This is the report of an engineering study on the vulnerability of the nation's electric power systems to attack by nuclear weapons. It was authorized by the Dept. of Defense Office of Civil Defense and the Dept. of the Interior Defense Electric Power Administration. The Office of Civil Defense realizing the necessity of having essential ventilation and illumination in community shelters sought a valid estimate of the electric power service that would be available under conditions following a nuclear attack. The results of this study were intended to provide the requisite estimate. It also contains useful information on the ability of the electric power industry to furnish power for decontamination and recovery during the survival period following the first 15 days of shelter confinement. The Defense Electric Power Administration was selected to perform this study because of its recent experience in conducting related studies. Representatives from more than 1500 operating companies contributed more than 50000 person hours to obtain and analyze much of the technical information and supporting data for the material contained in this report. This study was the most complete analysis made to date 1964 of the effects of an assumed full-scale nuclear attack on the nation's electric power industry. These effects were examined in detail to find out what they mean to the entire electric power industry in terms of physical damage to the generating plants transmission lines and related facilities. The report contains: Summary and Conclusions Study Problem Study Method Generating Capacities Preattack and Surviving Populations by States and Regions Time-Phased Load Capacity and Balance; Regional Summaries by States Time-Phased and Load Capacity and Balance:: Composite and National Summary of All Regions Time-Phased. This report illustrates the restrictive influence of the attack on such factors as power service capability interrelationship between electric power systems and restorational time. It takes into consideration a high-level national attack with nuclear weapons and evaluates its effects on generation facilities substation transformers transmission facilities and interconnections. This overall insight into conditions that will have to be met should be useful to the electric power industry when considering plans and programs to reduce vulnerability to attack and to provide service when and where needed postattack. The results of this study are of special significance to national security because they bear directly on the feasibility of a sound national fallout shelter program. In another sense the value of this study goes beyond the data contained in the report. As the first nationwide effort of its kind it established standards methods and format which can be used to guide future combined industry/government surveys to update or expand information on the vulnerability of electric power systems. The usefulness and validity of the study were increased by directing inquiry to the smallest practical reporting unit--the county. <p>8vo. 215 x 160 mm. 8 ½ x 6 ¼ inches. 306 leaves chapters separated by blanks. 19th century leather backed marbled paper boards; inner hinge cracked edges bumped some abrasion to the head of the spine; sound.</p><p>Beautifully written manuscript volume containing an extensive discussion of library management and practices written by an anonymous Spanish author in the middle of the 19th century. </p><p>This dissertation organized in 70 chapters begins with a discussion of the library profession and its importance to civil society. His first chapters describe the "Archive" with reference to Spanish monastic governmental and diplomatic collections that have been preserved. He focuses his attention on Aragon Mallorca Navarra and Santiago. He turns to France to furnish some interested information on the archives in Paris before getting into the chapters on classification of materials and the creation of inventories.</p><p>After nearly 200 leaves of text on the subject of archives the authors turns his attention to libraries. From the beginning he takes a historical approach focusing his attention on both books and manuscripts mentioning the collections at Cambridge University. Paleography is a subject he spends some time describing and then he moves into the history of printing typography Gutenberg and the spread of printing to Spain. The final dozen chapters are devoted to the rules for managing a library lessons in classification and inventory control. He quotes from both DeBure and Brunet in his lessons on cataloguing.</p>A rather remarkable piece of work thought to be unpublished. An examination of both United States and Spanish national collections turned up no reference to this anonymous piece of library scholarship.

This volume was later reprinted by Greenwood Press. This was Historical Reports of War Administration War Production Board General Study No. 1. The War Production Board WPB was an agency of the United States government that supervised war production during World War II. President Franklin D. Roosevelt established it in January 1942 with Executive Order 9024. The WPB replaced the Supply Priorities and Allocations Board and the Office of Production Management. The WPB directed conversion of companies engaged in activities relevant to war from peacetime work to war needs allocated scarce materials established priorities in the distribution of materials and services and prohibited nonessential production. It rationed such commodities as gasoline heating oil metals rubber paper and plastics. It was dissolved shortly after the defeat of Japan in 1945 and was replaced by the Civilian Production Administration in late 1945. In 1942-1945 WPB supervised the production of $183 billion equivalent to $2.12 trillion in 2020 worth of weapons and supplies about 40 percent of the world output of munitions. The UK the USSR and other allies produced an additional 30 percent while the Axis produced only 30 percent. One fourth of the US output was warplanes; one fourth was warships. Meanwhile the civilian standard of living was about level. The WPB and the nation's factories effected a great turnaround. Military aircraft production which totaled 6000 in 1940 jumped to 85000 in 1943. Factories that made silk ribbons now produced parachutes automobile factories built tanks typewriter companies converted to rifles undergarment manufacturers sewed mosquito netting and a rollercoaster manufacturer converted to the production of bomber repair platforms. The WPB ensured that each factory received the materials it needed to produce the most war goods in the shortest time. Executive Order 9638 created the Civilian Production Administration and terminated the War Production Board on October 4 1945. The Civilian Production Board was consolidated with other agencies to form the Office of Temporary Controls—an agency in the Office for Emergency Management of the executive office of the president. The latter had previously been established pursuant to the Reorganization Act of 1939. The executive order provided a Temporary Controls Administrator appointed by the president to head the Office of Temporary Controls and vested in him among other things the functions of the Price Administrator.
