Works Progress Administration Federal Theatre Project
FEDERAL THEATRE
New York 1937. Volume one numbers 4 & 5; volume 2 numbers 1-4. Six issues. Quarto. Stapled stiff wrappers. Photographs and illustrations a few in color. Wrappers occasionally dust-tanned or smudged library blind-stamp in lower fore- corner of first wrapper; chiefly very good. Edited by Pierre de Rohan. Originally subtitled the "Monthly News Bulletin Issued for All Workers on Federal Theatre Projects Throughout America by the Bureau of Research and Publication" then finally abbreviated to the "Bulletin of the Federal Theatre Project." An essential record of the Theatre Project under the direction of Hallie Flanagan. Its aspiration to appear monthly was short-lived and a final third volume appeared evidently terminating in May 1938. The last three issues here indicate efforts to achieve distribution to the public through newsstands and bookshops rather than just to individuals associated with the Project. Those issues were distributed according to a note in pictorial covers rather than in the typographic wrappers evidenced here. Don Freeman contributed several frontispieces including color and there are color plates of marionettes and costume designs. The text ranges from summary reports and projections by Flanagan and others to accounts of specific productions and theatre groups in the North East as well as elsewhere. Uncommon essential. unknown books

THE MIGRATORY-CASUAL WORKER EFFECTS OF THE WORKS PROGRAM ON RURAL RELIEF: A Survey of Rural Relief Cases Closed in Seven States July Through November 1935 and MIGRANT FAMILIES;
Washington D.C.: United States Government Printing Office 1937. First Edition. Wraps. Good. By examining the experience of the transient program this report has been able to isolate a number of widely-held misconceptions about transients and transient relief. Analysis of the reasons why migrant families left home and of their subsequent travels reveals that they were not - as is so commonly believed - irresponsible and degraded groups addicted to chronic wandering. On the contrary a large majority of them were habitually settled and self-supporting families dislodged by the depression and seeking reestablishment elsewhere. The families left home not only because they were in distress but also because of a reasonable expectation of an improved status at their destination." WPA Research Monograph VII XIII and XVIII. Tall octavo three volumes. Original printed gray paper wrappers. Some general wear and soiling with a previous owner's ink signature on the front panel of each volume. United States Government Printing Office unknown books
