almanac contains a wealth of information concerning the organization of the administration of the French state in the first year of the First French Empire. It comprises the names of the main dignitaries in France and abroad mentioning i.a. Thomas Jefferson as President of the United States of America the public officials in Paris and in the provinces the magistracy the clergy the army officers etc. as well as the usual subjects present in most almanacs i.a. annual fairs stagecoaches and timetables. It is concluded with an extensive index pp. 817-824 and a supplement pp. 825-832 which is not always present in most copies we could trace. The French publisher Laurent Étienne Testu 1765-1839 worked from 1788 for the French printer François Jean Noël Debure 1743-1802 who was the son-in-law of the French printer Laurent Charles d’Houry 1723-1786. The family of D’Houry had started with the annual publication of the famous Almanach royal which appeared under this title from 1700 to 1792.In 1791 Testu took over Debure’s printing house and in 1792 the title of the almanac was turned into Almanach national de France due to the new political situation caused by the French Revolution. After Napoleon’s coronation to emperor in 1804 its title was subsequently changed into Almanach imperial. Testu was appointed imperial publisher to Napoleon until his abdication in 1814.With the 19th-century oval bookplate of the French military Albert Le Lorier "Sous-Intendant Militaire" mounted on the front paste-down. The head of spine is slightly chipped/damaged the corners of the boards are slightly worn. The title-page is slightly stained in the outer blank margin two text leaves Oo2 and Zz5 are re-attached probably replaced and their outer blank margins are slightly shortened otherwise a beautiful binding in very good condition.l Grand-Carteret Les almanachs français no. 1433. hardcover

Exceptionally rare 1797 edition of a miniature almanac in the original mother-of-pearl chemise. The almanac was published by Jan van Gulik in Amsterdam from at least 1781 to 1797 but is very rare with only one or two copies known for each year. It includes eclipses for the year 1797 a calendar five short stories and two poems and is illustrated by five double-page engravings depicting amorous scenes. The title-page and final page have been engraved on the same double-leaf which has been wrapped around the rest of the work. [Almanac, 1823. Switzerland]
1823 SWISS ALMANAC WITH WOODCUTS. Nutzlicher Haus-Kalender oder der Richtige Bot aus das Jahr Christi 1824
Argau Switzerland: Jakob Diebold 1823. Very Good. 4to. 48 pp. Pictorial wrappers stitched as issued. Tables printed in black & red lower page corners folded some moderate edge wear foxing and mild waterstaining. Well worn but generally very good with a few small tears along edges. An extremely scarce 1824 provincial Swiss Almanac well illustrated with curious woodcuts including an elaborate title-page border in the neo-classical style back cover depiction of the slaughter of the Greek patriarch a double-page fold-out plate of a castle in Baden small dirt stain at top and twelve emblematic woodcuts depicting astrological attributes of each month. Owing to the fact that only one other copy seems to have survived it is not surprising that we have been unable to locate reproductions of any of these woodcuts published elsewhere. The title-page woodcut appears to have been signed in the border the artist / engraved "Z. Morman." Several of the woodcut zodiac symbols are signed "Z."<br /> <br /> Jakob Diebold a bookbinder took over the publication of this Haus-Kalender a.k.a. the Swiss "Baden Kalendar" from Heinrich Joseph Keiser sometime after 1808 during which time he ran both the bindery and the Baldinger printing press. Sales of the almanac under Diebold greatly improved largely due to the improving economic and intellectual conditions of Baden. This calendar contains a "Directory of school books children's writings and writing materials which are available from B.J. Diebold book printers and bookbinders in Baden." The almanac includes a report on the New Year i.e. 1824 a directory and covers a range of topics including chronology astronomy astrology and herbal medicine.<br /> <br /> The ZB Zurich has scattered holdings of Diebold's publication namely: 1811-1812; 1819-1821; 1824 the present year 1825-1826; 1831; 1837; 1846. The Landesmuseum has three unrelated issues 1817-1819. Jakob Diebold unknown

[Almanac.] More, Roger [pseudonym.]
Almanac. More Roger pseudonym. Poor Roger 1758. The American Country Almanack for the year of Christian Account 1758. . Calculated according to art and fitted to the province of New-York . By Roger More philodespot.
<b><i>Scarce 1758 Almanac with Great F&I War Content</i></b><p>This almanac provides vivid insight into the impact of the French & Indian War on the American colonies. A fiery poetic narrative is carried through at the head of each monthly calendar page. For instance August's verse:</p><p>"This Month alas! Proclaims a double Woe</p><p>Both 'Swego and Lake George our Losses know;<br /></p><p>Fort William-Henry felt the fatal stroke</p><p>From faithless Villains. Who their promise broke</p><p>False to their Words our Men became their Prey;</p><p>And do we yet a just Revenge delay."</p><p>Following the calendar pages is a four-page "Continuation of the Historical Account of Affairs in North America…" which provides a summary of military actions from the loss of the fort at Oswego in August 1756 through "the last Day of August 1757 since which we can add no further Intelligence."</p><p>Also of significance is a full page devoted to "A short discourse on Comets with some account of that which is expected to appear in the present year 1758." It references Dr. Halley's work and includes this nod to the progress of the science of astronomy: "If therefore this comet return according to this period in 1758 and there is the greatest reason to think it will astronomy will then have something new to boast of." Halley's comet as it is now known did indeed appear on Christmas night 1758.</p><p>A rare almanac. RareBookHub notes only one listing: an auction in 1924 for which no price was given. ESTC identifies 3 institutional holders: AAS 2 copies NY Historical Society and the Huntington Library.</p><p><b>References:</b> ESTC: W36489. Evans: 7960. Drake <i>Almanacs</i>: 5712.</p><p><b>Condition:</b> String tied. Some mild staining and a bit of edge roughness. One closeable tear at the gutter of the first leaf. A strong impression throughout. Overall a very well-preserved example.</p>ICN 7659. Printed and sold by J. Parker and W. Weyman, at the new-printing-office in Beaver-Street
