‎Berne, Kartographische Anstalt Lips, 1901. En 21 sections montées sur toile gris-bleu et pliées, formant une carte de 468 x 668 mm ; étiquette au dos portant le titre manuscrit.‎

‎Rare carte figurant le réseau télégraphique dans le monde, dessinée et gravée en couleurs par C. van Hoven, à Berne, et publiée par la maison d'édition Kartographische Anstalt Lips, à Berne. Second tirage publié en 1901. Les lignes terrestres sont indiquées par des lignes continues en rouge, les lignes sous-marines en noir. Les lignes sous-marines en projet sont indiquées par des traits discontinus en rouge. Elles concernent les liaisons vers le Pacifique, depuis la Chine et les États-Unis. Le premier câble télégraphique transpacifique, reliant les États-Unis à Hawaï et aux Philippines, sera mis en place en 1903. La même année, la liaison sera effectuée entre le Canada, l'Australie, la Nouvelle-Zélande et Fidji. En carton figurent des petites cartes de Terre-Neuve et de la Nouvelle-Écosse, du canal de la Manche, de la Chine avec la Corée, des Antilles avec Cuba et Haïti, des îles grecques, du détroit de Gibraltar, du détroit de Perim au sud de la Mer Rouge (actuel détroit de Bab al-Mandab), du territoire du Togo (alors sous protectorat allemand), et de l'Afrique orientale allemande, colonie qui s'étendait sur les territoires actuels du Burundi, du Rwanda et de la partie continentale de la Tanzanie. L'introduction de la télégraphie électrique en Europe remonte à l'année 1849. Jusqu'en 1863, l'échange des correspondances télégraphiques entre les différents états européens est régi par deux conventions internationales, celle de Berne en 1852 et celle de Bruxelles en 1858. En 1868, lors de la Conférence télégraphique internationale de Vienne, le Bureau International des Administrations Télégraphiques est créé, placé sous le contrôle du gouvernement suisse. Il a pour mission de réunir, coordonner et publier les renseignements de toute nature relatifs à la télégraphie internationale, et de procéder à toutes les études et exécuter tous les travaux dans l'intérêt de la télégraphie internationale. À la fin du XIXe siècle, le monde est connecté grâce à un réseau de câbles sous-marins permettant de faire circuler, en quelques heures, les informations d’un endroit à l’autre de la planète. En 1901, date de l'édition de cette carte, le Bureau International des Administrations Télégraphiques compte près d'une quarantaine de pays adhérents et un nombre similaire de compagnies télégraphiques privées. Il fut renommé Bureau international de l'Union Télégraphique lors de la Conférence de Lisbonne en 1908. Bel exemplaire. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Dr. C. Nagaraja Rao received his M.A. degree (1980) and Ph.D. (2010) from S.V.University, Tirupathi. Rao served as Deputy Field Officer (Tech) in the Directorate General of Security, Government of India (1976-78). He joined the Government of Andhra Pradesh as Municipal Commissioner in 1979 and served in various capacities till his retirement as Additional Director.
