A collection of humorous and satirical short stories with West Country, Irish and legal settings (the 'Three Courses') together with a more miscellaneous selection (the 'Dessert'). The book makes wonderfully entertaining reading, and the illustrations are frequently quite delightful. Though the author is un-named, he was readily identifiable in early 19th century England. William Clarke (1800-1838), was also the author of `The Boys' Own Book' and other various works of light literature, which obtained a considerable measure of popularity. He also brought out a humorous periodical, called `The Cigar' and he was for some time editor of the `Monthly Magazine' For the last three or four years of his life he devoted himself to an elaborate work on natural history. This does not appear to have been published, nor are any of his other writings extant. While working in his garden, near his house near Hampstead, he died of an apoplectic fit. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Internally clean and fine. <br/><br/><em>First printing of this milestone paper in thermodynamics which together with his paper from 1850 established the second law of thermodynamics. In the offered paper Clausius introduces the symbol T for the universal function of temperature a 1 and he introduces the concept of "entropy" the greek word for 'transformation' but without using the word Clausius introduced the word later in 1865 he calls this new theorem "the principle of the equivalence of transformations". In the Prerogative Court of Canterbury. Sentence Pronounced by the Judge, The Rt. Hon. Sir Herbert Jenner, Kt. on the 19th May 1836, in a cause of John Barnes (the producent of an alleged will of the Rev. John Clavell, late of Smedmore House, in the Isle of Purbeck, deceased) against Louisa Mansel, the wife of Colonel John Mansel, C.B. (to whom, as one of the nieces of Mr. Clavell, letters of administration of his estate and effects, as upon an intestacy had been granted by the same court), declaring the alleged will not to be the will of Mr. Clavell, and decreeing the letters of administration to Mrs. Mansel, and condemning John Barnes the party in the costs incurred.
