Collection of Letters and Documents Sent to South Carolina Law Firm Spain & Richardson Concerning Debt Collection Estate Administration and the Sale and Legal Defense of Enslaved People
South Carolina and others 1860. Approximately 125pp with each item usually about 1 page. Some with slight water damage though legible; generally very good to excellent. A collection of mainly letters with some documents sent to the law firm Spain & Richardson of South Carolina—Albertus Chambers Spain 1821–1881 who in 1860 would sign the state’s Ordinance of Secession and James Sanders Guignard Richardson 1815–1879. Most of the documents concern estate administration and debt collection: a letter from Charleston presses the firm to “force the debtor to pay†August 20 1855; one from New York complains of “a rascal . trying to swindle meâ€; and a different Charleston writer complains that a boarder and his father had stiffed him on multiple bills:<br /> <br /> “I have not seen or heard from old McLeod since although I have written over one doz letters to him he has acted in a villanous manner to me a common hod carrier would not act in the manner he has Done although claiming to be a Class Leader in the Methodist Church . ‘Excuse’ his mother was sick &c&c which I have since learned was all a fabrication . I did not think there was any such tricky folks in Sumter or Clarendon &c . You will please write me as soon as you receive this & Read it & give me your advice in the matter & what is best to Do if Mr McLeod has his property in his own name if it is in his wifes but I Do not think so I could hold them as all the goods he Bought was for the wife & children & negro’s.†1860<br /> <br /> Also included are a document and a letter concerning the sale of enslaved people by the Kelley family of Sumter County. They were enslaved by the estate of Simon Kelley 1787–1852 which was being handled by his daughter Sarah 1812–d. Sarah Kelley’s brother-in-law Castus Belk writes:<br /> <br /> “I received your letter requiring me & the other parties concerned to arrange the matter with the old lady on the terms I have assertained by Sarah Kelley’s husband Mr Drury Boykin that the old lady will come to no agreement as yet But I have sent her a return showing to give her concent to the sale of the negros and for her to assigne which if she dose will be presented to you by Mr B Kelley if she dose assigne it and it answers to the perpose intended I shall be glad to hear from you for the old lady intendes to make no defence at all. NB beware of the man R.K. but pick all out of him you can getâ€. September 1856<br /> <br /> R.K. is Reddick Kelley 1815–1886 another Kelley child who witnessed the following assent to sale included in the collection:<br /> <br /> “State of South Carolina Sep 8th / 56<br /> Sumter District<br /> I the said Sarah Kelley of the said state and district do hereby assign and give my consent to the sale of the said negros belonging to the Estate of Simon Kelley Dec of the said state and district here unto my mark<br /> Reddick Kelley X Sarah Kelley / her markâ€<br /> <br /> Finally there is an intriguing letter from fellow lawyer James Hart Norwood concerning the trial of an enslaved man for an unknown crime:<br /> <br /> “I attended the trial of Kelly’s negro on Thursday and we achieved a clean victory verdict ‘not guilty.’ Beasley says I made the best speech he ever heard from me. I spoke 55 minutes Marley followed spoke 45. The trial was at Brown’s house he gave his testimony in bed. Mrs B- gave us thunder during her examination our argument but Marley will give you a graphic description of it when he sees you.†June 14 1858<br /> <br /> We did not find a record of this trial in newspapers from the time.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of enslavement in the law and legal history in antebellum South Carolina. unknown

Abgefaßt in Form abwechselnder Monologe des Königs von Frankreich (Louis XIV.), des Herzogs von Anjou (als Philipp V. Ein anderer von dem Hächelmacher Antonio, durch jüngst angekommenen Currier mitgebrachter wohl curioser Brieff, in welchem neben vil anderen lächerlichen Erzehlungen auch die in seiner Geburths-Stadt zu Cremona jüngst beschehene Action mit dem gefangenen General Villeroy begriffen. The fourth part concerns the treatment of the report in the provinces and the fifth the "states of war", with detailed proposals for improvements to the always difficult distribution of financial burdens among the provinces in the Republic. - Bindings slightly worn, the spines in particular. Glasmalerei. Durchmesser ca. 205 mm. Die mit Schwarzlot und Silbergelb gemalte Renaissance-Bleiglasscheibe, wohl eine sogenannte Kabinettscheibe für einen profanen Raum, zeigt das Wappen der Murauer Liechtensteiner (in schwarz zwei silberne Schräglinksbalken). Die Umschrift "Her Ott von Liechtenstain" ist vermutlich auf Otto von Liechtenstein-Murau (1520-64) zu beziehen. Die bedeutende, im 17. Jahrhundert ausgestorbene steirische Adelsfamilie war nicht mit dem fürstlichen Haus Liechtenstein verwandt; Ottos bekanntester Vorfahr ist der Minnesänger Ulrich von Liechtenstein (1200-75). Eine Variante des Wappens der Murauer Liechtensteiner ist im Wappen der Stadt Murau erhalten. - Die zentrale Scheibe mit der Wappendarstellung ist gebrochen und wurde mit einem Sprungblei gesichert und an einer Stelle geklebt. Eine der vier umgebenden Scheiben wurde ebenfalls mit einem Sprungblei repariert. Drei dieser Scheiben sind etwas locker in den Bleiruten.

With the title page printed in red and black 78 mostly double-page or folding engraved plates with caricatures on the 1720 Bubble and a double-page hand-coloured plate of the foundations of a house near Leiden loosely inserted in the back. 1 1 blank 25 1 52 "31" = 29 1 blank 8 9 1 blank pp. and engraved ll. A famous collection of texts and plates satirising the Englishman John Law his Mississippi Company and the international land and trading speculation in worthless shares of the South Sea Bubble of 1719-1720 which resulted in an international scandal. The speculation began in Paris London and Hamburg spreading to the Netherlands in the summer of 1720. While plays satirizing the speculation already opened in September 1720 the bubble really burst in October. Pieter Langendijk and Gysbert Tysens have been identified as authors of some of the plays. The book also provides the texts of official documents relating to the Dutch trading companies involved.In The great mirror of Folly Cole presents lists of plates which can be found in various copies the total of which however is never found in a single copy. The present copy contains no. 22 with a German title and no. 65 the famous playing cards in the later "Pasquin" version. Rare prints that are seldom present are no. 73 the magic cards and supplement nos. 2 3 4 and 6. The interest and importance of the collection is hardly to be exaggerated. It presents a unique source on one of the most interesting periods in economic history commenting on the feverish activity of speculation accompanying the introduction of the stock market not only in the Netherlands itself but also in France and England including the activities of John Law the Mississippi Bubble in France and the South Sea Bubble in England. The prints also include a map of the American State of Louisiana near the Mississippi River.With the bookplate of B. Eveleigh Winthrop mounted on the front pastedown. The binding is worn. These seem to be variants of the bindery's recorded stamps but several stamps also do bear similarities to other major Amsterdam binderies of the early 18th century like the so-called "Double Drawer Handle Bindery".With plate "Lauw-maands herdenking . The hinges are weakened the head of the spine is slightly damaged the corners and edges of the boards show slight signs of wear with a 3.5 x 1 cm repair to the leather on the back board not affecting the gold-tooling. The first flyleaf is partially loose a large tear in plates 7 and 12 resp. nos. 6 and 11 Muller repaired on the verso some plates with small tears along the folding lines slightly affecting the illustration of plate 51 same no. Muller and the map of Enkhuisen is torn along the paper stub it is mounted on not affecting the plate. Some occasional browning foxing and staining.
